Judy and I plan to be there for sure. We may have an Australian song or two to sing.

And I'll bring along some copies of my new unreleased CD, OLD SAILOR-POETS, just in case anyone wants to hear the songs sung well.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Happy co-opted solistice,

Just realized...is this the first time we've had visiting singers from out-of-region/out-of-country for three consecutive months?

Black Sheep and Stallion in Oct.
Micca in Nov.
?? for Dec.

Tom's shanty project shows an ever-greater reach.

Peter-

I think it's Al and Barb Cuenin from the South Street Sea Port crew who are coming again. They've also recently revisited Australia and we'll be sharing some gossip with them.

Hope you can come.

A message from Al Cuenin allowed, "I just wanted to confirm that Barbara and I are coming to the   Saturday sing and Alison Kelley from the Johnson Girls and Frank       Woerner of the original X-Seamen are coming with us. I hope Linn will         be alright and we look forward to seeing you ............. Al Cuenin"

Although I seriously doubt that Linn will be able to make it, I'll be there for an hour or so.

NB - The nasty weather is currently scheduled for late Saturday and Sunday - Tom

Does this mean I can't do 'Fire Down Below'? Haha - if Alison's there, I'll request it!

Saturday is predicted to be sunny, but cold, cold, COLD! We also missed the Dorypeople last month, so I hope they'll make it. Hopefully the Goucester/Cape Ann crew will make the trek northward.

Well, I suppose I was being rude to mention another, but non-competing gig, on Dave's Garnet Roger's thread.

The weather still looks very good to us for travel in and out for this Saturday's Press Room event. It will be great to see more of the South Street Seaport gang along with Al and Barb. Maybe they'll be snowed in for the rest of the winter with the rest of us. Anyone willing to offer overnight hospitality for these brave tars?

What a treat to have the NYC contingent showing up, it looks to be about 1/3 of the New York Packet/Rats.

Tom, not to worry about our behavior today. I'll keep a weather eye out on those scurvy scum sucking singing sons of sea sluts.

PARTY, RIOT IN THE RIGGING, TEAR UP THE TIMBERS, there's gonna be a party tonight, we're gonna have a rumble tonight, so get out the razors, fit up your knuckles, bring in the bats, we're gonna riot & rumble tonight.

Don't worry Tom, I'll keep them in line,,,,,even if I have to take out the whips & chains.

Tom and Linn-

You were sorely missed but we managed to stumble along the best we could!

It was really a fine turnout, with Al, Barbara, Ali and Frank from NYC, the Adventure crew, Mark, Barry, Peter, Lynn, Tami, TruBrit, Jeri, Bruce & Steve, Dave, Jeff, Emory, Judy and me, probably 30 singers in all.

Barry started the winter fashion show & tell with his Rocky the Flying Squirrel cap, which was passed or hurled around so everyone could admire it.

The kitchen was well-behaved.

We recordedmost of the session and Judy was taking careful notes of what was sung but we're a little friend right now in terms of making a more coherent post.

It was a fine singing session, and I managed to get rid of a dozen pre-release copies of my new CD, OLD SAILOR-POETS.

If we have electricity tomorrow, I'll be sure to post more.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I don't know that the kitchen people were that well behaved. They just didn't have a hope in hell of being heard without a chain saw or a cannon!

To those who gave me stuff to deliver to Tom & Linn, it's been delivered. I'm completely zonked. Came home, headache, ate something so I could take a monster ibuprofen, and now I'm going to go be unconscious.

One amazing session!

"we managed to stumble along the best we could"

Hell, it was a riotous affair. It was a powerhouse session. All or at least most of 3 Sheets To The Wind was there, of which the Thompsom boys (father & son) were in sharp form along with other 3 Sheeter family members Rose & David with harmony wiz kid Colin doing what they've become well know for=Harmony Singing, the other 3 Shitter hubby & wife team Peter & Joanne adding their colorful side to the onslaught & being brought along from the rear by storm by Captain Gardner "Gardi", along with Tim & Martha. Early leavers, polywogs Steve, Dave & Bruce made some peeps but had to drift off for other gigs. Jeff blew in late to pick up any slack that had been left by the draft going out by Mark & Emery, who had both sung a few gems. Peter was in the corner but he was well heard from none the less there were others too but I can't remember everyone & some I didn't know, oh Jeri, she looked great in my furry flop eared mule hat but she sounded much better than she looked (next time Jeri, keep your head out of my fur???). But the froth & the foam on the crest of the wave was the presence of the "Nue Yockers" Al (of the NY Packet) & Barbara & other Packers Frank also an Ex-Seamans Institute alumni & Alison Kelly-Kraan present Johnson Girl & NexTradition member were all welcomed with loving arms & they sure did a number on the rest of us, the Main-e-acks (Tami & Trubrit) were looking to take them home into the cold north coast but alas no CD's but they now got an earful of memories & will probably hit South Street Seaport for their next musical outing.
The foor was being torn up & the rafters were being pulled down but we did, barely, behave ourselves & have a great time & a wonderful sing in the process.

Barry

Barry-

You did great in your report but you always were more of a night owl than me.

Here's the incredible list of songs and who led them yesterday, as well as Judy and I could determine it:

Bound Away (Bill Adams), led by Charlie, same tune and chorus as tradition "Liverpool Packet" but unique verses

Old Jeb (Larry Kaplan), led by Emory, Kaplan's tribute to Capt. Jeb Tilton and his favorite cargo school the Alice Wentworth

Xmas Fish Song, led by Lynne C., about 7 sorts of fishes for supper

Bold Rily-O, led by Al C. from the South Street crew

Sailor Likes His Bottle-O, led by George from Gloucester

Pay Me My Money Down, led by Gardi from Gloucester

Ten Stone, led by Jeri

We'll Rant an' We'll Roar, led by Frank W. from the South Street crew

Fire Down Below, led by Alison Kelly-Kraan

Get Up, Jack, John Sit Down, led by Dave H.

A Long Time Ago, led by Barbara C. of the South Street crew

My Soldier Boy(?), led by George

Venzuela, led by Barry, tramp tanker song

Sea Traders (Burt Franklin Jenness), led by Charlie, another cargo ship tramping song introduced for the first time (search for "Sea Traders" thread for more details)

Plains of Mexico, led by one of Gloucester crew (who is that other big feller?)

London Julie, led by Peter S of Gloucester, and then continued by Barry, certainly one of the more dramatic highlights of the evening!

Time Ashore is Over, (traditional?), led by Rose and her family

Clear Away the Morning, (Gordon Bok), led by Mark

Boatman, led by Tim of the Gloucester crew

Don't You Remember Cape Ann, (Gordon Bok), led by Gardi

Roll, Alabama, led by Bruce, with a couple of "extra" verses by Barry

Hieland Laddie, led by Frank W.

Whiskey-O, led by Al with some extra "health improvement" verses

Leaving of Liverpool, led by Emory

The South Street crew were last seem making their way towards an Indian Resaturant, following my directions through the maze of streets in Portsmouth. They planned to spend the night nearby and then drive down to Boston for the Cambridge MIT Shanty Sing. Given the snow and sleet today, Lord knows where they are now.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Thanks for the appreciation, the additional information, and for being who you are!

Is it my imagination or are you really singing louder? Is that possible?

I don't think my hearing is getting any more acute.

Brightest and Best is actually Star In the East.

Time Ashore was written by Bill Meek.

The Wassail Song was not the Malpas Wassail; it was the Apple Tree Wassail.

The rendition of Brightest and Best (or Star in the East) is a tune completely unknown to me although I have known the song for years..........

The version of Star in the East was a shape-note hymn from Southern Harmony, Trubrit.

I'm sorry - my musical knowledge is minus 10 -- I am not sure what a shape note hymn is -- I will have to do some research......

Many thanks to all for carrying on in a proper seamanlike fashion. and for providing us absentees with a glowing portrait of what we missed, most especially, you good folk.

While waxing nautical, I should mentin that some kind soul has sent some pics of the 2006 visit of the "Eagle" to Pene Azul, who has added them   here.

Oops - sorry about getting the two song titles wrong. I think I called the song 'Brightest and Best' because that's what it is in one version. Thread: Lyr Add: Star in the East (Southern Harmony)

Tom-

That first shot of Barry Finn is really great. Who was the photographer?

There are some really nice close-ups of the group, John Roberts, and the slag heap.

Wow. It's been quite a while since I took those photos, but I remember the slag heap. I also remember somebody's butt crack (hehehe), but I didn't send that one in. I'm responsible for the captions as well. I thought the picture looked like Joanne. Kudos for getting it fixed so fast!

I should have brought my camera last night. I had my phone, but I don't know how to get the flash to work. ;-)

Great session, I'm just sorry that I couldn't have stayed longer to hear/sing/socialize more.

Guess I'll have to go next month as well. ;-)

Just for documentation (since there are a few songs titled "The Mermaid") it was Child #289.

See you all soon, and wishing you all the best of the season.

Peter

I'm trying to trace the Ex-Seamans Institute - a recording by them was played on a local (NZ) radio station, who can't find where they downloaded it from. It was Tom Bowling, written by Mr Dibden, usually thought of as a classical piece. Can anyone help please?
