Subject: BS: Weather news From: RangerSteve Date: 16 Dec 07 - 03:47 PM This morning the news anchors on a Philadelphia station informed us the the Jersey Shore was getting pounded by the latest storm. They went to the reporter in Atlantic City who informed us that it wasn't raining, the wind was calm and the waves were not very big at all. Later on in the day I learned that there was a severe storm in Indianapolis, Illinois. Maybe it's something in the drinking water. |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: catspaw49 Date: 16 Dec 07 - 04:06 PM WEll there was no mistake with this friggin' storm coming across the Ohio Valley and the Great Lakes! We have had everything from pounding rain to sleet to heavy snow to 40 mph winds.........This one has something for everybody and if you're in the band we are, you're getting all of it in varying waves. Currently we're back to snow and strong winds............ Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: katlaughing Date: 16 Dec 07 - 04:11 PM When we lived in WY, my daughter in New England called to see how we were doing in the 12 inches of snow and blizzard the Weather Channel had reported we were experiencing. I laughed. Looking out our window, all I could see for hundreds of miles was dry, bare, brown dirt with humps of sagebrushes dotting it here and there. Not a flake of snow to be seen, nor had there been, nor any in the near future. |
Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: curmudgeon Date: 16 Dec 07 - 04:30 PM Here in NH, it's 18F with a wind chill feeel of 2. It's been snowing since sometime last ight, with occassional interludes of freezing rain. And the wind is most insidious, coming through the walls of this north facing room. Late January weather has no business arriving mid December. I spent most of yesterday bringing in firewood so as not to have to go out in this and dig beneath snow mounded tarps. Ans since there wasn't really all that much rom to stack it within, I've had to scimp on burning, resulting in a rather cold abode. The good news is that the heat goes upstairs so at least the bedroom and bathroom are warm. Loudly sing goddamn! |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: Rapparee Date: 16 Dec 07 - 10:40 PM Ah, Indianapolis is in Indiana, not in Illinois. Trust me on this. Metropolis is in Illinois. The Springfield, IL area is supposed to get 8 or so inches on top of the five they already have. My brother is very glad to be retired. |
Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: JohnInKansas Date: 17 Dec 07 - 04:52 AM From the sound of it, the Springfield MA area should getting about the same stuff that Springfield IL got about a day+ earlier.(?) We've had daytime highs ranging from 28F (-2C) to 55F (13C) and overnight lows from about 12F (-11C) to 45F (7C) within the past week and a half. High yesterday (Sunday) on my thermometer just outside the window was about 31F (-.6C). We got some icing for a couple of days, but nothing like what hit Oklahoma a week or so ago, and I didn't hear of any nearby power outages. We have a light coat of snow now, and traffic is a bit slow; but I haven't heard of any major disruptions nearby. We should hear some colorful language that may warm our hearts in a few days, since our favorite family trucker left Wichita for Toronto a few days ago, and likely will have enroute stop-n-drops at several places that are in the thick of the miseries. He's usually on the road for about a week at a time, so we should hear the reports in a few more days, if he isn't delayed by the weather more than he's usually delayed by the dispatchers. John |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: Bee Date: 17 Dec 07 - 08:36 AM I'd blame global climate change, except that the last ten years have been the anomaly, here. This weather in December used to be normal. We have a foot of slushy snow down, about to turn to solid ice as temps drop this afternoon. And the wind is blowing like nobody's business. |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: ranger1 Date: 17 Dec 07 - 09:40 AM Well, I spent two hours this AM shovelling out my neighbor and de-icing her car so that she could get to work. Our street is two-way, but they only plow in one direction, thoroughly packing her driveway. The snowbank was almost four feet high and at least five feet thick at the base and fozen solid. I'm ready to go back to bed now. |
Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: SINSULL Date: 17 Dec 07 - 09:57 AM I spent 45 minutes freeing my car and de-icing it. Then I got stuck halfway out in the street in the crap left by the city plow. I was ready to cry when two neighbors showed up and dug me out. An hour to get out of my driveway. This has been one hell of a December. And there is another storm coming in on Friday. SINS, frostier than usual. |

(The lines run through a Maple tree, and the limb fell from one side of the tree.) |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: Bee Date: 17 Dec 07 - 11:12 AM Oh lordy, there goes the plow up our road at last. Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Dec 07 - 11:24 AM Sunday was certainly blizzard conditions around this part of midcoast Maine. We had about 8 inches of snow, subzero temperatures, a driving wind, and then enough sleet to form the icing on the cake, so to speak. There are four apartments in my buildings, so it's always a bear coordinating getting everyone out in the morning. This morning wasn't too bad. Everyone warmed up their cars, scrapped the ice off essential surfaces, and waited for the snowplow. But, my usual snowplow man couldn't get his truck started this morning, something about ice in the fuel line. By the time he actually called back to explain, I'd called another friend to plow us out. So everyone did manage to get out on schedule but it was a little more stressful, when we didn't know what was happening. The sliding back doors of my van are still iced in and I don't dare try to open them; the handles of the Honda vans tend to break off when those doors are frozen, or they half open and then won't close. I figured they'd thaw out after the van had warmed up for a half hour but they're still looking frozen. Maybe I'll give them a try come spring. Walks are shoveled. Everything else seems fine. Cats are not happy. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: JohnInKansas Date: 04 Jan 08 - 10:22 PM A visit a few minutes ago to the MSNBC site for "Today's News" reported EXTREMELY NASTY WEATHER on the US west coast, with "a million people without power," mandatory evacuations due to mudslide threats, hurricane force winds, massive tree damage, roads closed and BARRICADED due to unsafe travel concerns. I went back to the main page to get a link and - - - It's GONE. (Maybe they're in California?) Anyone want to offer the real story on what's going on? John |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: JohnInKansas Date: 04 Jan 08 - 10:54 PM Well MSNBC is back, with no comment on why they disappeared. The news report showed a "weather pattern," either a satellite view or simulated artists concept, that looked like a typical hurricane circulation just encroaching on the coast. It appears to have moved into mountain passes (based on road closings named) and likely will spill over the peaks in a few hours if it moves in "normal" directions. It could - maybe - change the weather in Wyoming within a day or so? My local TV news, off the coathanger-on-the-tree antenna, hasn't interrupted normal broadcasting to report anything. According to MSNBC this storm is BIG NEWS, second only to Britney's hospitalization after the standoff with the cops over her kids' custody (which she lost again). It's obvioulsy VERY IMPORTANT but doesn't seem to be stirring up much except at that one site. John |
Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: Sorcha Date: 04 Jan 08 - 11:02 PM Well, John...we do know that if we don't like the weather wait five minutes. I'm HOPING that tomorrow will be nice enough to get some of the dog 'mess' cleaned up in the back yard. It's getting scary out there! The fact that the Bay Bridge is closed due to wind is pretty 'important' to the folks that use it. 90 MPH winds in Montana, I-90 closed. Mudcatter Alice lost a piece of her car to the wind and of course it's the weekend...nobody open to fix it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: Rapparee Date: 04 Jan 08 - 11:21 PM Gusts to 70 mph here right now, and higher only a few miles away. Temp is 45F, but we're supposed to get slushy snow overnight. Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: katlaughing Date: 05 Jan 08 - 12:59 AM Colorado is already over 100% of its annual snowfall, but they still aren't declaring the drought over. John, there was this in the NYTs online. Sounds very nasty: SAN FRANCISCO — A fierce Pacific storm howled into Northern California on Friday, bringing a treacherous mix of flooding, hurricane-force winds, and blizzard conditions for millions of residents. The storm, one of two predicted for the weekend, hit the Bay Area before dawn and knocked out power for more than a million people from Central California to the Oregon border. As of noon Friday, about 850,000 people were still without power, according to Pacific Gas and Electric, which was warning that many customers could be powerless through the weekend, as repair crews in some areas had to retreat in the face of flying debris and tree limbs Transit was also snarled and ugly. Several major Bay Area roads and freeways, including Highway 101 and Interstate 580, were closed by airborne construction materials and overturned vehicles, including four trucks that were flipped on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, a major east-west thoroughfare that runs over a north finger of the San Francisco Bay. A downed tree on the tracks stopped subway service in San Francisco's Mission District, sending evacuated passengers into the rain, while most ferry services across the bay were also canceled as docked boats rocked like rubber duckies in a bath. In San Francisco, collapsing scaffoldings took down power lines and broke windows and brought electrically powered buses to a screeching halt along at least one major boulevard, while those attempting to make it to work dodged flying trash cans, orphaned umbrellas and dislocated news-boxes. Dozens of flights were canceled at the San Francisco airport, where winds topped 65 miles per hour at midmorning, making for impressive and harrowing white caps lapping at the foot of the runways. Delays were two hours. The highest winds were in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about 150 miles to the east, where the National Weather Service was warning of white-out conditions and 100-mile-an-hour winds. Power was sporadic in the mountain towns along Interstate 80, which was briefly closed and where only the most hardy of trucks and chained cars were crawling along. All told, the weather service said some higher elevations could receive eight feet of snow by the time the second storm blows through at weekend's end. The National Weather Service advised that heavy rain carried with it the danger of mudslides, particularly in Southern California areas where brush fires last year stripped the hillsides of the vegetation that helps hold the soil in place. The authorities advised people living in those areas to have plenty of sandbags available and to watch for signs of flooding. Wind gusts forced some Lake Tahoe ski areas to shut down ski lifts on Thursday and even higher winds were expected on Friday and Saturday. After the Friday storm blows through, another is expected to arrive on Saturday afternoon bringing showers and the possibility of thunderstorms and hail. |

Subject: RE: BS: Weather news From: Bee Date: 05 Jan 08 - 12:00 PM We are finally getting a break from snowstorms and deep cold in the Maritimes. It's sunny and only -2C, and supposed to be moderate for a few days. Mind you, everything is covered with snow over about four inches of solid ice. I had to hack ice off the garbage box lid because it was so heavy i couldn't lift it - knowing my lifting capacity, I'd say there was at least 35kg. of ice on top of a 10kg. lid. Stay safe in those flood prone places, people - and out of avalanche territory. I expect this could be a bad year for avalanches. |
