Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Mr. Moon From: GUEST Date: 17 Sep 07 - 08:28 AM Our song went ..... Good night to Mr. Moon. We shall have to go and leave you. Good night to Mr. Moon. Come again to see us soon, And when we are asleep, through the window pane you peep. We wake up and shout out, "Good night to Mr. Moon." Have you got a mother dear like the one we have down here? Do you ever rest in your starry nest? Good night to Mr. Moon. We shall have to go and leave you. Good night to Mr. Moon. Come again to see us soon. Think from 1930 any one know as my gran sang this and my mother to me. Thanks from JO |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Goodnight Mr Moon From: GUEST,Heather Ringstead Date: 22 May 10 - 03:16 PM My Mother and Grandmother (b. 1904) used to sing this to me and my sister when we were little and I sang it to my daughter too. The words we sing are exactly the same as Debbie Guest wrote them ("reply to thread" dated 30 Dec 07) but we sing another "Good night" after the final "Good night Mr Moon". I have trawled the internet and haven't been able to find out who wrote it or sang it originally. It is good to know that other people are still singing this lullaby. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Goodnight Mr Moon From: GUEST,Tannywheeler Date: 17 May 10 - 09:57 PM I know a round: "Mr. Moon, Mr. Moon you're out to soon. The Sun is still in the sky. Hurry back to bed & cover up your head And let the rest of the day go by." Not the same thing, I know. But fun to sing. Don't know if there's any recording of the tune. Tw |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Goodnight Mr Moon From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 May 10 - 10:24 PM I found another blog where someone else is looking for the rest of the lyrics. She quoted this: Goodnight Mr Moon, I shall have to go and leave you. Goodnight Mr Moon, Hurry home but come back soon. And when I'm asleep Through my window pane you'll peep And I'll wake up- And call out- Goodnight, Mr Moon. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Goodnight Mr Moon From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 May 10 - 04:30 PM Oops! Forgot to mention that the above transcription comes from sheet music that I found at Indiana University. (Click for PDF file.) In addition, I found that the Online 78-rpm Discography project lists the following recordings: Al Campbell & Henry Burr: GOODNIGHT MR MOON (Von Tilzer), Columbia A-1161, 1912. American Quartet: GOODNIGHT MR MOON (Dawson/Von Tilzer), Victor 17046, 1912. Will Osborne & His Orchestra: GOODNIGHT MR MOON, Melotone 12301, 1932. |
Subject: Lyr Add: GOOD-NIGHT MR. MOON (Dawson/Von Tilzer) From: Jim Dixon Date: 14 May 10 - 03:52 PM I was pretty excited when I first ran across references to this song, but it turns out not to be the same one most people are talking about. Oh well, might as well post it anyway. GOOD-NIGHT MR. MOON (Words, Eli Dawson. Music, Albert Von Tilzer) 1. Honey dear, this nook is lonely. I have a fear Someone is near. Let's move from here. I would feel funny if someone were to hear Sweet nothings that you whisper in my ear. The moon is shining. Folks can't help but know. Bid him "good-night" and then perhaps he'll go. CHORUS: Good-night, good-night, Mister Moon. Hide your face so we can spoon. We just can't make love in front of you (and why not?) Don't you see that we are bashful too? Good-night, good-night, Mister Moon. Close your bright eyes. Won't you go to sleep? And don't you dare to peep. Good-night (good-night, good-night), Mister Moon. 2. Honey dear, the winds are blowing. I have a fear Raindrops are near. It's lightning, dear. I can hear thunder. We must run home quick, dear, 'Cause mother doesn't worry when you're near. The moon's so angry, tears he has to shed. He knew just what we meant when we both said: CHORUS Words, Eli Dawson. Music, Albert Von Tilzer. New York: The York Music Co., 1911. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Goodnight Mr Moon From: GUEST,Patricia Chippendale Nelson in Lancashire Date: 11 May 10 - 09:24 AM Hello there, I used to sing this song with my sister and parents whenever we had been out for the day. I have frequently searched for a copy but always to no avail. Hope someday someone will turn up with a copy |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Goodnight Mr Moon From: GUEST,Judith Date: 05 May 10 - 05:57 PM Hi All, Same as Gaynors version, my Nan also sang it to us in the 60s, she was born 1908. It had been playing on my mind for a while and I had to look it up and found this thread! We are in West Wales so it looks like it probably was widely known! Something that was mentioned was it could have been an Olvatinees song and that rings a bell, I think I can remember my mother saying something of the sort. Thanks a lot for sharing memories |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Goodnight Mr Moon From: GUEST,Gaynor Date: 12 Apr 10 - 10:57 AM sorry forgot to say that ours went:- Goodnight Mr Moon, We will have to go and leave you, Goodnight Mr Moon, Come again and see us soon, And when we're asleep Through the window pane you'll peep, We'll wake up and call out Good night Mr Moon. Out along the Milky way Is there any place like home? Have you got a mummy dear Like the one we have down here? In your starry nest do you ever rest, Goodnight Mr Moon |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Goodnight Mr Moon From: GUEST,Gaynor Date: 12 Apr 10 - 10:51 AM My Gran also used to sing this to me, back in the 60's and i still sing it to my children . We live in bucks, and because of the age , i wondered if it may have been an ovalteenies song? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Goodnight Mr Moon From: GUEST,julie Date: 07 Mar 10 - 11:43 AM My grandma used to sing this to all of us: Goodnight, Mr. Moon. Very soon into bed we'll be creeping, As you trace in your face sweet moonbeams gently peeping. Goodnight, Mr. Moon. High up there in your house so bright, Look down on the sleeping children. Goodnight, Mr. Moon, goodnight. |
Subject: RE: Goodnight Mr Moon From: GUEST,Deb Date: 30 Dec 07 - 06:58 PM Hi Sarah Glad to be of help. I am in the South of England (Kent) which is some way from Lancashire so I imagine it was known more widely at one time. I'll be watching this thread with interest to see if anyone else has any more information. Deb |
Subject: RE: Goodnight Mr Moon From: GUEST,Guest Sarah Date: 30 Dec 07 - 06:20 PM Hi Debbie, Many thanks for that you've really made my day, It is lovely to hear how someone else has enjoyed the rhyme, and shared it with their family as I still do. Hopefully someone else out there may know more. Thanks also to Katlaughing and Mick for you're support of my quest. If anyone else has further info re origin and further versions I would love to hear. I am originally from Lancashire, England. Is it known only to there or further a field? Heres hoping Sarah |
Subject: RE: Goodnight Mr Moon From: GUEST,Deb Horn Date: 30 Dec 07 - 04:18 AM Hi Sarah My nan (born 1905) sang this to my mum, my mum sang it to me and I did to my boys. The words I know are slightly different to yours. There is a tune to the verse that you have printed and then my nan would add another verse which was spoken rather than sung. These are the words I know Goodnight Mr Moon, we will have to go and leave you Goodnight Mr Moon, come again to see us soon And when we're asleep Through the window you will peep And we'll wake up and call out Goodnight Mr Moon Up and down the moonbeams bright Do the fairies dance all night? Nursie says "I'm sure they do" So of course it must be true In your starry nest Do you ever rest? Goodnight Mr Moon I have no idea of the origin but love the rhyme. My younger son, in particular, used to ask me to sing it every night when he was very young. I'm so glad someone else knows it too! |
Subject: RE: Goodnight Mr Moon From: katlaughing Date: 28 Dec 07 - 04:42 PM Thanks for the link, Mick. Looks as though there are several similar songs. I only had linked and copied the others as possibles for the one "Guest, Sarah" is apparently looking for. |
Subject: RE: Goodnight Mr Moon From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 28 Dec 07 - 03:00 PM kat - it's not the one you linked - the lyrics for that are available online (Goodnight Mister Moon) and they're not the same (doesn't have to mr moon). Mick |
Subject: RE: Goodnight Mr Moon From: katlaughing Date: 28 Dec 07 - 01:22 PM You can listen to a portion of it on THIS CD, though the audio is kind of muffled.
