Hi folks,

I am looking for the lyrics of a song performed by the scottish band "North Sea Gas". It's called "Rosslyn" and is a song about the Rosslyn Chapel (Da Vinci Code and so on, you know...).
Has anybody the lyrics ?

By for now,

yours Frank
(from Hannover-Germany)

Try Google! From which you get their website (see above), from which you can download at least part of the song and many others. Maybe even buy the CD? (It tells you where to order online on the website.)

North Sea Gas recorded ROSSLYN on their album "Rosslyn." Their web site (see Tatie Bogle's link) has a generous 1-minute sound sample from which I transcribed this chorus:

If you don't believe Da Vinci, come along and I'll convince ye.
I'll tell you all some history that will thrill you tae the bone.
The Celtic Christian pagan rites of masons and the temple rites(?)
Come to Rosslyn Chapel for it's written there in stone.

[There are a couple more verses in that sound sample, but I found them harder to understand.]

Here's my transcription. There are a few doubtful words and phrases.

ROSSLYN
Written by Dave Gilfillan
As sung by North Sea Gas on "Rosslyn" (2007)

CHORUS: If you don't believe Da Vinci, come along and I'll convince ye.
I'll tell you all some history that will thrill you to the bone.
There's Celtic Christian pagan rites of Masons and of Templar knights.
Come to Rosslyn Chapel for it's written there in stone.

1. It's a fascinating engagement
To be told of things so ancient,
With old(?) and fine arrangement.
Come along and have a look.
You can do without a saunter
As around the place you wander.
It'll make you think and ponder.
Someone should write the book! CHORUS

2. There are green men(?) growing old
As the season do unfold,
Telling stories yet untold.
Make of it what you wish.
There are theories written of the craft,
Some that are plainly daft,
Others that will make you laugh.
Most of them are rubbish. CHORUS

3. You may think it all authentic,
Or you may be a sceptic,
Or simply enjoy the rhetoric
And tales of days gone by.
You may seek the Holy Grail,
And your Hospitallers' trail,
And you're thinking you may prevail.
Well, at least you can give it a try. CHORUS

4. You're something aye(?) mistook,
'Cause if you care to look,
They're selling Dan Brown's book
In the shop at Rosslyn Chapel.
His writing was a sin.
It's enough to make you grim [or "grin"?].
By Christ, they're packing the tourists in,
So blast away; nae hassle. CHORUS

5. There are Europeans and Asians,
And folk frae every nation.
Chinese and Japanese
Stand beneath the roof of stars.
There are upset theologians,
Gregorians and historians.
Some of them seem Napoleons.
There's busloads coming frae Mars. CHORUS

6. So you've read it in the papers
About the Rosslyn capers—
Gold in secret chambers
Hidden somewhere underground.
"As a depository full of allegory,
Covering each and every category,
I did it categorically.
The secret's still to be found!" CHORUS TWICE

Rosslyn : Dave Gilfillan . North Sea Gas.

ROSSLYN
(Dave Gilfillan)

CHORUS: If you don't believe da Vinci, come along And I'll convince ye.
I'll tell ye o' some history that will thrill ye tae the bone.
There's Celtic, Christian, pagan rites there's Masons and there's Templar knights
Come to Rosslyn chapel for it's written there in stone.

It's a fascinating engagement to be told of things so ancient
Laid out in fine arrangement; come along and have a look.
You can do it at a saunter as around the place ye wander.
It will make you think and ponder: "Someone should write a book."

There are green men growing old* as the seasons do unfold,
Telling stories yet untold; make of it what you wish.
There are theories written of the craft, some that are plainly daft,
Others of which will make you laugh, "But most of them are rubbish."

You may think it all authentic, or you maybe a sceptic,
Or simply enjoy the rhetoric in tales of days gone by.
If you seek the Holy Grail and you're hotfoot on its trail,
You're thinking you may prevail, well at least you can give it a try.

Here's something I mistook!! 'cause if you care tae take a look,
They're selling Dan Brown's book in the shop at Rosslyn Chapel.
His writing was a sin, but it's enough to make you grin.
By Christ, they're packing the tourists in, so blasphemy is nae hassle.

There are Europeans and Asians and folk from every nation.
Chinese and Japanese stand beneath the roof o stars.
They are upset theologians, Gregorians and historians.
Some of them Singaporeans; there's bus loads coming frae Mars.

So you've read it in the papers all about the Rosslyn capers:
Scrolls and secret chambers hidden somewhere underground.
It's a repository full of allegory covering each and every category.
I state it categorically: "There's still secrets to be found."

* Green men verse two refers to the Green man images in the chapel which represent rebirth etc. as you walk around the chapel you will find that the images appear to be growing older. spring, summer, autumn, winter.

Now that is a darn good song.

I live in Midlothian and it's hard to escape that stuff - nobody argues with occult tourism as long as it brings the money in. Except that Roslin village itself, right next to the chapel, is completely bypassed by the bus tours; I'm not sure they've even got a village pub left.

Love the song.Roslin has lost its quiet sanctity since the books came out.
Complete thread creep. Many of the substantial houses in Roslin village were built to house the masons who in Victorian times re furbished the worn carvings on the pillars and interior. The houses had all mod cons with fully fitted bathrooms for the masons who ranged from master masons to specially chosen apprentices. They came from all over Scotland and saw it as an honour to work on the chapel.

The Original Hotel is a pretty lively pub! We have played for various ceilidhs there.
And some great walks in the area too.

Good, I thought that one had closed.

Could they be persuaded to hold music sessions? I have always wanted to write a dance tune and name it after the place. And watch a caller trying to introduce it when it was used as the alternative tune for a well-known dance... should be good for a few PRS royalties.

Go for it, Jack! (The tune I mean.) Not sure about the sessions: you could always ask and let us know!
