From: Charley Noble
Date: 12 Jan 08 - 11:16 AM

Roll & Go will be performing sea songs at Andy's Old Port Pub from 5 - 8 pm on Sunday, January 20th.

We had a great time with our first performance at this pub in December 30th but we'd really love to see more folks come out and share the experience. Admission is FREE but donations are accepted and appreciated.

The Pub's address is 94 Commercial Street in Portland's Old Port, next
to Gilbert's Chowder House, and their phone number for more information
is 874-2639.

Roll & Go is a Portland based nautical singing group that has been featured at the Mystic Sea Music Festival, and at festivals and concerts throughout Maine and New Hampshire. The group has been singing for more than 15 years and has two CD's to its credit:

OUTWARD BOUND, 2002
ROLLING DOWN TO SAILORTOWN, 2006

The website address for more info on Roll & Go is: Click here for a knotty and nautical time!

We're going to try to make this a monthly happening through the spring. The management is very supportive. The pub food and brew are excellent. The room is long and narrow but there is comfortable room for a couple of dozen people, and it sounds great when everyone is singing along on chorus or refrain.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

I would hope you would include something new as well, along the lines of "Pancho and Lefty."

Spaw-

In your dreams!

However, we'll probably be singing a few contemporary nautical ditties such as "Dramamine" and the hauling shanty "Tanqueray Martini-o."

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

That's Maine, not Oregon, right?

Either way, it's a bit out of my area; I wish I could be there, adding to the audience-participation in that long narrow room.

PoppaGator-

It's Maine the last time I looked out the window, with a foot of snow blowing around.

In the 4th week of July my wife has a conference in New Orleans and I might tag along, see if I can connect with you and a few friends to raise a glass and a few songs.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Hey Charley,

Be sure to PM me as the time approaches.

Our shanty group has been only occasionally active since Katrina, but things seem to be starting back up. July may or may not provide an opportunity to get togther with the whole gang ~ we often have problems assembling a "quorum" during the summer, because those able to leave town for the hottest months often do so.

Some of these people have boats, and go wherever the hell they want!

I would think that you and your mates would face the same kind of population crisis during your Maine winters, but then again maybe all the boats are locked in the ice...

Well, it seems we need to build our own audience at this pub. No one from the local Mudcats have posted in. They would be more than welcome and the price is right. Admission is FREE, although I expect the management would appreciate it if something was ordered from the bar or kitchen.

If the management is encouraged by the turnout, we plan to do another round 4 weeks from Sunday.

We'll have fun, and whoever shows up will have fun too.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Sorry to be late posting, Charley. As always, I'd love to go but I won't know until the day itself whether it's possible.   In any case, I'll be cheering you on and hoping you have a grand time with an enthusiastic audience.

I know the feeling Charley. It is like pulling teeth to get people to travel a mile to see first class performances that even include free food and drink. Embarrassing even, when someone has travelled across an ocean to perform and I can't find 7 people to support the effort.
Recently, I was approached by a local with a new Folk Music website who writes for local papers. He will be doing an interview piece on the local music scene and feature our house concert series. It will either overload my circuits with electric guitars or produce a banjo player or two. I will let you know.

Sorry guys - that was not meant to be a criticism. More an observation that even though people love the music, life interferes. The 45 minute trip to The Press Room sometimes is a problem when there is laundry to be done, litters to be cleaned, etc. Sometimes people just forget.

Charley, if we're ever in the same room I'll demand "Tanqueray Martini-O!" And consume appropriately the while.

Perhaps a Martini-gargle on chorus.

We'll be doing "Tanqueray Martini-O" as well as "Dramamine." We do have fun and it's nice to get a reaction from the new folks listening. We'll also be doing "Dead Dog Cider" with our show-and-tell Bendigo.

I should mention that the pub has a restaurant license which means that families with children are welcome. And for those who have to catch the football game, there a nice big screen but don't expect to have the sound turned on while we're singing.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Well, with some fear and trepidation we showed up at Andy's Old Port Pub knowing that the Patriots would be battling the Chargers in the other half of the room. We set up our equipment and everything seemed to work fine. Those who wantd to hear us, could hear us, which included a dozen or so friends. And the other dozen of so folks at the bar seemed to be paying more attention to us than the game, positive attention. It may have helped that the Patriots took early charge of the game.

I was pleased to see one couple that I hadn't seen for ten years, since we closed down the Portland Folk Club. He a fine fiddler. Another fella, Jeff Amueller, does a regular Wednesday evening gig at the same pub but had come in just to listen to us. I plan to listen to his first set next week when I come into Portland for Roll & Go practice (we do practice!) Then there was the old family friend who came in with his daughter who plans to crew next summer on a Camden windjammer, and then go off to the Maine Maritime Academy; maybe she can get us a gig there. People sang along on the choruses and made appropriate noises at some of our silly songs.

The manager and her husband seem really pleased to work with us, and we're looking at another run in February, probably Sunday the 17th, 5 to 8 pm.

Hey, they even gave us an employee discount on food and drinks!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
