Subject: BS: Bobert Seriously Messed Up....
From: Bobert
Date: 14 Feb 08 - 06:11 PM

Well, I'll kee[p- it short 'cuase I have to... I've been having back problems and went to a massauge therapist who seriously messed me up by putting pressure in my right armpit which set off a series of spasams down my right side, my right arm and has left mje with numbness in two fingers...

I'm now on muscle relaxers, heavy duty anti-imflamatories, hot and cold compresses five times a day, electrical stimulation to the affected muscles and physical theerapy a couple times a week...

I should have listened to the P-Vine and just gone to PT to begin with... I hate it when women is right...

Well, that's all the pudder time I can stand...

Back to the heat pad...

Bobert

Oh man, Bobert you done gone got your self in a mess now boy. Don't rightly know if I should put my opinion of most chiropractors in writing, but I do know the pukka Physio, trains a lot longer for the job, so knows their way around best.
Anyway, I hope you get some ease for that spasm, and try drinking from smaller glasses to reduce the strain on your back.
Hoping you get better quick.
Giok

Snap Bobert same thing happened to me today, I went see the bone man and he tugged me about for a bit, it was my left hip that causing the trouble, got to go back to see him again tomorrow, says its going to be a long fight - but as you know I'm used to those - wish you well with yours its not a thing you'd wish on your worst enemy.

By the bye Bobert heard your CD the other day - you're one hell of a good performer.

I'm so sorry to hear that Bobert. I'm having PT now for a knee which was injured when I plunged into a hole in a Presbyterian parking lot. (It was dark and the hole was in the shadow of the curb.)

Isnt it a drag? The exercises are so-o-o boring. But when I'm at the clinic, I relieve that some by starting conversations with the others.
Maybe you can do the same.

Here ya go, Bobert. This'll cheer ya up.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Amid a discussion of trade in 1973, Chairman Mao Zedong made what Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger called a novel proposition: sending tens of thousands, even 10 million, Chinese women to the United States.

"You know, China is a very poor country," Mao said, according to a document released by the State Department's historian office. "We don't have much. What we have in excess is women. So if you want them we can give a few of those to you, some tens of thousands."

A few minutes later, Mao circled back to the offer. "Do you want our Chinese women?" he asked. "We can give you 10 million."

After Kissinger noted Mao was "improving his offer," the chairman said, "We have too many women ... They give birth to children and our children are too many."

"It is such a novel proposition," Kissinger replied in his discussion with Mao in Beijing. "We will have to study it."

Bobert, you're going to meet a whole bunch of nice people. They have names like Olga, The Lash, and Madame Shackles. Do what they tell you. In fact, you will have no choice BUT to do as they tell you. I've had PT several times and it's not to bad after you get used to the pain, the handcuffs, the whips, the gags, the blindfolds, and people in leather underwear and high-heeled boots.

Things your quack won't tell you.

Lay off the caffeine, the last thing you need is something that is going to wake up those nerves.

If you take pain killers of any kind, go to bed and stay there. If you move around while you are on pain killers you will only make matters worse 'cos you wont be able to feel that you are straining things more.

Don't keep your wallet in your back pants pocket 'cos that will skew your spine (actually a chiropractor did tell me that one).

Find a small pillow or cushion to put in the small of your back when you are sitting. Especially in the car.

WHen you are picking something up, bend your knees, don't bend at the waist. This takes practice but it is worth it.

Relax and get well soon.

I feel for ya' Bobertz 'cause amongst the various other surgeries I've had is back surgery. Now while what you got may be different and with a different solution and all than what I had, may I humbly make an outlandish suggestion? I mean this may not be the popular thing to do but have you considered going to see a real fuckin' doctor? No, not a urologist specializing in sexual perfomance, I mean a real honest to gawd person with a specialty in maybe, say, orthopedics?

Ya' know, muscles are controlled by nerves and all and both muscle and nerve have more than a passing acquaintance with bone............spasms might be more than muscle related and all................

Real doctor.............wow, what a concept......................

You should also start having the neighbors bring the 'shine to ya instead of walkin' up into the hills, dodgin' revenoors and all. Down were you live you should be able to put the quart jars on the back porch each night and pick up full ones in the mornin' in time for breakfast.

Ain't nothin' like Lucky Charms and 'shine for breakfast. Builds ya up strong.

If you want to take Spaw's advice one step further and get some of the moves of the chiro-quacker without the pain, find a DO. Doctor of Osteopathy. They turned out a lot of them here in Fort Worth. They are medical doctors with the extra hands-on training. I hurt my back one time (it hurts just to remember crawling to the phone with only a two-year-old in the house with me) and we didn't have a regular doctor yet. I remarked to the now-ex on our way to the emergency room that too bad we didn't have someone local to see first. On impulse we stopped at the neighborhood minor emergency clinic, run by DOs. Amazing--the doctor said "I don't get a chance to do this very often," turned me on my side, put a hand on my shoulder and on my hip and did this twist - Pop! went something in my spine. Had me roll to the other side, hands on shoulder and hip again, and Pop! Pop! and it was instant relief! I took motrin for a few days, no bed rest and muscle relaxants, just taking it easy. The back was tender, but back in position. The relief was instantaneous.

I got the impression from the opening post that Bobert has seen an MD, at least since the incident with the message therapist:

"I'm now on muscle relaxers, heavy duty anti-imflamatories, hot and cold compresses five times a day, electrical stimulation to the affected muscles and physical therapy a couple times a week..."

The first two things he mentions would seem to be prescription medications, no? They'd only be available (well, only be legally available) through a licensed medical doctor, or at least a nurse-practitioner working within the recognized medical establishment.

go for anything that stops the muscle spasms now and then find an Alexander technique teacher--you will feel (temporarily) weightless after a lesson, you won't have had your bones crunched or your muscles mauled, and eventually you'll learn to keep the problems away yourself. I swear by it. Good luck recovering.

My back is not what it once was - but after I damaged it by being optimistic (resulting in a nastly little man with red-hot pliers who lived in my left buttock) I saw a respected sports therapist who achieved nothing, a series of doctors culminating is a full-body imaging job in Harley street (insured!) who found a little bit of disc damage but achieved nothing, several osteopaths and finally a chiropractor who suggested losing weight and getting fit, which I did (all gone back to where it was now). Lots of clunking metal about in gymns and I was fine. Must have been about 30 years ago.

I just have to be a bit careful about how I lift things, but not how much I lift.

Get outta spaz quick Bobertz. Work on getting your chi back on track. You have somehow short circuited yoreself and disrupted the natchal flow obv life flow electrons and tripped the breaker. Try not to mix concrete or dig drainfield ditches while in this condition. You keep forgettin' that you're 3 or 7 hundred years old so go hire immigrants from yore local Home Depot parking lot to do that stuff. They are the hardest working people on the planet and will be glad to do it.

Aslo, the ice is your friend while in extreme spaz. Heat is the enemy and only enlarges blood vessels in the muscles allowing more pressure to form around your spazzed out sections and will produce even more swelling. Feels good for a while but will make you worse in the end. I recommend finding a frozen pond and laying out in the middle til just before spring thaw.

Love you brother and get well soon. I know it ain't no fun being stove up.

Yores,
Tweed

Man, I juts don't know about the heat and ice arguments... The PT lady says that if the heat is a wet heat that's good as ice but you have made some purdy intersecting observations here so, okay, I'll try the pond... Maybe take my heat pad down there with me so I can alternate 'tween 'um... Maybe a couple Chinese womenz and a six pack of Iron City... Hmmmmmm??? Maybe I can get the P-Vine to unroll the 200 foot tension cord and take my little TV down there, too... And a couple old issues of Mad magazine... And, and...

Okay, that's 'bout my Mudville limit... I can onhly do about 5 minutes before the stove gets on me...

Tell the Peavine to poke you with a stick from a safe distance every once in a while or put a line around your ankles and drag you to some fresh ice with the Kubota. It'll be good for both of you. Yeah, actually they do make a thing that you can hang upsidedown from by your feet. You get into the thing, place your feet in the holders, then shift your weight back a bit and it rotates you upsidedown, and you hang there for a bit. It is good for stretching the back out. I had one of those things for a few years and eventually sold it to someone else because I had no particular handy place to put it at the time. It was kind of bulky.

Sort of like one of those forlorn exercise bikes you see standing in someone's basement collecting dust.

I am sometimes sorry I did sell it, because it really did work quite well for easing out the back.

Eb,

I'z still seriously messed up... Ain't worth a danged... Ben pushing two weeks now and the PVine has been talkin' about shootin' me... I even snuck out last night and removed the shells from the 12 guage...

She's afraid of the 22/410 so I don't think she'd off me with that one an' I might need it to defend myself so it's still loaded... But nobody tell her that...

LOL...

Nah, not much happenin' toward gettin' back into the game... I cancelled my upcomin' Saturday night gig... First gig I have ever had to cancel in my life...

But, like mah man Barak, I have hope... The PT lady says that we are gonna get it fixed and has me on lots of stretches which hurt put like they say, "No gain without pain"...

Well, bobert, it must be catchy. I'm headed for physio because I have a dysfunctional SI joint - whatever that is.

Every once in awhile I can't get up from a sitting position because the inside of my hip (pelvis) gets locked. I have to sit back down, twist and pop it back into place. As soon as its back in position, I have no pain.

They say its because my butt is so saggy, that the muscles aren't helping to hold the SI joint in place. So now I have to build up my butt.

I guess it could be worse.

Why do people here keep talking about chiropractors in relation to Bobert's problems? It was a massage therapist that he went to. Chiropractic and massage therapy are two different disciplines.

Having had both more than a few times, I can tell you that they are very different disciplines...although both of them naturally require having some specialized knowledge about how muscle tension occurs in the body.

I so far know about people who been messed up by treatment from...

chiropractors
regular MDs
surgeons
dentists
radiation therapy
chemotherapy
massage therapy
prescription drugs
psychotherapy
etc...

I also know people who've benefited greatly from most of the above...

(though I can't say for sure about the chemotherapy and the radiation therapy...but there are probably people who figure they've been helped by those too)

Point being: Any form of therapy, no matter how good it is when done right, can sometimes go wrong, because not all practitioners are perfect...and they are not gods. They can make mistakes, just like the rest of us.

I would not, for instance, swear off ALL dentists for the rest of my life because one dentist did a lousy root canal job on me...and I've heard some real horror stories about dentistry gone wrong, let me tell you. Scary stuff.

Just a short update...

This thing really sucks...

After 3 weeks of PT, steroids, anti-imflamatories, stretching, heat pads, ice, prayin', watchin' way too much CNN an' reading ol' Mad magazines I'z still got this pinched nerve...

I can't drive my tractor... I can't shoot my gun... I can't play my geetar... Worst of all, I can't chase the P-Vine around the house...

Like I said, this thing sucks...

Plus, after about 5 minutes at the pudder, I've had enough...

That really sucks...

But other than that it's kinda like the guy who yelled from the 86th story window of the Empire State Building to the man who had just jumped, "How's it going?" and the jumper yelled back, "So far, so good...."

Nevermind...

There are good oneas and bad ones, as in any practicing field; but they ar enot fiundamentally quacks, and all you need is to have that damn pinch shifted out over two or three visits and you'll know that for yourself.

Treating muscles and bones and nerves as interacting systems is not quackery. NEither is trying to get a body to heal itself as much a spossible rather than be invaded with blades or outside chemistry. 'COurse every tool has its place in the armory; if you have really ruptured a disk, I doubt chiropractic can do much for you, but it sounds miore like a serious dislocation from what you have said. Get someone on it who understands dislocations and how to remedy them. Check out their patients for recommendations if you're worried abotu a bad one. Find a female one if you can, as they tend to be more understanding and approach things in a gentler gradient.
Not always, though.

Oh, for heaven's sake! "Quacks" GAHHH! I have been getting chiropractic treatments off and on for the past 35 years. They have always been good. They have always been helpful. Every chiropractor I've ever gone to (and that's 10 or 15 of them by now) has been great. None has ever hurt me. All of them were very good at what they did and very knowledgable.

I have never in my life heard such an utter load of crap about anything else in the medical field as I have heard from various uninformed people about chiropractors being "quacks".

I want to kick someone when I hear them say it.

Dang, Bob, sorry this is still going on.

I've seen several different chiropractors over the years, with results varying from pretty good to unbelieveably excellent. Some of the best have been the wackiest, if not the quackiest ~ i.e., new-age hippie types.

My favorite ever was a Vietnamese guy, Dr. Ky (pronounced "Kee") who was licensed in the US as a chiropractor but was "really" an acupressurist. That's right ~ not acupuncture, but acupressure. And he didn't really press very hard at all; he find the right spot on your body, just barely touch it, and fix you right up. Sadly, his ground-floor office took about ten feet of water thanks to the levee failures after Katrina, and he hasn't been seen since.

More recently, I've gotten very good results seeing a full-fledged needle-weilding acupuncturist, a young anglo-American woman. I had been walking around with a chronic sore shoulder for months, and three visits clearedit right up. It's been about a year now since my last treatment, with no recurrence. (Those tiny little ultra-thin needles, by the way, don't hurt at all going in.)

If I were you, I'd lay off that CNN and watch the old movie channel (TCM) and lots of sports. Reality sucks!

I had an excellent female chiropractor here in Orillia for a few years. She was also quite an athlete...competed regularly in the Triathlon. Unfortunately she sustained a bad back injury herself, and had to quit doing chiropractic, because it involves a lot of bending and lifting (of the clients, some of whom are very heavy people). What a shame! It was like seeing a great singer lose their voice.

Her husband IS a chiropractor, Doug, and a very good one, but there are some back injuries which even the best medical techniques, whatever discipline they may be a part of, cannot fully heal. And that, unfortunately, was the case with hers.

Chongo does do back jobs on people, matter of fact...if they ask for it in the right way. He did one on Little Anthony Mazarelli just last week. Little Anthony used to be an enforcer for one of the south end Chicago gangs. He didn't respect chimps. Now he's got a new job...nourishing next year's fresh crop of grass at the local cemetery.

I would not recommend one of Chongo's back jobs for your problem, Bobert, although he does offer a lifetime guarantee.

Good for her (P-Vine). I am highly suspicious about the prevalence of a lot of unnecessary surgery in this society, Bobert, so I'm on your side when it comes to this one. Follow your own best instincts. Surgery is the LAST option, as far as I'm concerned. Human bodies can usually repair themselves over a period of time, given the right encouragement.

Yes, there are some exceptions, of course, so if anyone wishes to remind me of that too...hey...I already know it.

Right. I'll agree with that, Sorcha. So far, he doesn't seem very positive about the idea of surgery, but as you say, it might be an option. So might a number of other things.

I've had a shoulder bothering me for, oh, a couple of months at least. Irritated rotator cuff. The chiropractor gave me some stretches to do each day, and I'm gradually easing it out and getting those irritated muscles to relax and settle down. As they relax more, they stop hurting. It's getting better steadily.

Heck, Sorch, yer right...

If I need surgery I'll juist tell the doc that I'm fonna either do it myself 'er have Rap do it... Heck, he even provides the bullet to chomp down on... Can't beat that, can ya'...

But right now, cuttin' would be my last resort... I been thru lotta stuff in my life, including 6 months in a polio ward, and I ain't been cut on yet...

Okay, if after I have done absolutely everything else, includin' chiroprators, acupunctureres, cannibus, medictation, PT, thi chi, and bowin' down to Mecca and I'z still messed up then I'll get Rap here to assist or supervise 'er whatever..

BTW, this little electrical tinglin' in my right hand is starting to grow on me... The pain sucks but the tinglin' is kinda different... I could live with it... Kinda like havin' ones fingers in a light socket... Nop, it ain't cool but it's different...

Gotta go lie down now...

Surgery should ALWAYS be a last resort. Hell, they're gonna cut into your body and probably cut something out of it! But don't reject it out of hand. It might be the only way.

By the way, the cancer my wife had is rarely treated by surgery these days. It certainly wouldn't be treated as hers was, with a radical dissection of the neck. But that was then and this is now and she's alive and I'm danged glad she is.

Bobert, I think you're right about not needing them doctors to treat you.
I looked up your symtoms in my "Big Picture Book Of Medical Stuff" and I think I know what's going on. It's either a touch of Nile River Lung Worm, or you have Schistosomiasis Bilhartsia of the rotator cuff.
It's not real clear, but you mighta got one or t'other from eating uncooked bear meat from Egypt.
I'm sure the rest of my Muddoctor collegues will back me up.
Now that we cleared that up, just send a check for whatever you think is fair.
Here's hopin' you feel better soon.

It's the right arm Bobert?? The one you hold the 30/06 up against while shooting bears, bottles and other critters??

Bad Karma bro and this needs Reverse Karmic Reconsolidation Maneuvers.

First, remove the wood stocks from all your rifles and shotguns and burn them along with any of the bear's bones. Use a seal blubber accelerant to make sure everything is consumed and apply a liberal coat of the ash/blubber remains to your whole body, then string all the barrels and metal hardware into windchimes and on breezy nights, dance nekkid in the moonlight to the tunes it makes. This won't heal yore right arm but will keep anything from screwing with the left one.

As for surgury, I can't tell you nothin' as I am not keen on that either. Hope you gets better before you have to think seriously about that. I do know three of the local redneck hunters that I work with who've had to do rotor cuff surgury and I think it's got somethin' to do with recoil slamming into their armpits. I don't shoot, and I ain't had it and I've done the same work as they do for 28 years. Yas, yas, not very scientific but sorta makes sense in a motherwit way.

See, Bobert, I done had the shot. Man shot my knee with some freeze stuff to cool it down so's I wouldn't feel the needle much (and I didn't) and filled the knee joint up with a mixture of cortisone and lidocaine. Stuff looked like skim milk in the hypo. Felt like the joint was all full of liquid, which it was. Kinda like if you was a water balloon. Didn't really hurt any and he even put a bandaid on it. If you was nice you could probably git a Square Bob Spongepants bandaid or one of them kinds.

The shot took down the swelling and helped with the pain the swelling caused, but I still got trouble. Now in a week or so I gotta call him and arrange for an MRI and maybe surgery, if things don't git better instead.

Like I told Amos over in the MOAB, this has fixed it so I can't play my trumpet. That's cause I play the trumpet with my toes.

Then I talked with his wife, and the story shades a little differently. She's been sleep deprived for two weeks because she's up with him every couple of hours, he gets huffy that "she just doesn't care", he doesn't understand why he has to remind her that it's time for his pain medication...

Bobert

I had this in the lumbar region a few years back. I stayed away from the doctors and underwent quite a lot of chiropractic, together with complete rest, which solved the problem.

An orthopaedic consultant later told me that, if it hadn't been for the chiropractic I would have had to have that surgery, which can leave problems of its own, I believe.

All good wishes to you - I know how painful a herniated disc can be.

I had an MRI 7-8 years ago...had bone spur on 3rd cervical vertebra which pinched the nerve to my arm. I got a shot of Cortisone right in the area to shrink the tissue. It helped a LOT, but I still have to be very careful about how I move my neck. I do this to avoid surgery.

I have no doubt this is not nearly the problem as a herniated disc...but maybe it's worth asking the doc about.

Oh Jeez, Bobert - I hope they don't have to amputate at the neck!

Seriously, whatever the MRI shows, and whatever is recommended - get a second opinion.   If the recommendations are very ambiguous, then get a third opinion, preferably from outside of your immediate hospital region.

If I can find it again I'll send you some links on interesting research regarding orthopedics. There are significant regional differences in how often surgery to the spine is recommended, and the rates of spinal surgery by region.

I do a fair amount of pain management work with people with chronic orthopedic pain. Outcomes post surgery with respect to pain tend to be generally better today than they were 15 or 20 years ago, but are clearly not guaranteed. The cervical area seems to be particularly delicate. Some orthopedic practices may be a bit too quick to recommend surgery (not for reasons of monetary gain, but because of perspective.) However, there appears to be a delicate balance when it comes to trying other things first. It would seem (and I am basing this primarily on client self-report) that damage to the cervical spine can be progressive if no intervention occurs, or if non-surgical interventions are unsuccessful and surgery is put off too long. A point can be reached where the damage is such that surgery is no longer a viable option, especially if you have arthritis, or develop arthritis as a result of the injury to the cervical spine.

If you already have have osteoarthritis or degenerative disc disease, or a strong family history of it with early onset, be sure you explore the implications with the doctors with whom you consult regarding possible outcomes when considering any of your options, surgical or otherwise.

Well..............You ain't gonna' like this but................

Herniated discs come in several types and affect the spine in different ways no matter where they are located...cervical, thoracic, or lumbar. The disc is a cushion that separates the vertebra and allow them to bend and move with some freedom. The disc itself has a reasonably firm "shell" and a softer interior. As we age the material gets harder......shame it ain't your.......uh, sorry........Anyway, "herniated" means ruptured or broken. Too often we call this a slipped disc. It isn't. Discs don't slip. Period. The end. Complete horseshit. You can't stick them back into place.

Every vertebra has notches in it that match with another notch in the discs above and below forming a hole for the nerve to pass through as it exits the spinal cord.   Where these nerves go determine much of where the pain is. For instance in what is commonly referred to as "sciatica" the nerve at the bottom of the last Lumbar vertebra becomes inflamed as the disc material pushes on it OR the vertebra themselves are too close and the nerve opening (intervertebral foramen) is too small. The inflamed nerve causes pain in the back itself and often continues for the length and branching of the nerve. In the case of the sciatic nerve the pain is in the lower back and will extend down through the buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, and clear to the foot.

The same thing happens wherever this occurs in the spinal column and the nerve affected can be only minimally aggravating or completely debillitating. It simply depends on how the disc is herniated and how badly. Many people can use the treatments of heat and cold as you have in conjunction with both rest and proper exercises to get past an acute attack. In some cases, anti-inflammatory meds are used and these are both the non-steroidal type such as Naprosyn or even Aspirin and the steroidal type which help in an even stronger way by binding with cortisol receptors. NONE OF THESE and no amount of manipulation will "cure" the problem. However if the hernaition is not severe and the acute phase can be managed through one or more of the above methods you will just need to be careful in the future, do the exercises, and jump on the drugs at the first sign of trouble.

On the other hand, the problem will still be there and may become worse as you go along. No legitimate orthopede will do surgery if it isn't warranted and that's why all the tests. Many of them will try various drug and exercise combinations and even refer you to pain clinics. But if it comes to the point where nothing helps...............................

Bobertz I know you know what a "Midget" is.   In '75 I had a bad crash and my lower back took a bad hit. As I aged I also developed a form of arthritis common to many that is not age dependent. Its called degenerative disc disease and that combined with the effect of the injury started creating problems. In my mid 30's I would have periods where I would be "out of action" for a week or longer. Most times I would "tough it out" like a dumbass and I took NSAIDs like candy, also like a dumbass. This meant that I hurt for months on end but I was somewhat able to do things. I'd have a month or two of "almost normal," then another attack. I was teaching Auto-Tech at a Vo-Tech when I was 40 and my back had become so bad that I could put no pressure on my legs at all. The lower back itself hurt so damn bad it was unbelievable.    As the school year ended I was unable to walk and EVERY position was pain filled, even laying down except in ridiculous positions. For a month I laid on a day bed and crawled back and forth to the bathroom.   The Ortho said I would need surgery and laid out the possible side effects which aren't all that appealing. But they ARE just POSSIBLE side effects and for me the question was simple. Can I live in this pain the rest of my life or not. I couldn't. I was at the point I was ready to kill to GET the surgery!

I came out of surgery with no problems and Karen will tell you that my worst time was the day after when they had promised to help me up out of bed. I was a mean bastard all day as I couldn't wait to see if the pain had really gone. I stood up to my full height for the first time in months and the pain was gone! I will never forget that feeling. I had three done--L4-L5-S1

I know other people who have had longer recoveries or been left with some problems like numbness. A friend of mine had a similar procedure as you are looking at and was amazed at how quickly he recovered. Another friend still has numbness almost 20 years later. Both would do it again as would I. I have had no problems since but when I think about the year I spent pre-op, it a gawdamn nightmare Man.........

For years I had tried all manner of manipulations and treatments from chiropractic to herbalists to hynotism to accupunture and none of it worked. If you understand how the back functions and what the discs do, you can see why. The problem is never truly repaired and IF it continues to worsen, only the surgical option will work. And btw, there are times they CAN'T do surgery.

So here's my message to you.........If you want to research something, find the best ortho you can in your area or even in the next large city. One of the keys to getting through ANY surgery (and I've had way too damn many) is to have confidence in the Cutter. When you are comfortable with the Doc and he says you need surgery, remember your other option which is live in pain. If your problem has become as bad as you are describing it, you probably DO need surgery. See what the MRI looks like but if you need surgery, DO IT. Or decide you can live with the pain for the rest of your life and have a Coke and a smile and shut the fuck up. I'll send my best thoughts and everyone else will as well but you're gonna' be in pain if its as bad as you say.

Damn but I feel good! Sorry 'bout you...............

Spaw-----passing on my best wishes, thoughts and TOUGH LOVE.

And, I had a herniated cervical disc, C5. The one just above the big bump on your neck. I put up with pain, numbness, severe muscle spasms, etc for years longer than I should have. When I finally started having such bad numbness that I was trying to drop the fiddle or bow, I saw a Neuro surgeon.

The chiropractic had sorta kept it at bay for years, but not fixed it. The hernia was bad....and yes, I got 3 opinons. All said, surgery. So I did.

It is called a laminectomy; basically they just go in and nip off the protruding part of the disc. Out patient surgery. In and out in 4 hours. NO troble from the surgery. I went fabric shopping after I got out of the surgery center.

The ONLY problem I had was that I turned out to be allergic to the absorble suture material they used, and so got an infection in the incision. If my Husband had been able to recognize infection, I'd have been fine much sooner. As it is, I have a pretty deep, ugly scar on the back of my neck just above the t shirt line. Doesn't bother ME, I can't see it. But it itches sometimes.

The fiddle is still all in one piece too.

Spaw, you hold him down (shouldn't be hard) and I'll do the cuttin'. Might was well just cut "everything" while we're at it, huh?

Stubborn danged hillbillies....

Bobert, you ever hear of Georgetown University Hospital? It's a big ol' hospital where they teach medicine. It's in a sleepy little town nearby you called Washington, DC. They got some purty good doctors there who teach other folks how to be doctors, kinda like a good banjo player is supposed to teach newbies, if there was such a thing as a good banjo player. The bone doctor in charge there is named Sam W. Wiesel. They also got a deal with Fairfax Hospital.

Now up in Charlottesville they got ANOTHER goddamn teaching hospital at the university up thatway. The boner in charge is named Cato T. Laurencin; he's a PhD and an MD and looks like he'd be a Memphis bluesman.

Now you gotta choice! DC, Charlottesville, or me and Spaw. Which is it gonna be?

I had a herniation between cervical disc 5&6 about 17 years ago and after consultations with 2 different orthopedic surgeons, 6 weeks of PT (which only aggravated things) and about 6 months of pain in my neck and shoulder which at times radiated down to the finger tips of my left hand I took the advice of a friend and got a home traction device from the local drug store. I used this very simple device, hung on the top of a door edge, 3 times a day for 20 minutes a session and in 2 weeks no more pain. I had a bit of a relapse 2 months later and did another 2 weeks on it and haven't had any problems in that area since. Just my story.Good luck.

I had a similar problem, and but vibro-massage and specific exercise it was cured. If I get a return twinge I do the neck exercise the physio gave me at that time, and it goes away again.

Since we honestly don't know what Bobert's problem is...no, let me rephrase that.

Since we honestly don't know what THIS problem of Bobert's is, I think we have to wait for the MRI results.

I rephrased that because we know what Bobert's problem(s) is/are, it's just this specific one we're unsure about. I mean, when I first saw this thread title my reaction was, "Yeah, we know that and what else is news?"

My own 2 cents...

I herniated L5-S1 a year and a half ago and walked into the Neurosurgeon's office (barely) with my sister who, several years before, had the same issue and was basically disabled by the surgery and said "what can you do for me that doesn't involve cutting?".

It took a loooong time. Prednisone and Vicodin were my best friends. Now I'm very aware of how I'm bending and what I'm lifting, etc, but the pain's gone. But it was over a year to be "back to normal". It don't happen quick-like.

Let me reinforce two truths that Becca just posted. First, good Ortho/Neuro folks don't want to go the surgical option until it is the last option. However, there are situations like mine where it IS the last option as I'd been through all the medical/therapy/exercise things that you could do.....and they had all quit working.

Keep in mind that upon occasion there is no surgical option either and you'er stuck with learning to live with the pain. While its true you need second opinions and you don't want to leap to surgery, if that is what fixes things its stupid as hell to rule it out.

I didn't want the surgery at first either but after years of slowly getting worse, my last attack never went away at all I was ready to kill to get it done.

Just don't be afraid to go for "chop-chop" if the the other guys say so.............Don't have it in your mind that these guys are all just dying to cut you open......they aren't. AND there are some surgical options that don't involve cutting. Many laminectomies are done with minimally invasive surgical techniques and you're out the next day with no pain. If a fusion is needed, that's another story.

Just relax. So......out of curiosity, have you ever had surgery of any sort? The way you keep goin' on I figger you fer a nooby.

Looky here, Bobert. Backaways I needed to get the inside of my right knee cleaned up -- I'd fallen and ripped the shit out of the meniscus (some of the cushioning stuff in there). The doc thought so, and the MRI said so. So I got 'er done. They went in using an incision one-half inch long (if you can't picture half an inch, it's about half the length of the middle joint of your right hand index finger). I was out cold from both the drugs and that open-down-the-back hospital gown. When I woke up I walked down to the car (they wanted to use a wheelchair but I said no), went home, dropped the ol' Vicodin, found out that I really, really fly on that stuff, and two days later I was back at work. Yeah, I had some PT and yeah, in the beginning it was painful. But my right knee is cool now and about as good as a 63 year old joint gets.

Now it's the turn of my left knee. So if the MRI shows that cuttin' is the best thing to do and a doc or two agree, they gonna cut me. I'll do all that shit that I did before, including the Vicodin, man.

The worst that can happen is that the docs agree that I need a knee replacement and I don't think that's gonna happen.

Well, I mean, I could die on the table, only it ain't all that likely. Anyway, you know what it says in Mark 13:33 and places like that. So if it's gotta be done, git 'er done. Matthew 14:27.

Well, Spawzer, you got me pegged...

Other than getting my tonsils out and 4 wisdom teeth pulled that's 'bout it... Okay, I did have to have a hole punched in my chest for a collapsed lung once... Other than a few broken bones which didn't need no cuttin' on that's the extent of it...

But I am resigned to do it if the 2nd doc says the same thing as the first one... I mean, yeah, let 'er rip...

If it were a knee it would be a lot easier but knowing that they gonna go in from the front of my neck is a tad scarier... There's lotta stuff in the front of yer neck... Like what if the guy is about to make the initial cut and sneezes??? You jknow, that kinda stuff...

Well, ol' Rap pissed away six years (minus a little over a year fer Uncle Sam) and got HISSELF a degree in English Literature and minors in Philosophy, Theology, and Drama.

Philosophy means lots of Existentialism, which is pretty damned depressing. Even Camus is depressing. I mean, "The point is to live." Come on, ya gotta do better than just live. Maybe he meant "The point is to live it up." Ol' Jean-Paul Sartre makin' tons of money, all of it pointless, but he kept on makin' it. Like a virtuoso banjo player: rakin' in the dough for doin' what? It taught me not be an Existentialist. Not even one like Heidigger or Buber, if they were. But it did make for great talk at parties over beer and stuff. Impressed the girls, too. "Ah, who knows what tomorrow shall bring? We could all be dead or even worse, graduated and have to go to work. Let's go in the bedroom and...."

At least Drama was pretty straightforward.

See, I bought into the whole existentialist bag myself andtried to mold what I read in Barth into something that coexisted seamlessly with Heidegger and Kierkegaard. But then I found myself asshole deep and wallowing about in "Either/Or"..........I mean I figured that anyone who wrote like that had to be a friggin' genius with his finger on the pulse of all life-force. After awhile I would find myself deep in thought, staring at my roommate's ant farm, and wishing I wasn't out of dope.

Then one day after failing to find the mix of Existential Philosophy and Theology as described by Paul Tillich I took my copy of "How to Talk Dirty and Influence People" to the can and took a healthy shit. Suddenly the essence (and of course Existentialism is all about essence) of all Existentialism was revealed by this great 20th Century Stand Up Philosopher!!! Fuck Kierkegaard..... I had Lenny Bruce. My essence finally preceded my existence. There it was in one simple line of English and I actually could understand it immediately without either dictionary or thesaurus.

"There is only what is; What should be never existed."

I ripped off a final fart and went out to meet the world in all of its absurdity. The only problem after that was what to do with the worthless ass degree so I opted to twist wrenches and go racing and have one helluva' good time. This is owed anyone who has read "Either/Or."

You get a really quick lesson in existence in the Infantry. It's and "either/or" thing -- either he's dead or you are. So when I came back to college after learning that shit I just wanted to finish and get on with life. Did that; went to -- Northern Illinois University! -- for a couple semesters of grad school, ran out of money, followed this chick to Ohio, married her (and am still married to her), took some courses at Kent State, finished grad school at Case Western Reserve, took about half another masters in writing at the U. of Akron, moved to Indiana (wife was now a lawyer and working at Notre Dame), moved to Northern Kentucky (or Cincinnati South), moved out here.

Yeah, I know Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, even Virginia and West Virginia. And DC and Maryland, too.

I just noticed: Kent State, NIU -- am I following massacres or something? Massacre Rocks State Park is just about 20 miles away (there weren't any massacre there, just the Shoshones ambushed some wagons and around 1930 somebody started calling it a massacre). Maybe it's me, huh?

Oh well shitfire......Lemmee give you something to really worry about then!

I went in for an odd pain in my back and was sent to te hospital where they admitted me and gave me "Versed" (pronounced ver-SAID), a relative of valium which is the drug of choice in most hospitals for short term pain relief. That's about the last thing I remember for the next week as I had exactly the opposite reaction to the drug. Instead of being calming and sleepy, I became wired up and even combative! My vital signs went all over the place and I was Life-Flighted to Columbus where they spent several hours getting my body under control, ending up putting me in a medically induced coma. I had an aortic dissection which stopped just shy of the heart and things were touch and go for a week or so. Go back to threads from April and May of 1999 and you can read all about it!

Now there's a lot more to the story, but that ought to be enough to make you blow a load in your pants and run off and hide in the woods. Go ahead and take a handful............LOL.............

BTW, you have some 2 inch valium? How the hell could you swallow it?

As said above, NOT before driving!

Your other combustibles are good for pain control and relaxation too.

I gave the nurse a dopey smile as she settled me in the car and said "Gee, I haven't felt this way since...since....."

Versed is HORRIBLE if you have a reaction to it. I have a reaction to it.

First time was for an outpatient surgery, an hour or so. I felt like I had a lead-weight hat on when I "woke." A friend was there to take me home; I slept for 24 hours straight through before I could manage to get up and move around. What a horrible hangover that was.

When they had wheeled me in for the first surgery I hadn't realize what they'd given me, and I'd awakened briefly as they were getting ready for the regular anaesthesia, and I asked why they didn't have the classical station on the radio, then I was out again. I foolishly mentioned this ten days later when the big surgery (hysterectomy for a clear margin) went down. "We'll take care of that," he said. Boy, did he. They kept me over a full extra day in the hospital they were so alarmed by how out of it I was. Took a couple of more days of sleep to wake up.

Next time I had surgery was a couple of years later, but in the interim I'd had an occasion to talk to a surgical nurse. She clued me in to the Versed. I researched it, they had used it, so I made sure my bunionectomy was free of Versed. My friend and daughter picked me up afterward and we all sat and talked and happily watched a movie that evening after dinner. What a world of difference! If you research the stuff you'll find a lot of unpleasant side effects, like memory loss, along with the hangover.

I went to the MRI place and they took my pants away. I was put on a big ol' table and this C-clamp like thing put around my left knee. It made sounds like a jackhammer only not as loud and then clicked and whirred and they moved me around some more. My leg was put into something that prevented it from moving around, things were put along side me to stop me from rolling around (and off the table), and I went to sleep. No drugs; I just took a nap for an hour or so and they were done.

I saw some pictures of my knee right away and I gotta say, I got some good lookin' knees! The tech said that she "didn't see anything that jumps out at me" but the pix will be reviewed by a radiologist and I go to see the Doc next Tuesday for the news.

They gave me my pants back before I left, too.

Well, right now I'm purdy steamed...

The danged "Spinr Clinic" in Winchester has had a CD with the MRI piccures since Wednesday at noon and the doc ain't "read" them yet, or if he has he ain't called... I've called 3 times since Wednesday, talked with various people who say they would leave a note for the doctor???

The American health care sytem is so screwed that we pay out 17% of ur GNP to wait, wait and wait...

The worst part about this is that I purdy much know that I've blown out a C-6 disc, I am in constant pain, I have allready decided that I want to have it fixed at UVA hospiatl but have to wait for the yahoos in Winchester to read the friggin' piccure and tell me what I allready know so that I can then get my primary doc to set me up for an appointment witrh the surgeon at UVA...

Grrrrrrrr!!!

Another week shot to pieces...

Meanwhile, I'm supposed to play at a festival the 1st week of May and I haven't played in 2 months now...

Grrrrrrrr!!!

Meanwhile, Part B, I'm land poor... I have over a half a million dollars worth of real estate on the market and am having to sell my prized '63 Karmann Ghia (to be listed on ebay later today) to pay the high deductibale ($2000) for all this crap...

Grrrrrrrr!!!

Other than that, it's a beautiful day and one of the locals is here taking down the last of 4 ugly metal feeders (35 feet high) and that will make the back of the farm look great...

BTW, I used to have another Ghia that was set up for autocrossing and I would maul the Vettes on shorter courses... The Porsche Club changed some rules the year after I went to Crew, Va. with the it a tore up most of their Porsches... Yeah, they said that the front axles were weak and no VeeDubs could play at their autocross events... I thnk what really pissed 'um off was that my Ghis was primer gray and ugly and they just didn't like getting beat by the hippie in the ugly VW...

BTW, for anyone interested, my Ghia will be on ebay by 9:00 tonight and be there for the next 10 days when the auction ends...

"Well, doc, why do I have 24/7 pain and tingling down my arm and in fingers???" to which he replied:

"I don't have all the tools to read the MRI..."

Huh??? What, does he need metric set of sockets, 'er what???

The P-Vine Googled the kid up and apparently he ain't been doc'in too long so next week (ahhhh, yes, yet another week) we're going to make an appontment with a real doctor, Dr. Chin, at UVA who has been 'round the block a few times...

When I was typing my reply I couldn't think of the word (synchro--how is that for a senior moment?). I have also resorted to that maneuver in my many years of standard transmissions. Trouble is that now most of the newer vehciles don't come with a standard nearly as robust as what the automatic can do. I have an 8 year old truck (Chevy Silverado) and when I was shopping I tried for another standard. The only one they had on the lot was a stripped down ugly monster and had no power and too many rough edges in the shifter. Maybe if I ever reach a stage where this one driver can afford to own more than one vehicle (and justify it to myself) then I'll find a car with a good standard.

True story:

When I was living in Ohio, a motorist reported to the Ohio State Patrol that there was a dead black bear on a certain state highway. Well, EVERYONE knew there were no black bears in Ohio, so the guy was laughed off.

Very, very annoyed he drove back, loaded the dead bear in his pickup, drove back to the OSP station and dumped the carcass in the parking lot. He then went in and told the cops and then went home.

The cops called the Fish & Game people, who assured them that it was, indeed, a dead black bear. F&G, however, did not remove dead animals.... It was July...and it took three days to find someone who would remove the dead bear from the copshop lot.

When I was much younger I was a van driver one summer for Curry's teh UK electrical retailer. I had to take a Bedford CF from Gravesend to Bromley. About 2 miles on my way the clutch stopped disengaging, so I happily carried on with clutchless changes - until I got to a set of road works. Single file traffic, lights went red, nowhere to go. Uphill. No chance the starter motor would get the van moving uphill in first, and not enough width to turn round and too much traffic to start in reverse and back down.

Nice summer day, phoned the maintenance people, sat on grass verge in sun (watching girls in summer dresses) until maintenance arrived and got paid for it!

Basically, you can shift without the clutch when the car reaches a certain rpm. This varies by car so you have to work at it.

Okay, here is how this is accomplised... There is this magic rpm range where the gear you are in and the gear you want to shift up to have good karma... Each car is different but if you kinda keep a little force on the gear shift in the direction of the next gear when that magic spot comes into play the shifter will effortlessly and smoothy go into the next gear but it's alot like making love to a gorilla.... Yer gonna have to do it on the gorilla's terms...

That's what I mean by that magic spot... On a VW I can do it without thinking... Even when the clutch is fine I frequently synco shift it anyway...

It's a lot like letting the force be with you...

Not too technical but accurate...

As fir a medical update: Health care in the US of A is great as long as you are super rich... Unfortunately, that ain't me...

The MRI came back in record time (6 days) and it says that I have some degenative stuff that probablu 25% of folks my age also have... No herniated discs...

So I ask the nurse who has called to report that what I do next to find where the pain and tingling ios coming from and she said, "Ahhhh, Bobz, I don't know..." so I says to her, "Have the real doc call me and he did this evenin' and that was like a joke...

"Ahhhh, Bobz, the report says yer fine"???

"No, doc... I ain't fine... I ain't been fine in pushin' 3 months now... That's why I come to you folks, ain't it"

I had to plead with the guy to send my MRI and records off to UVA where on Wednesday I'm gonna call and try to get an appointment with a Nurosergoen... Heck, I might have to plead with him, too...

Does Dick Cheney go thru this stuff???

Nevermind...

All I know is that I've been paying close to $1000 a month for health insurance for years and years, have barely used it and now it seems that the great US health care system couldn't give rat's ass if I'm in pain 24/7 or not... Oh sure they are perfectly willing to shove painkillers in me but fix the problem???

Nevermind...

I'm just a tad steamed tonight... Gig season is upon me and I can't even pick up a friggin' geetar...

Sounds pretty typical to me, Bobert. Doctors are quite often, it seems, at a loss in being able to tell you exactly why something like that is happening...or what can be done about it...but they can give you some drugs so you won't feel the pain for awhile.

The pain is your body telling you that something is wrong.

Now all this tells me is that doctors are...like the rest of us humans...neither omniscient nor omnipotent. But I knew that already.

Have you tried acupuncture yet?

If you DON'T have a herniated disc, you may be in real luck. It is possible all this suffering is from a pinched nerve. Get a real chiropractor who can use transdermal electro-stimulation, massage, and adjustment to (a) unpinch it (b)calm it down from spasming and (c) relax the muscles if this is the case. In other words, ya needs to do all three in a serious subluxation. I yam not a doctor of anything, but I know I've been through some big pain that resolved this way. If it IS herniated and the (*&*(_) doc just isn't finding it, that's another story.

Well, yeah, Amos... It is definately a pinched nerve... When a disc blows out that causes a pinched nerve... Otyher things can cause them, too, like imflamation and injuries and stuff that IO don't even know about...

I have not ruled out a chiroprator but I would like to zero in on where the nerve in pinched before doing something that might make matters even worse...

I hope to be talking with a neuro-ologist or sergeon this week to try to pin point where it is pinched... Once I know that then I'll explore the various trearment options...

But thanks... I'm trying to play smart here...

That IS the point, Bobert. Some 'pinches' can be treated easier than others. Mine was relatively easy, as the MRI showed the little bone spur that was rubbing the nerve and making my right arm hurt so bad I had to sleep with it on a pillow.
I STILL can't look at a helicopter over my left shoulder without numbness starting.

*IF* they can identify the precise point, Cortisone might help..or relatively minor surgery. But chiropractors could do more harm than good if they irritate it more.

Well, there's a little tear in the meniscus and a lot of fluid around the joint. This tells him that something is wrong.

He wants to give the cortisone which he injected last time more time to work. So I go back to see him on May 12, "but come earlier if you have to." He also gave me a prescription for T3 and said to do "gentle exercise." I asked him if this meant I had to cancel out of the bronc riding at the Rodeo (it starts today) and he said yes. Also bull riding, steer wrestling, roping, and even mutton busting is out.

My knee still hurts, dammit. And I'm using a walking stick to get around with. (I wanted a sword cane but my wife got all irrelevant on me.)

A clutch links the flywheel of the engine to the input shaft of the gearbox. In the gearbox are gears. In principle (this is not right in detail, just in principle) one set go round with the input shaft.
The appropriate one of those has to mesh with the appropriate one of the ones on teh output shaft - which is connected to teh propshaft which turns the diff that turns the rear wheels.

It's the same idea on front wheel drive or rear engine, but everything is sort of folded in on itself.

So WHATEVER speed the rear wheels are going round at, if the car is in first gear, the input shaft is going round faster than it would be if it was in second gear and so on.

So when you want to change down you ahve to speed the input shaft up and when you change up you wait for the input shaft to slow down. If those gears are not matched in speed when you try to slide them together you will get a nasty graunching noise.

If you disengage the clutch, then there is nothing but a bit of friction to control the speed of the input shaft.

Synchromesh provides that friction, and the sychromesh rings won't let you push the gears together until the speeds are matched (until they wear out).

If you have no syncromesh it's up to you to speed the input shaft up when changing down.

So, here you go. You are in top. Put your foot on the clutch. Move the gearlever into neutral (no gears touching each other). Now take your foot off the clutch. Now the engine controls the input shaft. Rev it up just right, till the speeds of the gears match, dp teh clutch again, and pop the lever into third and take your foot off the clutch again. That's double declutching.

You can do the same thing (whether the car has synchromesh or not) without using the clutch if you are careful and delicate. Rolling along in top, lift off the accelerator until the engine is not trying to make the car go faster, nor is it trying to slow it down. The gearlever will slip out of gear easily. Now the engine controls the input shaft. Rev it up just right, and because the gears will be going round at the same speed as each other, you can slip it (silently, you hope) into third.

Now practice until you can hear that difference right every time!

Changing up is a little different. You don't have to rev the engine up, just let it die away to the right moment.

Good news Bobert - both the playing for 10 minutes AND the promise to get to the Getaway.

Hey, ya' all... I read all the possible side effects and "combustion" ain't nowhere in there...

One thing I did leave out is that the doc said the3 nerve would heal at its oen rate but that using my arm, even though it hurts, won't change the length of time... I thought that kinda wierd but what the hell??? So I'm doing housework today... You know, pickin' up after the P-Vine... Grrrrrrr.... I feel a womenz thread comin' on...

Back to work...

It's under "spontaneous combustion" Bobert. It means that you'll suddenly burst into flame.

Well yeah, Rap, but it don't say that in the piece of paper... Says lotta other scarey stuff but nuthin' about blowing up 'er burstin' into flames... I mean, nuthin'... I read it 3 or 5 time and I ain't gonna burn up from these pills...

Plus it says to "take by mouth" right on the label... So that tell me that you ain't 'sposed to stick 'um, ahhhhhhhhhh, you know where... I'm kinda likin' 'um... They are gel caps with powder inside and I was wondering what it would be like to, ahhhhhh, dniff a little bit of the powder thru a rolled up one dollar bill...

Nevermind that last thought...

I've had a sore right shoulder for months now, Bobert. Not wretchedly painful like yours, though...just uncomfortable and not as flexible as it ought to be. It's slowly, slowly getting better. A little bit more stretch as time goes by. So I figure that time is probably what will cure your problem. I do some mild stretching and it seems to help.

Well, well, well...

Looks as if we have a priliminary diagnosis and it it...

...."Brachial plexopathy"....

Great....

A few things can bring this on and opne of them is the existence of a "tumor"... So today I enderwent yer another MRI, this time with dye injected into the ol' hillbilly.... It was s long MRI... Maybe an hour and a half long...

Recon I'll know somehtin' next week... If their ain't no tumor than it's gonna be a waitin' game... Could eb a week or a month or 6 months before it subsides... And it may not subside or it may subside partially... But in most cases it subsudes fully meaning that if I am in that category, I'll be leaduing the blues jam at the Getaway and foing...

...a mini concert....

Will keep everyone posted...

Brachiial plexopathy? I think it is Latin for {"Sore all over" or something.

WHat does that fancy handle say about the anture of the beast and its remedies, aside from "could be sompn serious or not"?

So he's singing loudly behind Amos the human juke-box of course.

Well gol danged...

Couple Iron City beers and them pills they got me on make fir some more than usaul interestin' Bobert readin'... Man, I should stay the heck away from this thing at night 'cause I come back the next day and don't have a clue what I said...

It does say right there on the pill bottle not to operate machinery so I guess that's what they mean...Even pudders is off limits... Also says that the side effects maybe greater if ya' drenk Iron Cities...

Like I was tryin' to say is that I should know this next week if there is any tumor activity and if there ain't then they are gonna keep me on these anit-seizuer meds that is supposed to help the neurons get reacquainted and that in most cases it it juts matter of time but in some cases folks don't get fully revovered...

All I know is that if I take me a handfull of pills and 6 Iron Cities that I can play geeter fir about 5 -10 minutes at night... Burnin' a little evidence don't hurt non either...

Yeah, and taking enough of them pills plus Iron City kin fix it so you don't play geeter every agin. In fact, you'll just lay there dressed up in yer Sunday best, a shit-eatin' grin on yer face, until they close the lid on ya and screw it down.

Be careful out there, ya hear? Cuz if you ain't, I'm gonna have to come out there and slap some sense into ya with a oak 2x4.

Ya. better bring yer own oak 2X4, Rap, 'cause unless you pay thru the nose all yer gonna find 'round these parts is pine...

Hey, Rap... Man, I need you to come down here and help me kill this danged groundhog... He has more lives than a cat... If I walk out back witout a gun there he is... If I have the gun, he ain't nowhere to be found...

Okay, 'cept night before last an' I was laying fir him... Yeah I had me a pill and took a couple Iron Cities out to the ferrowing barn that has a window out of it 'bout 75 'er 90 feet from Mr. G-Hog's den which is under my equipement barn... So he comes on out and immediately climbs up on top of some 6X6 blocks that I have styacked and behind them is a nice Warm Mornings porpane heater which I really don't wnat to shoot...

But I'm patient and agter about 20 minutes me gets down where I have a shot at him with the .410.... Click... Huh???? Hey, don't ask me... May be bolt wasn't down far enough to engage the firing pin for the lower chamber but Mr. G-Hog heard the click and now was headed back to the hole as I pull the bold up for the .22, recocked and got off a prayer shot (open sights) and missed the sumabich...

Maybe I'll get him tonight... Wow, it's about time for him to come out... Better go get set up....

Yeah, Im shooting lefty but that's good... I've always shot lefty???

Okay, Bobert, here's whatcha do.

Go down to the store and tell 'em you gotta blast some stumps. Just a coupla sticks of dynamite'll do; make sure you get a couple electrical blasting caps too.

Put one stick of dynamite and one cap away, maybe in the house, but at least a hunnerd yards away. Now put a point on a wooden dowel and poke a hole from the top of the stick of dynamite about a quarter way down the stick and drop in the cap, the wires gotta stick out the top. Tape the wires in place.

Twist some regular old copper wire onto the cap wires and tape it in place. Use a LOT of copper wire, now! Find that ol' 'hog's hole and using a long stick shove that capped stick of boom-boom way down in the hole.

Now walk as far away as the copper wire'll let ya. Touch one strand of wire to one pole of a car battery and the other to the other (clamp the wires to jumper cables if yer chicken). BOOM! No more Mr. Ground Hog AND you got the start for a nice fish pond!

Use the second stick and cap if you don't get him on the first try.

Jist remember what the man said, "The is no problem so large or so complicated that it cannot be solved with the correct amount of high explosives."

Bobert, I think you done run that groundhog off. Leastwise, that is the only explanation I have for the bold feller that I thought was a new neighborhood cat exploring my front porch this morning - leastwise, until I saw it's ugly mug. I figured he was good and lost, and most likely new to these parts.

(no kidding - I've never had one stroll up a 5 foot rise of steps and hang out on the front veranda before. Bold little b*stard.)

If he's actin' like that then he prolly all rabbied up... Smack him with a shovel a couple times and take his poor body off to the local landfill... That's what the P-Vine has threatened to do wid me if I don't get this tuff off me... She says it will be a mercy killin'... Heck, I still got one good arm... That G-hog is no good...

My G-hog ain't him, tho... I just looked out the window and the sumabich is eatin grass on the back of the farm... He knows I gotta an open sight 410/22 so he ain't the slightest bit worried... I'm gonna get him befoe the beets come up...He went theu a row of them last year... Okay, I ain't into the beet part but I love beet tops and that's what he loves, too... Gonna be his downfall 'cause I shoot lefty and next time he's in my sights he gona go to that big ol' beet row in the sky...

Sho nuff is...

I just got a TENS machine - I've got a knee that has hurt for years, every step I took, some days more, some times less, and it threw my balance off, made my hips ache and my back protest - half a dozen 15 minute sessions and it is not hurting most of the time.

It only cost me 15 pounds sterling - about 30 US dollars, - batteries not included. No one told me about these things - even after physiotherapy and painkillers failed. Then last week I called in at the pharmacy and saw one, got a rundown on what not to do with it, took one home and today I was even thinking of taking a walk, until the hailstones started to fall.

Maybe - perhaps? one of these could be of some help to you? Look it up on Google or Wiki it.

I do hope so, I feel that I have drawn a real live 'get out of jail' card.

Anne
