I wish I could like her singing - there's no question she has a wonderful voice, but she's yet to sing in any style I enjoy.

Mind, I'm not likely to hear her live, since her handlers have decided she's not to be exposed to the jeering reportage of Haligonia.

Interesting side note: the local paper, the Daily News, which printed a column which said handlers claimed decided them against Halifax, went (sadly - it was the only alternative to the Tory Herald) belly up t'other day.

Is there a conspiracy in the making Bee?
My wife is currently watching it but I'm doing better things like chatting to you folks and going to You Tube. I've been going to a lot of the old comedians. Damn they were good..

I have absolutely nothing against Celine. A terrific voice, a down to earth person and so on. But there is nothing about her that makes me want to look or see hear her sing. The media here also gets very negative toward her. Comments that are not warranted at all. I just don't get it.

Thanks Bruce. I read it all and can't help thinking how great she has done. Followed her dream. Great article. I dunno!, the Halifax thing probably were a bunch of assholes getting involved. I bet Celine would have loved to do the show.

I doubt there's much point being pissed at her, personally. The media buzz at the time said her husband is extremely protective of her, and any jokes at her expense are not seen as amusing. OTOH, there was also the rumour that she'd gotten better a venue offer in Montreal for the time booked for Halifax, and the local mild joking was used as an excuse to cancel.

mega-achiever, stratospheric success no doubt, but much too slick for me.....overdone for my tastes..

I'm happy for Claude Lemay, her band leader... we worked on a show together in the 70s for a month or so (Serge Locat from Harmonium).. we were all hungry but he was broker than the rest of us..... driving around on bald tires in the winter, bumming smokes..but always cheerful. His nickname was 'Mego' which, in French, means cigarette butt.. anyhow, when Sony got involved with her and cleared all her older musicians from her band, she was adamant about keeping Claude... needless to say, he doesn't have to bum much of anything anymore or be concerned about how much tread is on his tires....a good player, but I don't believe he records with her... it's a huge industry of formulated hooks and flash.. but it was nice to see that she needed Mego for the stage... Voyons donc ostie !

Am I the only one who doesn't "get" CD? I wouldn't cross the road to see her perform. Not to slag her, but one man's angel is another man's banshee from hell. But, it's a wonderful world when we can all have different tastes, ain't it!

Woah! I had a serious early teenage crush on McGoohan because of that series.

Mooh, there it is. No accounting for tastes; we are all attuned to different tunes.

I can at least understand why Celine is considered to have a marvellous voice, even though I don't enjoy her at all.

Similarly, I understand why people like John Prine. I can even sympathise generally with his material. But? Cannot stand listening to him sing.

Celine? Well, she's a very fine singer. I think people dislike her mainly just because she has been marketed so effectively (plus I must admit that the "Titanic" song does get rather annoying after awhile).

Now what about Shania Twain? A lovely woman. I personally knew a man who stalked her for years...he was gone right nuts over her...was convinced that she was secretly in love with him too...and he was finally charged over the matter and issued a strict court order to stay AWAY from Shania Twain. Poor lad, he had become totally unhinged, I'm afraid. He wasn't the type who was inclined to be harmful...merely an extreme nuisance to the object of his affection.

I detested Celine Dion for years but I actually think she is getting better with age. She seems to be acquiring some depth. Lets face it, she has worked very hard and has been at it a long time. As to her voice...

I think she sings like she has a head cold or something. She has a wonderful range but why does she sound as if her sinuses are full?

Also - lets not forget that she is 'pop'. She is akin to Barbara Streisand and I didn't like her much, either.

Well, as much as I diss Celine, c'mon now, I would like to have a tiny percent of her bank account. Simple thing... she is very talented. I think it has more to do with what LH said above. "... does get rather annoying after awhile...". And, I would add, over and over and over, for a long WHILE!

As for Shania Twang... well, I would have to hear her songs for a longer while before I would not want to even look at her. She is kinda cute, in a Northern Ontario kinda way. Even Shane wouldn't kick her outta bed fer eatin crackers. Er, ah, soda biscuits fer ye southerners.
