Subject: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Mrrzy Date: 20 Feb 08 - 08:02 PM Full Lunar Eclipse... And we've got clouds! How about you? It starts in about an hour here... so I guess that's everywhere, yes? Eclipses are planetary events? |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 20 Feb 08 - 08:13 PM "Eclipses are planetary events?" Yes, but the moon from my viewpoint is unfortunately hidden by the earth right now.... unless I dig a very deep hole... |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Jeri Date: 20 Feb 08 - 08:17 PM 10:26 Eastern Standard (Mudcat) Time. Thanks for the reminder. I'll bundle up and go outside later. A guy at the mall sold me a special pair of filter glasses to look at it safely so I wouldn't go blind. Can't wait to try them out! |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: number 6 Date: 20 Feb 08 - 08:25 PM Jeri .... it's a lunar eclipse ... no need for specially filtered glasses. Cloudless sky out here tonite ... with a beautiful view from our back upper deck .... will be getting some pretty good fotos of it tonite. biLL |

Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: catspaw49 Date: 20 Feb 08 - 08:31 PM I bought a real nice pair too Jeri......You're going to go blind Number Six. If not from the eclipse then from your uncontrolled wanking. You're really going to regret not having bought any special viewing lenses. I hope the rest have theirs like Jeri and I. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: catspaw49 Date: 20 Feb 08 - 08:50 PM Its okay Peace....Not too late! I bet there is a welding supply shop still open out there where you can get a lens out of a Welding Helmet! They work really well, just not too fancy. Call around, I bet there is someplace open. Hope they still have some available though................... Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Peace Date: 20 Feb 08 - 08:59 PM I'm gonna go watch. Will be back in a few minutes. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Little Hawk Date: 20 Feb 08 - 09:01 PM I've been out there taking photos of the moon...but I don't think this camera is up to the challenge...or else it's my inexperience. Or both. Oh, well...having fun anyway. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Jeri Date: 20 Feb 08 - 09:01 PM You guys are funny - I honestly couldn't type I was laughing so hard. Hey, I was gonna take some pictures but I forgot to buy film for my digital camera, and... OK, I'll stop. I can look out the window in this room and see a moon with a big old bite out of it already. I wish I COULD take a photo. |

Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Little Hawk Date: 20 Feb 08 - 09:09 PM Finally you're making some sense! |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Jeri Date: 20 Feb 08 - 09:13 PM Bruce, you spelled 'SHIT' wrong. I hear it's supposed to get red when the whole thing's in shadow. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Little Hawk Date: 20 Feb 08 - 09:19 PM Yeah, sort of a muted reddish color. It's about halfway gone now. Unfortuately the sky has been clouding over, but it's still visible in the breaks between the passing clouds. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: GUEST,Guest Date: 20 Feb 08 - 09:20 PM Gorgeous view from our east balcony, clear as a bell--cold as fuck here, BTW (current 10 below wind chill, temp around zero). But we've got the high def camera rollin' away outside. About halfway there right now. I might drag out the Sony and get a few snapshots too. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: GUEST,Guest Date: 20 Feb 08 - 09:35 PM And those bright dots are Saturn and Regulus, for those of you with a clear view. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: GUEST,Guest Date: 20 Feb 08 - 09:48 PM And the camera just froze up. However, the eclipse continues to go well with the chianti and aged gouda inside. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 20 Feb 08 - 09:50 PM It's almost there, looks good, a little overcast but the moon shows through. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Jeri Date: 20 Feb 08 - 10:05 PM Not a cloud in sight here, and frigid, brittle cold. The moon's color is similar to someone holding a flashlight up to a paper bag. That's not very romantic, but it's how it looks to me, and it's gorgeous. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Jim Krause Date: 20 Feb 08 - 10:07 PM Cloudy. Threatening snow. Nuts! Jim K. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: GUEST,Guest Date: 20 Feb 08 - 10:19 PM In full swing, cold & crystal clear here. Color is dark grey, starting to look a bit orange. We've added Trader Joe's chocolate truffles to the chianti & gouda menu. Things are going damn strong here! Saturn and Regulus framing the eclipse is just astoundingly gorgeous. And we are listening to Loreena McKennit as the soundtrack. A lovely, lovely night. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: GUEST,Guest Date: 20 Feb 08 - 10:23 PM And I love that the next viewable total lunar eclipse here will be at the winter solstice, 2010. Cara Dillon singing about the dark night here, with The Maid of Culmore. Stunning. |

Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Janie Date: 20 Feb 08 - 10:36 PM The clouds played cat-and-mouse here for awhile, but I have watched most of it. Right now, the sky is completely clear, the moon is reddish, the supporting cast of planets are doing their jobs, and it is quite lovely. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: GUEST,Guest Date: 20 Feb 08 - 10:42 PM Now I'm watching it from my St Paul balcony, with my daughter in North Carolina on hers. The big, blue planet is a wondrous place. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Amos Date: 20 Feb 08 - 11:00 PM We caught a glimpse among the scudding clouds. I thought of my ancient forebears who were frightened of the wrath of the gods when they saw that shadow. Now, it's just flying rocks dancing among well-charted spaces. Big improvement. A |

Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 21 Feb 08 - 12:39 AM This is with a camera, not a telescope so it isn't as crisp. And it was slightly hazy. But it was nice to see what this digital could do with a tripod help. Set on time exposure. SRS |

Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: SINSULL Date: 21 Feb 08 - 11:43 AM Really freaky. My back yard was lit up by moonlight on the snow then went very very dark. Orange moon added to the effect. Spectacular show. |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: Amos Date: 21 Feb 08 - 11:48 AM Bill, if you went blind after you took that picture, it was because of what you were doing before you went outside, man. SOrry to break it to you. Still, a beautiful picture but why is your moon a different color than mine was? The moon I saw eclipsing was a vivid white and cream sort of hue. A |
Subject: RE: BS: Eclipse tonight... From: number 6 Date: 21 Feb 08 - 12:22 PM Amos ... thanks for the comment. That particular photo was shot with settings set at a slight underexposre. The begining phases of the eclipse I shot with the exposure set dead on and at a lower shutter speed. These shots do display a vivid white and with more of that cream coloured hue. The temperature here in N.B. was a around -11c last nite. This frigid condition caused my camera to freeze up, which resulted in some frustration in getting the setting to function correctly. As to the cause of my blindness ... all I can say is I should have listened to the priest. :) biLL |
