Hi! I'll be spending some time - week 10, the first week of March in fact - in Limerick Town and Ennis.
Any special "must hear/see"s 'round there then by chance? I mean touristwise as well - it's skiing holiday here in Finland ;-)...

Dolans bar by the docks area of town... Get taxi there and back (don't walk alone in this area)... great session and music venue.

Also contact the college as there's a great trad music course there they might know of sessions too.

Also, King John's Castle is a must, and a nice town walk around that area and Treaty Stone. Bunratty Castle and park - kind of park filled with old style Irish houses - interesting place. Just outside Limerick.

Just walking around the city is good fun too - though watch out for ponys and traps as a few people dash about town in racing traps on the roads... so look out!

Have fun

Regards

EWIS

Too early this time, but another time in summer you must travel down to Ballybunion to see the restored bit of what must be the world's oddest railway.

Don't know if it'll help, but I've got to ask...

The last time I was in Ennis (1990) we stumbled into a grand session at a pub called The Poet's Corner. Is it still there? Good place to check out if it is.

Flying into Shannon Airport, I presume?

If you're going up into Clare as far as Ennis, you might consider going just a little farther north and east to the Doolin/Lisdoonvarna area. Opinions differ as to the quality of the music scene in Doolin ~ it developed such a reputation that some contend that the pubs there are now overrun by tourists and the real players have left. But from a pure tourist's point of view, irrespective of the music, a drive across the Burrens and a look at the Cliffs of Moher are definitely worth the effort.

Ennis is a nice, old fashioned town with plenty of excellent music - nearly as good as Miltown Malbay, but not quite.
Number of places in Clare worth a visit - Cregganaun, Ennis Friary, Quinn Abbey, and, if the weather is good The Burren.

Quin Abbey is only open from June to September.

The Craggaunowen Project is not open until mid-April.

Ennis Friary is not open until April.

In fact just about the only Clare sights open in the first week of March are the blasted Cliffs of Moher Centre (avoid, though its impossible to avoid the ludicrous car parking charge), Aillwee Cave and the horrible Bunratty Castle. Of course, The Burren's always open and should be the highlight of any trip to Clare.

Ignore Doolin - even more horrible this year than last and that's saying something.

The Micho Russell Festival is on in Doolin this week-end. Micho was a local musician and one of the family who put Doolin on the map (Musically at least). He was killed in a car crash at this time of year about 15 years ago. I visited Doolin for the frist time in many years last week and couldn't get over the amount of new building that has gone on there in recent years. A lot of the rural charm of the place seems to have been lost, but it is probably good for the local tourist economy. Anywayu its worth going there this week-end. Always plenty of good music in Ennis - just follow yhour ears.

Kilfarboy (now were have I heard that name before/)
Didn't know about the seasonal closures - sorry; used to be open most of the year.
A tip about The Cliffs.
As long as you don't wish to see the display centre, call after closing time (6pm?) and avoid the horrendous parking charges - well worth the visit.

Allright then, back again among them snowy forests (err, to be honest it rained all day here...)!

Thanks all ye, for those kind recommendations - didn't avoid Limerick in the end though ;-). Sat down at Dolan's (twice) and Nancy's (Denmark Str) there, Cruise's, Maroney's and Old Ground Hotel (among others) in Ennis, visited briefly the Cliffs and the Burren and walked a lot with Herself, who betheway was rather pleased with her first visit to the Green.
