Just chatting with friends here when the whole house shook for me and another UK chatter.
Anyone else in the UK felt this?
any news of minor earthquakes hereabouts?

Thanks for the link Alics - the one I had for BGS ceased responding while I was looking at it!

The building shook here. When I went outside all the birds in the hedge were very agitated; so were the dogs in the village (and one or two car alarms!). I don't think anything actually moved greatly or fell over (or nothing I've found yet).

Once...many years ago, I got to use that line. *grin*

A lady friend had spent the night with me...and next morning, the paper mentioned a quite minor..and rare...quake..had been measured in the area.
Then, I just happened to be in a store and found a funny card with a little cartoon bulldozer chugging along, saying "did the earth move for you?"
I cut the article out of the paper, pasted it into the card with some note like "I gave it a 7.2" and mailed it. It was quite a hit.

You folks shaken but not stirred out there?

Hi
We live in Market Rasen about 18 miles North of Lincoln.
We live 50 yards from a railway line that has heavy oil tank trains going backwards and forwards from Immingham (about another 15 miles North East of Lincoln near to Grimsby). These trains are very heavy and cause the house to tremour slightly.
I was woken up at 1 approx tremour lasted at least 10 seconds and the tremour seemed like a train had come off the rails. The house was really shaking. I was waiting for the train to stop (so I thought). I looked through the window but saw nothing.
My one daughter woke up and we concluded it must have been an earthquake.
Scary. I have only just calmed down 2 o'clock..
Cheers
Les Worrall

Yep Sky have just confirmed Market Rasen as the epicenter.

Went to see Fairport in Cleethorpes last night. They must have caused it :-)

I worked out on some Lat and long references given on an earthquake site 53.321°N, 0.314°W....and got to about Tescos in Waltham, near Grimsby :-) but it is late so I maybe got it wrong and I wasn't being very accurate.
It sounded very loud and seeing the whole room moving was very frightening...am hoping that no one is hurt and it is 'just' tremors...made me realise even more how terrifying it must be when a 'proper' earthquake takes place.

I bet it was just Eddie Whatnoll again. Olive had gone out shopping, then the remote failed, and he HAD to change the channel to catch the darts championship...so he got up off the couch after a great struggle and a lot of cursing and complaining, took a step or two, tripped, and you know the rest...

They say the tremors were even felt in Ireland.

I worked out on some Lat and long references given on an earthquake site 53.321°N, 0.314°W....and got to about Tescos in Waltham, near Grimsby :-)

Where you went wrong, Helen, was confusing the decimal parts of the degree with minutes and seconds:
53.321o = 53o 19' 17.04"
0.314o   = 18' 48.96"
Tesco is close to 53o 32' N, 31' W but that is not where it took place. It was at 53o 19' 17.04" N, 18' 48.96" W (= 53.321oN, 0.314oW), i.e. just South of Market Rasen

Remind me not to ask you to do any map reading for me ;-)

We have a large willow tree leaning out into the main road and have been getting quotes to have it cut down. We were woken up by the tremor thinking that maybe the tree had decided to fall before it was pushed.

woke me up here in Stroud.

It happened within the last year too. Though less fierce.

Having lived in NZ I maybe am more attuned to it. There you need to react so waking-up is essential.

It was a good old shake near Grantham - I woke up, but my daughter slept through it. Lasted about 10 seconds, and it was proper scary. It's the worst one I've felt in the UK - I think they're much more frightening in the night than when they occur in the day.

It woke me up.

The end of the bed nearest the outside wall was shaking and the TV was rattling on it's brackets which are (still, I'm glad to say) attached to said outside wall.

Thought at first it was an HGV illegally rumbling along our residential road, but heard no vehicle engine noise so I realised it must be an earthquake.

I'm living less than 15 miles North of central London (2 hours drive from Gainsborough) so if it was powerful enough to wake me I'm not surprised people in Kent also felt the tremor.

Yep, we got a good sheckin' in Gainsborough, Capital of The Backwoods (15 miles from t'epicentre). Apparently quite a few houses damaged in the town (according to SkyTV) - chimblies down etc., but fortunately no-one hurt.

Sounded like a 747 flyin' in through the bedroom window, mirror fell off the dressing table, we nearly shat the bed.

It all 'appens in the Backwoods, good job we're Real Men up here, not like them Sathern Paffs. :-) :-)

Kettering, Northants, about 1 am this morning. Every radiator in the house rattled, and the bed shook. I sat up and asked (of no one in particular) 'What's going on ?'

The cats came in and dived under our quilt.

My beloved slept through it.

When I told her, first thing, she only half-beleived me, until it was broadcast on Radio 4.

There have been a number of reports in our local rag over the past year or so, of bangs, rumbles and earth-tremors in the Market Rasen area, and these have been attributed to the weapons-testing establishment on Faldingworth Airfield - a charge which the establishment have strenuously denied.

Wonder if it was, in fact, Mother Earth limbering up for The Big One last night??

Neither shaken, nor stirred, in South Bucks. But Nessie said she felt it, though it did not stop her from going back to sleep, being hardened from 11 years in Greece to anything below 6.8.

Still, a 5.2 is not peanuts, and as it was shallow (10km below the surface, I think I read somewhere), it would have felt "bigger than its size" as it were.

On the news this morning it showed Trinity Street in Gainsborough...with shop windows boarded up....although there was no reference to the windows having been damaged in the quake..the implication was there just by showing them. Those windows have been boarded up for many weeks...months even.
