Jimmy,
You were an aspiring guitarist at 17 and I was 15 - memories of fun, the "Moulin Rouge", "The Five" and the innocence of it all.   Our lives went in different directions, our paths never to cross again.

Your dream and what a dream, you made it happen.   Your special quality can not be replaced.

For your family and friends, I pray that the pain of their loss be soon replaced with happy memories.

Rest In Peace old Friend.

Jimmy Faulkner was an accomplished folk, jazz and blues guitarist and emerged on the scene at a time when the different genres fitted fairly comfortably beside one another in Ireland. I have a tribute site to Jimmy at http://www.iol.ie/~ronolan/index.html

I also have a profile there of 'Galway' Joe Dolan, founder member of Sweeney's Men, musician, songwriter and artist, who died on January 7 last.

Jimmy,

I played bass with you in the Medium Wave Band (with Red Peters and Honor Heffernan) in 1974. Your colourful and warm guitar playing at that time will always be in my memory. You were one of the great Irish guitarists of all time and will be sadly missed by me.

Rest in peace Jimmy!

Jimmy played with a freedom and a beauty that I've never seen in another guitarist. His fingers danced on the fretboard like a ballet dancer. What a loss. Rest In Peace Jimmy.

Murray,

I hope this link works for you.

If not try searching for "Busted Loose 1981" on youtube and this should find the clip.

Seán,

Nice clip.

You can see (slightly) more of Jimmy in this clip here on youtube.

As far as I remember this was Paul Brady's first 'electric' band in his "post folk" era, put togrther to tour the "Hard Station" album. The line-up was fairly short lived.

I'm not sure what age Jimmy was, but I think his fifties sounds right.

Ah, more bad news. I expect he was young enough - only in his 50s ?

Here is a song from TG4's great archive show, Siar an Bóthar originally broadcast in 1979 on the show Aisling Gheal.
Jimmy plays slide guitar - but we only get to hear him - just very brief glimpse of his hand and guitar at the end :

Christy Moore / Jimmy Faulkner - Galtee Mountain Boy

Lovely rendition and playing. Peace to him.

Sorry I'm a bit scattered at the moment.

I should also have mentioned Jimmy's grat work with Kieran Halpin. They made a CD togehter called Acoustic which is one of my personal favouriute contemporary folk albums.

I think Jimmy also palyed on Christy's classic albums "Whatever Tickles your Fancy" and "The Iron behind the Velvet". I'm fairly sure it was Jimmy who provided the brilliant slide guitar on "The Sun is Burning" on the latter album.

Jimmy was without doubt one of the greatest guitar players I ever heard.

I first came acrtoss him when he was effectively the 'house guitarist' in the Meeting Place in Dorset Street in Dublin in the late 70s and early 80s. He could play in virtually any style and was a great traditional, folk, slide, blues, rock and Jazz guitarist. He sat in with and recorded with many of the great names of the Irish music scene. Off the top of my head I can think of Christy Moore and Donal Lunny (Live in Dublin LP), Paul Brady, Freddie White, Red Peters Blues Band, Mairtin O Connor & Gary O Briain and hundreds of others.

He was lead guitarist with the tragically short lived Hot Club Jazz outfit Hot Club which came to an abrupt end with the tragic death of Jimmy's long time collaborator bass player Declan McNeilis. It is a shame that Jimmy never got the level of fame and recognition that his talnt deserved. Jimmy will be sadly missed by music fans throughout Dublin and the rest of Ireland. Can I re-echo sympathy to Jimmy's family.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
