Subject: BS: British Storms From: Cats Date: 10 Mar 08 - 01:50 PM My brother phoned me at 7.30 this morning to ask if we were OK because of the violent storms hitting the UK overnight last night and all through today. Apart from the standing water and an interestingly blowy drive down the A30 across the moors, I'm OK. We have electricity, dinner is in the oven and I'm safe. Just because the Tamar Bridge is closed and the Torpoint Ferry isn't running and that means Cornwall is cut off, except for the odd smaller roads, roofs are off houses, most sea side towns and villages are under water, trees are down [goody free firewood!]and roads blocked etc etc etc.... How has everyone else fared? Hope you are all safe. |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Mrrzy Date: 10 Mar 08 - 02:20 PM Good to hear! And Ohio gets 20 inches of snow in one day - everybody there OK? |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: SINSULL Date: 10 Mar 08 - 03:01 PM UH OH Where's Micca????? |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Little Robyn Date: 10 Mar 08 - 03:04 PM Pleased to hear that Kathy. Does that mean you can take tomorrow off work? I trust Padstow is safe but I wouldn't like to be up Crugmeer right now. I can't imagine how my forebears would have dealt with that sort of weather. Maybe that's why they came to NZ??? We're about to have a 28 degree day (that's C, not F) and the sky is clear here in Hawke's Bay. Summer hasn't ended just yet. Cheers, Robyn |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Richard Bridge Date: 10 Mar 08 - 03:23 PM A power line came down and I was without electricity for 12 hours. That's North Kent. |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Cats Date: 10 Mar 08 - 03:37 PM No chance in being off school. We didn't even close when Bodmin was cut off due to the snow a couple of years back. The North Cornish Coast is due to get badly hit tonight. |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Peace Date: 10 Mar 08 - 03:38 PM There is a British storm on the Thatcher thread. FYI. |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: nutty Date: 10 Mar 08 - 04:26 PM Some wind and rain this morning - unpleasant but not major - then a wonderfully warm and sunny afternoon. And this is the North East Coast. |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Big Al Whittle Date: 10 Mar 08 - 04:30 PM Nothing remarkable even here in Nottingham. bit of rain, not much wind. |

Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Micca Date: 10 Mar 08 - 06:31 PM I am OK!!! the wind and rain on my way to work was Very cold I put gloves on, and anyone will tell you it has to be real co;d for that. It took me about 20 mins to warm up from frozen once I got there!1 |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Arnie Date: 10 Mar 08 - 06:39 PM Well down here in S.Kent, Dover harbour has been closed all day with a Force 10 gale in the Channel. Hundreds of lorries queuing on the M20 in what is called Operation Stack. Europe has been cut off! |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Liz the Squeak Date: 10 Mar 08 - 07:11 PM We had some pretty high wind here this evening but that was almost entirely due to Manitas's bum. It got a bit breezy and I did go and put socks on this afternoon... some interesting rain splatter in the wheelie bin as I put the rubbish out, but not that bad really. Micca is exaggerating. It's really cold here if I put socks AND shoes on indoors. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 10 Mar 08 - 07:20 PM A gusty sort of day. I'm quite glad I live inland. |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: SussexCarole Date: 10 Mar 08 - 10:01 PM Living at the tip of the Gower penninsular - South West Wales - 7am this morning the birds were singing. Gales? Not here |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Gervase Date: 11 Mar 08 - 04:10 AM Here in West Wales we had a bit of a blow - lost part of the roof of the pig house and the chicken run, but not as bad as the Met Office had predicted. Bloody wet though, and not much fun working outdoors. |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Morticia Date: 11 Mar 08 - 04:14 AM Lots of bits of trees down in Wiltshire, you have to pay attention driving and one road out of Marlborough had two trees down, aside from that, cold and wet like any other March really. |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: MartinRyan Date: 11 Mar 08 - 04:24 AM Here in the West of Ireland, it's been pretty wild alright. About 4 a.m. on Monday morning, we were woken by a tremendous crash. I ended up wandering around the house inside and out looking for damage. Couldn't find anything anywhaere! On my way back to bed, I headed into the en-suite bathroom for a leak. There, on the floor of the shower cubicle, sat the remains of a suction-pad shelf unit which had fallen about 5 feet, complete with an array of shampoo bottles etc! Mystery solved! Nothing to do with the wind. Regards |

Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: GUEST,LTS pretending to work Date: 11 Mar 08 - 05:11 AM Anyone checked in with the Sussex Seaford inhabitants yet? The picture in the paper today showed their lighthouse getting a bit of a battering. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: rock chick Date: 11 Mar 08 - 05:49 AM I traveled from the South of England back up to my home in Scotland, there was a little delay on the Trains going into London otherwise I was lucky with a trouble free train journey. Think the worst of it was the South coast and the West of England. I have to say I was expecting a nightmare of a journey but was just very lucky. Shelagh |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 11 Mar 08 - 07:06 AM On TV I saw swans paddling up a main street - didn't say which coastside town though... :-) BTW Adelaide has had over a week of temps above 35 deg C - longest heat wave since records started in 1880 - at least another 5 days expected - and no rain for a few weeks too... |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: SINSULL Date: 11 Mar 08 - 08:13 AM Geez Skarpi. Gale winds, earthquakes, volcanoes...makes our 20th snow storm look like nothing. |

Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 11 Mar 08 - 09:47 AM Surely it's only a real storm or 'severe weather event' if it affects London or the South East? |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: billybob Date: 11 Mar 08 - 10:49 AM we had no electricity for 4 hours, rough seas and the Port of Felixstowe was shut all day. They closed the Queen Elizabeth bridge at Dartford because of high winds, also the bridge over the Orwell for the same reason, which caused mayhem in Ipswich as all the traffic had to go through the town. But today beautiful sunshine and blue skies here in Frinton on Sea, may go for a walk on the beach after work.crazy weather! |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Penny S. Date: 11 Mar 08 - 04:00 PM Thames Bridge shut am. Branch off ash tree in garden. Wheelie bin over. Very short passages of strong wind. Mostly calm and sunny yesterday. But we weren't forecast for it being bad, anyway. Penny |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: ard mhacha Date: 11 Mar 08 - 06:00 PM Yeterday was beautiful here in north-east Ireland, a wee bit of a blow to-day and the odd shower, we are promised 80mph winds to-night. |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Liz the Squeak Date: 11 Mar 08 - 06:50 PM "Very short passages of strong wind." Yep, that was our front room last night... all due to Manitas and his bum. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Cats Date: 11 Mar 08 - 07:17 PM The North Cornish coast was very badly hit last night. In Bude the lock gate was torn off its hinges, near Newquay an 18foot boat was torn from its moorings which were the railings on the harbourside.. it took the railings and part of the harbour wall with it. In Flushing the swans were swimmimng down the high street. Driving across the moors tonight it was very wild again. Hope it's quieter tomorrow. I'm flying off to a seafront hotel in Eastbourne! |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: GUEST,LTS pretending to work Date: 12 Mar 08 - 09:13 AM Anyone lost a big green garden parasol? It was in our pond this morning. LTS |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Splott Man Date: 12 Mar 08 - 09:34 AM That's mine (south Wales) But I gained some felt off a shed roof. Anyone in West Wales claim that? |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Stu Date: 12 Mar 08 - 09:38 AM Of course, the fact we have had 80mph storms here in the North of England in the past 24 hours doesn't warrant the same 24/7 coverage of them Southern Jessies having to go out in a bit of a stiff breeze. |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Mr Red Date: 12 Mar 08 - 07:44 PM Let the news fill it's hours with the subject. It won't make the public relate the unsettled weather over the last few decades to anything "global" &/or warming. Globe hotter, seas hotter, evaporation greater, wet air fuels cyclones and wet air dumps on land as it is pushed up the Pennines (eg). Average rainfall not that much differrent but deluges more common. It is not rocket science. Only the maths is that complex. We are going to get more of same, we won't do anything to lessen it. But only the blind refuse to prepare for it. |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: GUEST,Dazbo AT WORK Date: 13 Mar 08 - 07:33 AM So we've only had storms since global warming? |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 13 Mar 08 - 07:42 AM The storms will be more violent. As the system heats up globally, turbulence increases (more violent storms - same amount of rain). |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: Mr Happy Date: 13 Mar 08 - 07:55 AM Anyone have the long range forecast for Easter? |
Subject: RE: BS: British Storms From: SINSULL Date: 13 Mar 08 - 08:08 AM All this reminds me of "I Know Where I'm Going". Count the beams in the ceiling and wish for a strong wind to carry away the fog. The last time I saw it was with Caroline Paton in an upstairs bedroom in their Sharon home while the menfolk watched the World Series downstairs. Kendall joined us for the scene at the whirlpool and proceeded to tell us all the technical flaws - we threw him out. Definite chick flick... |
