Sadly no research mentioned on bodhran players...

'Drummers are natural intellectuals'

By Gary Cleland
Last Updated: 1:26am BST 17/04/2008

Drummers are better known for their beats than their brain power, but research has suggested that they might actually be natural intellectuals.

Scientists who asked volunteers to keep time with a drumstick before taking intelligence tests discovered that those with the best sense of rhythm also scored highest in the mental assessments.

Born smart? The late Keith Moon, drummer with The Who, could have had natural intellect

Prof Frederic Ullen, from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, concluded that there was a link between intelligence, good timing and the part of the brain used for problem-solving.

He said: "The rhythmic accuracy in brain activity that is observed when a person maintains a steady beat is also important to the problem-solving capacities measured with the intelligence tests."

For the study, Prof Ullen and Guy Madison, from Sweden's Umea University, asked 34 right-handed men aged between 19 and 49 to tap a drumstick at a variety of different intervals.

They were then given a psychometric test of 60 questions and problems.

Prof Ullen said: "We found that people with high general intelligence were also more stable on a very simple timing task.

"We also found that these participants had larger volumes of the white matter in the brain, which contains connections between brain regions."

Scans of the brain have shown that it uses a wide distribution of areas to listen to music.

The left side tends to process rhythm and pitch and the right looks after timbre and melody.

those with the best sense of rhythm also scored highest in the mental assessments.

Neither of those attributes apply to most of the drummers I know, Shang.;>)

You even spelled "intilektals" wrong. There's no "c" and no "u".

But the test measured only a very simplistic "aptitude for drumming."

Observations in my local market indicate many who try without being particularly suited to the occupation.

(Sort of like some college professors in certain fields that shall remain un-named.)

There is a very intelligent man in Juneau who is adept at making things out of other things - as they say, give him a piece of metal and he can make anything. He is not socially adept and he sometimes says things that make one gasp but the man is smart.

He is a drummer and he can't hold a beat for nuttin'.

The same tested 49 were tried & tested in a privous test given to players of brass.

It was found that they were all intellegant enough but not a one could blow their own,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, nose.

I don't think this proves much but testing has some uses.

My son is a drummer and he can hold a beat well.....and he is also smart. People who know more about music than I do say so, so it must be true!

His next gig is on the new Cunard ship Queen Victoria, he flies out on Sunday. We won't see him again until the end of August - I always seem to be saying goodbye to my kids!

Cheers

Sexual in you end, O Sorcha? Did you realise that 'bodhran' is an anagram of 'hard nob'?

It's also an anagram of "hab rodn" and "hand rob" and "band hob" and...and...nevermind. I'm okay now.

There's no such thing as "hab rodn", unless you are speaking a Creole dialect through a head cold, good Rapaire.

Anyone who chooses an instrument that takes that long to tear down, pack up, transport, and set up has to have their intelligence questioned. I believe these are the same people who in baseball become catchers.

I guess the reverse corollary would be that those with the worst timing and sense of rhythm are the least intelligent.

I'm not going to say anything about banjo or accordion players, but you are free to draw your own conclusions.

They think that if they have "lots of stuff to do" they'll attract their own groupies instead of having to share the band bunch?

"Ole Pat was plain, and sexual.
He weren't no inteleckshual.
He liked to call out things obscene
At people on the movie screen..."

It seems natural to assume that a refined sense of timing enables other intelligent acts of discrimination and analysis to occur.

But I am not sure this has anything per se to do with drumming, which is sometimes a barbaric pastime.

I know a few drummers that I would invite into my home complete with drumset. One is a local schooldteacher (with good politics!) who has such an intuitive touch with the sticks and brushes that I've never heard him be inappropriate.

Speaking of packing up and transporting- one time I was passing his home when he was loading the stuff into his vehicle, and made a remark. He responded, In my next life I'm going to take up the harmonica.

Don't use the "b" word, Amos. "Archaic pastime" is more pc. You may get some nasty comments from Barbarians by implying that they tend to be drummers.

At leat the other had have had time to buy the beers for when you have finished.

However that is not the case with a bodhran...
