Subject: BS: Rebuild library, please donate books
From: Alice
Date: 26 Apr 08 - 11:19 PM

from fincenMIB on you tube,
the Mojave County's library was shut down by the FLDS leader, Warren Jeffs, because he did not want the "outside" world in Mojave county, at Colorado City, AZ. A Friends of the Library group was recently formed and a building donated to create a library.

The You Tube video explains the developments this week.
They need donations of hardbound books, preferably new, shelves, and $ donations near Colorado City, AZ, to establish a public library.

Associated Press covered the local meeting of the Friends of the Library petitioning the county for a library. Watch for more contact info to come. Here is the link to the video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OMjpvCRxV4

---quote------
"Warren Jeffs Banned Books, but A New Day Dawns
On April 24th, 2008, a Friends of the Library was formed in Colorado city, AZ. The next step is to petition Mohave County for a satelite Branch library. Moving from the 19th century, to the 21st century Colorado City is changing! But you can help! They need newer hardback books, book shelves and $ donations. THIS IS HISTORY IN THE MAKING!"

Here's the address for donations:

Colorado City Public Library
C/O Stefanie Colgrove
PO Box 1935
Colorado City, AZ 86021

donations of money orders to Colorado City Library or hard bound books, send to above address. I think you could also send books on tape and CD's and DVD VHS movies, especially anything you have on science, documentaries, history, etc. They have been very isolated from information and the education was only the religous education of Warren Jeffs doctrine.

More info for donations:

If donations are made out to The HOPE Organization, then they will be tax-deductible. And, if donors put "CC library" on the check, then we will know they want the money spent there. If they want, they can go on any of the main pages on HOPE's web site and scroll to the bottom and donate via PayPal. We just need them to put a note in the donation text box that it is for the CC library. Otherwise, we will think that it is just a generic donation not specified for any particular fund.

www.childbrides.org
The HOPE Organization

The HOPE Organization is a non-profit group dedicated to assisting survivors of abuse within polygamous relationships
on their courageous journey to personal freedom.

We are a St. George, Utah based 501(c)(3) charity providing assistance to individuals and families to safely transition from a polygamous lifestyle into mainstream society.

HOPE's purpose is to offer support, protection, assistance, choices, opportunities and hope for the women and young adults (both males and females) who have been kicked out or have chosen to leave this culture.   Sadly, too many women and children live under immense control and oppression and are caught in the cycle of abuse without a choice or a voice . . . We want to empower them!

Thanks for posting this.

Good for them. It's nice to see women with their hair down, in slacks and looking very individualistic!

Melissa, it said they need hardbacks, esp. AND newer books.

iT's rather chilling to look at the old library listing HERE with "Closed in 2004" and the now-familiar last names of "Barlow" and "Jessup" "Jessop" on the board and group chairman.

yeah, Kat...but hardback/newer is kind of vague.

I'll sort through a huge stack of books to send some and it would be practical to send books that they want instead of just pitching them a bunch of books I don't want.

Newer and hardback mean they are aiming at a collection of books that can hold up to circulating for a while and that will be current for the readers to use. So I'd hazard a guess that your old 1968 (or even 1998) Encyclopedia Britannica is out of date. But textbooks you used in recent classes, fiction books and nonfiction books, literature, How-to and Job training books would all be helpful.

The need for escapist and pleasure reading will also pressing, so again, I'd guess that your recent popular hardcover mysteries and thrillers and romance and general interest novels will also be suitable. And many libraries do have circulating popular paperbacks.

Don't forget hardcover children's books. Dr. Seuss, Newberry and Caldecott books, many others that you know are good children's books will work. Hardcover is almost a MUST for children's books at a library. They get a lot of rough treatment.

This is a concrete way that those of us who are far away from this population can help. I'll be on the look out for the mailing address.

I meant to add this question, I recall reading in this thread thread.cfm?threadid=110284&messages=206 Texas Polygamist Colony Raid, that members of that community aren't allowed any music {if my recollection is incorrect, please correct that statement}. My question is would donations of music books be welcomed? Also, many libraries have music CDs that circulate. What donations of new CDs? {I emphasize "new" because the playing quality of used CDs is often very suspect}.

Furthermore, many libraries have non-circulating, good condition, used paperpacks, hardback books, and magazines that people can take home for free. Is this library planning to do this, and if so, do they want donations of such books? {I'd imagine that they could quickly get overwhelmed with such donations, but one way that libraries in my area handle that is to have a yearly flea market where people can get bags or boxes of donated books and magazines that they select for free or for a very low cost.

Finally, given one of the things that I read on that thread I hyperlinked, it seems that members of that community were indoctrinated with racist and homophobic views. Is this library interested in new or fairly recent hardback {and softback} books written by African Americans, and other people of color, that are about race and/or other topics? Also, is this library project interested in donations of books about multiculturalism within the United States, and books about other cultures, including such authors & subjects in children's/teens' books?

I wrote to the person who posted the video. His profile says his interests include folk music and celtic music. I gave him the links to this thread and the Texas raid thread. Hopefully he will check in here and give us more info. Some of his other videos done in the past about FLDS are linked at the beginning of the Texas thread.

The video showed boxes of books already donated. One box showed covers, which included The Wizard of Oz. How ironic (pay no attention to the man behind the curtain).

Yesterday, before I found that video about the new library, I was looking at my copy of the new Tom Cruise biography that exposes scientology. I was thinking, hmmmm, I should donate that to our public library. Now I know I should donate it to the Colorado City public library.

I'm sure music books would be welcome. Jeffs only allows FLDS to have music that was often written by Jeffs himself, or other hymns.
Back when he was a fugitive and then suddenly captured, I heard him singing one of his songs on the national news coverage. Maybe I can find that online.

I have also asked him if he can set up a website with Pay Pal/credit card secure link for people in Canada, Europe, across the US who are too far away but still want to help.

------------

fincenMIB's reply to my first email, referring him to Mudcat thread.

There are 2 decent parks in town and I have friends up the canyon with 10 plus acres!

A CONCERT IN THE PARK!

I did the January 21st 2004 Press Conference in colorado City for Ross Chatwin and got 29 Press agencies to attend. I promoted the security and I suppose it was overkill, but that could make this library over night!
you gave me a HUGE idea. A concert below the RED ROCKS, like John Tesh at Red Rock! Like the Strawberry Festival! A concert in Colorado City AZ. with bring a new book of a certain value and get a discount on admission?

It would explain how books could get delivered! How people could bring book shelves, they could have a reason for coming! We could man the building around the clock as an open house.

Interesting that he is working on a "library raising" when what Warren Jeffs did there was what amounted to a "library razing."

music in FLDS, well, as you can hear in the flat affect of his voice, no emotion is supposed to be shown, a law of the church. Word "fun" banned. No laughing, no crying, no excitement, no emotion, just "keep sweet".
But how can anyone sing without some emotion?
Here is a prayer service with singing. In my mind, I can imagine that singing is the only time people in FLDS feel some release of their tightly held in emotions!

Library Re-build:
The letter I have linked here explains the basic needs of the group trying to organize a library at Colorado City. The library is for the general public, especially students who have to go to other towns to research material.
As such, I am sure that good books on any subject would be welcomed, including music books of all kinds (query by Azizi).

The letter has been printed on the KSL News Radio website (a secular station, ksl.com); link to the letter: Colorado City Library

Addresses given:
Stefanie Colgrove, P. O. Box 1935, Hilldale, Utah 84784
or:
C/O Charlotte, Colorado Post Office, Colorado City, AZ 86021
email: bbruce@ksl.com

Note that funds would be welcome, since they need $5000 to bring the building up to city code.

Perhaps someone could get this library request portion of this thread re-titled and given its own thread. Libraries are something most of us are interested in, and donations of funds or books could come from others not following this FLDS thread.

Some notes, mostly digression-
The Arizona State Library, Phoenix, website, has no notes yet about the attempt to re-open. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated in the past; don't know if they can be prevailed on to do so again.

Lake Havasu City (abt. 50,000) is the largest city in Mohave county (county seat at Kingman, abt. 23,000); other communities very small. Libraries are far between and outside of small occasional grants from the state, always operate on a shoestring. The county is about 13,500 sq. mi.; outside of San Bernardino Co. CA and a couple in NV, the largest in the states.

Subject: Need Books for Proposed Colorado City Library

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8OMjpvCRxV4 The proposed Library Building & Site!

Since Warren Jeffs banned books from the world outside, the meeting on April 24th was some what historical.
A Friends of the Library was established with a board of directors elected. Next Monday night a group will
petition the Mohave County board of Suoervisors to consider funding a Satellite rural Branch County Library.

A building has been selected, which sits on the UEP's former FLDS church trust lands. It is seen in the
YouTube.com video attached and any of these pictures can be sent upon request to a news agency or
for identifying a donation interest use. A library in Colorado City, that has books uncensored, is nothing
less than historical. Books used to have areas blacked out with markers, along with paragraphs cut out,
if they countered FLDS Polygamist church doctrine.

This is a chance for those emerging out of Warren Jeffs' shadow, to leave the 19th century behind, in favor
of the 21st century where KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. Without outside education, the children of Colorado
City are doomed and lost in our fast paced world. They need books donated and lots of them! Preferably NEW
books, hardbacks that are current knowledge of ALL subjects. They need shelves, lots of them, sturdy enough
to hold heavy books! Donations to remodel the large log cabin structure once an FLDS private school would
also be appreciated! They need to apply for a non profit status, but it's only been a few days, so donations
of cash are not yet tax deductible.

The V-P of FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY is Stefanie Colgrove at xxx-xxx-xxxx
The Public Relations Director for the Mohave County Library System is Kathy McGehee at xxx-xxx-xxxx
I am Jay Beswick an activist and former FOR KIDS SAKE Child Abuse Prevention Rep. for AZ & UT 1996-2001
with Hildale UT & Colorado City AZ in my area, along with living only 22 miles from this community, I can

$50 pledge challenge coming from Canada. Just got this in another email from Jay.
I had asked for a Pay Pal account link and he is working on getting one set up for donations.
He included a response from Canada, as he had forwarded my email to him in which I had told him about Mudcat forum members and folk musicians from around the world wanting to donate to the library.

I am particularly interested in getting public access internet computers for that library in addition to the books.

Alice

----===============

Dear Network:

... This is phenomenal; and, I hope many books or $$ are donated to this library. Unfortunately, I cannot access utube on my slow computer, but the site is there and many of you people can.

Imagine, uncensored books for the kids of that community! Or, money donations for books and shelves. With the Canadian $ nearly on par with the U.S. $ surely we can send some from Canada and this network reaches around the globe and many States. Dig into your pockets, folks. Dig deep. The more these kids learn, the more we won't have to be screaming about their abuse and bound minds.

I challenge everyone out there to match my $50 that will be in the mail as soon as I can get to my bank for the money order.

May you be richly blessed as each dollar and book pours in for your library!

Nancy Mereska, Coordinator

Stop Polygamy in Canada

====================================

Alice,

Just got off the phone with my sister who is PR for Mohave County Library system. She was in a meeting, but I anxiously stated before the meeting, Pay Pal accounts, address and phone, along with form Thank you letters for donors. My sister was the college districts SBA director manager so she knows how to put it in high gear, but this is Colorado city and the volunteers are excited, but not that quick. My contact checks her email every 7-10 days, I every few minutes.
A library is nearly historic because under Warren Jeffs, books were banned. The old books were slashed with black markers to censor objectionable statements and entire pages cut out. From what the county library director stated, there will be an adult section??? Internet Access! Lots of childrens fiction, Philosophy and subjects cult members didn't know existed. Its very exciting to me as an activist.

I spoke of a concert idea in the park 2 years ago, but life was to busy or fast to address it. We belong to a local Folk in house concert circuit here in Lancaster CA under singer song writer Joan Enguita. About the biggest name might be Mike Ronstadt TEX-MEX Santa Cruz band I think it is. Very nice small home concerts. Things we take for granted. We used to live 22 miles from Colorado City and I have 3 daughters, 15, 17 & 19 I some how related to the plight and started the underground rail road out. 5 girls age 15 in 2001 with a mixed success.

Flora Jessop took over when I moved out of Utah, with her own out there style, its been a uphill struggle, but we see a light at the end of the tunnel. Families reassigned, last names changed, girls married off with out choice after puberty. Its not complete what the news is putting out. The victims were FLDS on FLDS this time, its not like the 1953 raid at all, which some news agencies are reporting. I figure supporting this library will help the public understand what rights are just being introduced.

A Canadian network has already geared up with a $50. donation challenge. I will add that dialog. It was a group I am aware of, but not to active with. Daphne from the Vancouver Sun Newspaper passed on my draft press request to them.

I met with Jennifer Dobner of associated Press last Friday in CC and to day the local St. George Spectrum is putting a story together to run tomorrow. I will forward these stories when they run.

A gathering of lost boys were in a press conference on this documentary, where some spoke to the media. One boy said he wanted to go to college and study biochemistry. He likes science and that is why he was kicked out. He wanted to go to the public school and study science. The sign at the press conference podium said had a phone number for adopting these boys.

Hello everyone. I am a member of the friends group of the Colorado City Library. Firstly, I appreciate the support and response that we have had with this project. I would like to clarify a few things and hopefully answer some of your questions. I would like to make it known that this is a new generation of people who are trying to get this project going. Last names, prejudices and politics are things that we are working to keep away from this project entirely. This is not a religious project either, it is for the community and surrounding communities, whatever faith they may be. Because of this, we are accepting any and every material that we can for our library. We are striving for knowledge and great minds of the future. We realize that questions about african-american authors and other music types are legitimate questions. We are happy to say that we will accept all those sorts of material. We do not want to restrict the growth of the minds of these communities in any way. We are open to any genre of music from opera to hard rock. I would like to thank you again, for your support and response. Please feel free to ask anything else that you would like to know.
-Nick

By the way, Kat, up thread you mentioned the 2004 closed Library official --Jessop-- but misspelled it. Their name wasd "Jessop".

This is a branch of the family that we Jessups kicked out from the East Coast hundreds of years ago because they would not learn how to spell, One of the started a jewelry store in San Diego, and the other apparently got mixed up with cults.

I contacted a friend who has gotten Amnesty International sponsorship support for a blog day for Human Rights, May 15. I sent her the info on this library project to communicate to the Human Rights bloggers.
Hopefully this will bring more support to the CC library. I'm sure the library will need funds to operate and this may be helpful.

Still waiting for a way for people to securely donate to the library online. I'll post it when I get a link.

Dear Friends,

Not long ago, I was made aware of a special event taking place May 15th -- Bloggers Unite for Human Rights. After researching the event, I contacted Amnesty International USA and am happy to report they are now a full sponsor.

With Amnesty's extensive outreach, thousands and thousands of bloggers world wide are joining together on one day to focus the world's Internet attention on human rights.

I invite you to join your voice with thousands of others on May 15th. If you are not a blogger, but have friends who are, please feel free to forward this email on to them or send them the link to http://unite.blogcatalog.com/ for more information.

Thank you so very much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Penny

PS...If you have a Facebook account you may RSVP to the event here:

I do have a few paperbacks to give along with hardbound books, so I'm going to enclose a note that they can just put them out on a "Free" table and give them away.

Update from the people setting up the library:

--------
I just wanted to let you know we are scheduled to drive up the books this Saturday. Keep your fingers crossed that we make it through the mountains with this trailer and the books! My husband and I are going up also (separately) - I want to PERSONALLY make sure these books arrive safely.
D---- - I have been talking with Stefanie in Colorado City.
I told her that I would like to start a Summer Reading Program for the children. It would be modeled on the Summer Reading Program in the Chandler libraries.
I have been obtaining information and advice from the children's librarian at Sunset Library in Chandler. I told
Stefanie I would arrange for the "reading maps" and the prizes. Unfortunately, I don't think we are going to have enough children's books to make this program work.
I only have a few boxes of children's books going up on Saturday. The librarian at Sunset Library gave me a large bag of children's books as a donation. But, we DESPERATELY need more children's books (for all ages)
to make this program work. I am begging all the librarians in Chandler and Tempe for extra children's books.
D---- - would you and your students please keep your eyes open for children's books (all ages) for Colorado City.
I would certainly appreciate it. If I can round up some more boxes of children's books, would you be willing to take them up when YOU go in a few weeks? I am really hoping that we can implement this program for the children.

Three years later, and here is an update.

I just happened to see this article today when looking at the recent news about the FLDS cult.

The books donated were burned.

April 18, 2011, deseretnews.com

quote in part...
"There is a bonfire outside that clearly has books that have burned in it," Wyler said. "I can't say every book has been burned, because I haven't seen the inside. I can't get in there to see."

Bruce Wisan, who has been appointed by the state to oversee management of an FLDS trust, said the books were being housed in a old schoolhouse.

"It was supposed to be a library," he said. "The trust wanted to deed it to the county, but (one man) went to the county supervisors and told them that we shouldn't be taking church property and there would be lawsuit."

It is believed that there were thousands of books in the building, including some which had been donated by Barnes and Noble Booksellers. Wyler said he is not sure how many books were destroyed as he could not gain access to the schoolhouse.

"My keys no longer fit the door anymore," he said. ....

Our Montgomery County Library system discards a large number of books along with getting a huge volume of donations from this area. Some donated items are sometimes classified material.

I will talk to Richard who heads the Friends of the Library used book store, and see what he can do.

I am hoping Romney may have accepted a donation from Jeffs.
Such a linkage might produce a Perry Bachman ticket for 2012, giving Obama a better margin.

Oh dear. I missed this thread in '08, as I had things on my mind, but as I started to read the top today, I thought they would be burned. I am so sorry I was right.

Can they be taken to law for destroying other people's property?

Penny
