I was going to start a new thread that was truely ground breaking, life changing and an epiphany to everyone on Earth, but I thought better of it too.

It would have sounded elitist and wordy.

whit fields?

Khandu, is Whit Fields your name?

I heard tell you were a king but "King Whit Fields"... excuse me for saying this, but that doesn't have quite the gravitus that a king's name should have.

"Whit Fields" make me think of that song "strawberry field forever". Or even worse "whit fields" makes me think of white fields which makes me think of cotton which makes me think of pickin cotton which is definitely not a good train of thought for me.

And what does "Whit" stand for anyway? Whitney? Whitney!?!
Is that even a man's name?

I'm just sayin...

So, uh, wot's the thread gonna be about?

I'm very sorry to hear that news, Donuel. But that's not the kind of gravitus that I was talking about.

Latin word-gravitus

English translation-weight.

Sentence use- I'm a little bit over-gravitus.

[I'm just a little bit over-gravitus, mind you. But I'm working on it.]

Okay, sometimes I lie. I'm not working on it.

I think the word is gravitas: "Gravitas is a Latin noun that, as a modern loanword, conveys a sense of substance or depth of personality. " (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitas)

There's no such word as "gravitus", but I think there should be. It is an excellent word, just wanting a concept to go with it.

This isn't very heavy duty, in the scheme of things.

But, here's a blue clicky for the word gravitus:

http://www.websters-online-dictionary.org/translation/Latin/gravitus

So could Websters' online dictionary be wrong?

I'm shocked!! Simply shocked!

Maybe they made up that word. Why not? Other people make up words all the time. Folks in the Hip-Hop community are rather good at making up words 24/7 every hour of the day, seven days a week.

[You say that's what 24/7 means?]

Oh. Yeah. That's right.

I think if you look closer you will see that clicky is a translation of the meaning of the latin word gravitus. But I don't think it has any currency in English. The also Latin word gravitas does have currency in English, meaning dignity or presence, formality in bearing and appearance. It's not that they made "gravitus" up. But they aren't saying it is an English word. The Webster editor compiled that rendering of "gravitus" from Webster's etymology of "weight", he claims; but the referenced page has no mention of that word on it. I suspect a typo. possibly. If you google "gravitus" you will get gamer's nicknames, Latin texts, and fictional characters, but no useage in ordinary English as such, as a noun. You will find a few places where it is listed as the Latin for weight.

With respect for my friend, Don, I would point out the following about the maker of that film he links to:

"If you like, you can believe that the reason 10 Canadian publishers turned down Annett's first book, and the reason why his second book appears under the imprint of 1st Books Library, a vanity press in Bloomington, Indiana, and the reason his documentary was also produced in the United States, is that the powers that be in Canada are determined to conceal their terrible crimes.

Or, you might instead take into account the fact that Annett's stories are the subject of Canadian court injunctions claiming libel and defamation. Annett has responded to these legal admonitions by pleading with Amnesty International for adoption as a "prisoner of conscience." Amnesty has declined to oblige him."

It would be a revelation if he'd please produce these 'mass graves'. So far, he's not led or directed the RCMP to a single one. To my knowledge, no one else has, either.

The Lativ adverb "gravitus" is not even very common in Latin; it comes from the verb to weigh down, gravatre--see following entry:

gravitus             ADV    POS
gravo, gravare, gravavi, gravatus V (1st) TRANS   [XXXBO]
load/weigh down; burden, oppress; pollute (air); accuse, incriminate; aggravate
gravis, grave, gravior -or -us, gravissimus -a -um ADJ   [XXXAX]
heavy; painful; important; serious; pregnant; grave, oppressive, burdensome;
gravor, gravari, gravatus sum V (1st) DEP   [XXXDX]    lesser
show/bear with reluctance/annoyance; be burdened/vexed; take amiss; hesitate;

THis is also where we get the English word "gravid" applied to thiose who are visibly pregnant.

From the Vancouver Sun, May 1, 2008

"Natives doubtful of 'mass graves' report
Kids buried on reserves, ex- minister claims
Judith Lavoie, Canwest News Service
Published: Wednesday, April 23, 2008

VANCOUVER ISLAND - First nations officials say they are skeptical about claims by a defrocked United Church minister that the bodies of children from residential schools are buried in several mass graves on Vancouver Island reserves.

But they were concerned that Kevin Annett is involved with some kind of unauthorized investigation and sites may be excavated without permission.

Annett has released a report saying 28 mass graves across Canada hold "the remains of untold numbers of aboriginal children."

Annett, 52, spent from 1993 to 1995 at St. Andrew's United Church in Port Alberni before being "delisted" as a minister in 1997 after alleging the church was covering up abuse and murder of students at Alberni Residential School.

A counsellor in the Downtown Eastside, Annett said investigations into the grave sites, including collecting forensic remains, would start shortly.

But Tseshaht First Nation chief councillor Les Sam said there was no consultation with the Port Alberni band and he does not want people doing any unilateral investigating.

On Kuper Island, where Annett says there are graves in a field and in a lagoon, Penelakut Chief Lisa Shaver said the reports are alarming.

"We had no idea about any investigation and we are required to be consulted," she said.

In Alert Bay, another alleged grave site, Namgis senior administrator George Speck said he had asked around the community "and no one has a clue what he's referring to."

Azzizzizzi,

Dang it, your name is like the name of my Ethereal Kingdom, Mississississippi, I get started and forget where to stop.

Being the affable fellow that I pretend to be, I would love to answer every question you have asked about my opening post. However, the answers are too gravitus to post on this thread since this thread is not yet officially a thread; I fear the heavy responses will cause a collapse.

Aslo, (and that is not a typo, it was an intentional corruption of the word [see exhibit "A"]), Joe Offer has full awareness of what it all means. Since Joe Offer (who, by the way, is NO IGMO!) has authority here, he can decide to determine if/when the thread becomes officially sanctioned and can do so by responding to your questions. (Joe Offer aslo has authority in Pelahatchie, Missississippi, where he proudly wears the Royal Title of Second Duck of Pelahatchie!)

I must take this opportunity to let the Fine People of the Mudcat Cafe
(see exhibit "2") that there is a copycat afoot on the board!

Tis true!

This Thread, in its opening post, seems rather close to the opening post of this thread, does it not?

I am incensed and leaning gravitusly toward being irate at the idea that these things are done here.

Surely this is the work of some unsavory miscreant with whom no Mudcatter would have to do.

Peace, my friend.. a worldly man and wise, I know you sympathize. But let us not let this get our frilly panties stained. We must be strong.

gnu, I will now talk about snakes. Does this mean you will no longer watch? I hope not, as this is very profound.

Snakes can bite people. People can die as a result of snakebite. Likewise, people can bite snakes. Snakes can die as a result of peoplebite. (See exhibit "R12")

Please don't give United States newscasters any ideas. The next time they hold what is supposed to be what is supposed to be an important debate, they might ask the less than gravitas question of all those persons campaigning for president-no matter what their gender-"Do you prefer boxers, briefs, or frilly panties"?

As for me, I prefer basketball players much more than boxers.

I see that I wrote "what is supposed to be" two times.

That is what you call a typo caused by a failure to proofread or a failure to use the preview feature {which probably means the same thing}.

But since this thread isn't offical yet, typos don't matter all that much. In other words, it's not weighty enough to worry my pretty little head over-as Barbara Bush would say.

And when I start quoting Barbara Bush, you know that there's a problem in river city. Or three rivers city to be more exact.
