Consider this:

We've probably all referred to someone or heard someone else refer to someone as "a thorn in my side". Have you ever actually had a thorn in your side? I live in the woods where thorns, particlarly those of the wild blackberry and the dreaded smilax (aka catbriar) are abundant. I've had thorns in my fingers, palms, forearms, toes, feet, legs and even one or two in my head, but I've never had a thorn in my side. Oh, I can imagine ways that someone could get a thorn in his side, but I usually reserve those activities for places other than briarpatches.

I remember singing "does the chewing gum (variation: 'your spearmint') lose it's flavor on the bedpost overnight" in Scout camp in the mid-1940s. And my dad remembered singing it before that.

My Aunt said that when she lived in Pittsburg (Braddock, Allegheny County) they used to put it behind their earlobe for later. Probably a school rule thing. This would be 1910 -1917 kind of time. Gradad was criticised for missing WW1 and there was concern they were on the Lucitania in one of the crossing. Which also dates it.

Rowan's remark above reminded me that as a kid, I hated the taste of coffee (my father let me try a sip of his once), and also hated coffee ice cream. So whenever my mom bought a coffee cake, I refused to eat it, assuming that it was made with coffee. I think my reasoning made sense at the time.

Around here, coffee cakes come in all different styles, but coffee is not an ingredient. I assume they're meant to be eaten with coffee.

Here in NZ we can eat coffee buns with coffee and they don't actually have coffee in them (some people call them Sally Lunns) but a coffee cake has it in the cake and in the icing!
