a brief observation from the future...

mmmm it does taste like chicken.

powered by two wind tubines and 3 solar roofs the tissue factory was culturing chidken breast muscle. GOne are the days of chicken farms and the "humane free range chickens that got slaughtered in the end anyway. Now chicken breast farms grow muscle tissue without the need of a nervous system with eyes. Blood is a circulated vat of oxygenated saline and gore is a guy who wrote an inconvienient book.

For a country that likes a chicken in every pot and is breast crazed the tissue factory is perfect. For stranger palates we could even tissue culture hummingbird tongues by the ton and puree them on toast. Roe is a bit harder but then again it still is cheaper than caviar from the Black Sea which has now shrunk to a swamp.

Laws stil prohibit brain tissue culture, especially since the incident when human brains were cultured instead of monkey brains for Thailand restaurants since human brains grew larger.

Hospital grade tissue factories are mostly a custom order operation but some things like corneas are a one size fits all operation.

What turkeys and chickens that are kept alive live a life of luxury with only the weekly tissue borrowing of a few cells to give new meat factories their starter cells.

Black market meat factories do some unspeakable things but what are you going to do, some people have wierd tastes.

I think they might go for volume and forget most 'delicacies'. Here's a story on lab grown meat from NPR. It's a way to help reduce hunger and also stop the spread of prions such as the one that causes bovine spongiform encephalopathy (Mad Cow Disease).

We've been through this before with Surimi [aka fake lobster, shrimp, etc]. The difference is that the texture is different and the total experience is not quite the same. Soon the real thing will be considered luxury goods.

Isn't that a quote from "Soylent Green" - about "Chicken Little"?

"Chicken Little," the vat-grown meatstuff, appeared up in Space Merchants, by Fred Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth (1952):

"Scum-skimming wasn't hard to learn. You got up at dawn. You gulped a breakfast sliced not long ago from Chicken Little and washed it down with Coffiest. You put on your coveralls and took the cargo net up to your tier. In blazing noon from sunrise to sunset you walked your acres of shallow tanks crusted with algae. If you walked slowly, every thirty seconds or so you spotted a patch at maturity, bursting with yummy carbohydrates. You skimmed the patch with your skimmer and slung it down the well, where it would be baled, or processed into glucose to feed Chicken Little, who would be sliced and packed to feed people from Baffinland to Little America."

Chicken definitely have differing tastes....some like to roam free and others enjoy the company in a battery hen house.....some like pure grain, others like genetically modified......perhaps considered tasteless by us but there ya go!

And growing real meat in the lab is not the same as making fake meat, so the Surimi example is off base. If it's really the same tissue, it won't matter to taste if it's grown in a live animal or not. It should, however, have a different texture if the muscles aren't used. They'll have to have fake treadmills for the fake muscle tissue to get it to taste right, or something, I am having a very strange visual on that...

Flies in ointment department:

From the article:
But British biologist Brian Ford, author of The Future of Food, says meat has always been a more difficult proposition.
"Meat is a complex mixture of tissue," he says. "Under the microscope, you can see all sorts of gristly bits and fatty bits and muscly bits. ... It's this sort of mosaic of different cell types that changes cells into what we know as meat — and that is a problem that nobody has successfully, as yet, addressed."

.....

Mellon believes that all our food should be grown lightly on the land, using the riches of the Earth and the power of the sun — not in a factory.
"Picture it: You've got a big compound of buildings with scientists running around tending big vats of cultured cells, making sure that they're all at a constant temperature, that the cells are being kept sterile," she says. "I mean, where does that energy come from? That's a lot of fossil fuel."

Solution: Eat less meat.

Problem: Carnivorous Husband (does not like casseroles, rice, pasta, grains outside white bread or chunks of meat smaller than two decks of cards).

If we can ever print on a microscale and speed up the process we'll ba able to "print" our meat! They're doing marvelous stuff with machines that now "print" using heat, platics, solvents, glues and other materials. You can turn out a prototype of a device with interior working parts faster than it takes to carve them all and assemble it.

"Wholesome and nutritious, tastes just like chicken!"

I remember what chicken tastes like from my childhood.

I wish chicken tasted like that today. The breast meat tastes like water, the dark meat little better.

Buy chickens from somebody who raises them outdoors. Healthy, tasty, big chickens. Don't avoid older chickens, either - tough but make the best tasting soup, stew, casseroles, etc.

Chickens really, really love eating ants.

You could also crack an egg from about 9" from the frying pan and it would hold together. Now!, forget it. When it lands its scramble eggs.
