Anybody else been to this place and come back long enough to tell about it?
Second Life

I've been running loose in there for three days. It's a remarkable sorta place. Live concerts, sim concerts...buy land make sim products, explore, meet...it's very addicting I fear.

I was at a coffeehouse where by the musicians performing on stage were directly connected to Second Life and raking in a fair amount of money. Very very interesting.

Tweed, my Rog spends an hour or two in there most evening, in the music areas. He's not a musician, but likes most of the music he hears.

There are several threads on this, including in which dwditty talks about his jamming session with musician friends all over the world, etc. My computer firewall or somesuch doesn't like it. I can't get in for love or money...maybe that's a good thing!**bg**

Actually There is a Tweed's Blues Juke Joint in second life, I built it 6 months ago in anticipation of Tweeds arrival there. Of course like the real world some neighborhoods are better than others. if you are an artist or a musician there is a lot of like minded people to talk with. Its basically a multi media chat board. I think know the coffee house you speak of Beer....the performer is Grace Buford (Cylendrian Rutabaga in SL) Tweed got to hear her sing last night. she's a regular performer in a coffee house in the Carolinas. There are several musicians I know who are handicapped who make their living performing there since they cant leave their homes. Also some elderly musicians in assisted living. I got to hear one fellow perform there who was well in his 80's and the hooked him up in the home he was living in. A very impressive Blues musician, and it seemed to make him very happy to play in front of an audience again...even if it was a virtual audience. He also like the tips he got from the appreciative crowd which was real cash, not virtual.

I wandered over to SL today, signed up and gussied up an avatar and went through the tutorials. Before I knew it it was six o'clock and I had to rip my eyes off the screen and make myself quit the damn thing. It's a complete attention-sucker!!

It's good, though!!

GUEST,theblueslady, the coffeehouse I was referring to is called the "Adair Coffee House" located just off the Island of Montreal. This show took place about 3 months ago and though it was held here live it was "controlled" for this event from Australia.

Blueslady and I danced the nite away at a gathering last evening. This is a place where everyone is beautiful and gifted. The live music was great and I really think that the musicians and music lovers here would go absolutely apeshit over second life. It's like Mudcat in many ways. Lots of folks helping you along, and I need all the help I can get. I think at any one time there are 40-60 thousand folks wandering three or four continents and many are artists, musicians, sculptors, architects...it' really addicting. Not unlike the first time you got on the internet. So much new stuff to find and do.
There are creeps also, just like in the real world or Mudcat or anywhere you go, but I've met only one or two so far, and they can't eat you so it doesn't really matter about them too much unless you're overly sensitive.

(Okay, it's time now for 'Spaw to come in and tell me to get my head outta my ass...Go ahead and get it over with, I'm ready for it..)

I tried to peek into SL a few months ago. As I began the signup/registration/familiarization process, I was offered the option to create an avatar now, or to put it off until later. I opted to procrastinate, and then was never able to go back and complete the process, nor even to "get in" and lurk/listen with or without a visible presence.

So I quit.

Every time someone brings this up again, I feel that I'd like to poke my nose in, to see and hear whatever's going on. However, I don't have a lot of time and attention available for any "second" life ~ reall life is more than demanding enougfh for me these days, thank you.

By the way: the US version of the TV comedy "The Office" had an episode this past year wherein Dwight is obsessively busy in Second Life. His Second Life persona goes into business running "Third Life," an imaginary world within the imaginary Second Life world. Too funny...

Exactly the sort of response I would expect from you Largle Harg, being cooped up in between snow drifts and horny wolverines 10 months out of the year and the other 2 months spent hacking yore way through clouds of mosquitos and poison ivy.
I should think that "Second Life" would be exactly what you need to brighten your otherwise humdrum Canuckian first life, Hargue, what with yore damned free heath care and cheery fucking Great White dispositions...gahhh...one in every crowd!

I recommend that you join up immediately and realize yore secret dreams of actually becoming either a dachshund or chimpanzee, or some sort of hybrid chimpanzhund!!

Ha! ;-) Well, Tweed, I'll tell you what worries me about Second Life. I am worried about how addicted I could get to it and how much time I would waste on the game. It would be fun roaming around in the guise of a fedora and trenchcoat-wearing chimp, for sure! Quite a temptation.

There's been so much cold weather here this spring that the black flies got wiped out after a couple of days. Hurrah! The mosquitoes have been set back badly by it a couple of times too, but I'm sure they will return shortly. I intend to buy one of those outdoor gazebos with mosquito netting all around the sides so I can enjoy the backyard and read a good book without too much harassment.

Spray yoreself down with Listerine Harg. The rednecks here are swearing by it. I don't know if it'll deter Canuckian mosquitos, but it seems to keep the Florida bugs at bay.

In my sister's bar (Oceanside Bar), they have a hummingbird that has actual hummingbird behavior and it interacts with avatars. I found it last night when I was exploring among the plant life there. The hummingbird hovered around me for a while, looking directly at me, and then it flew off to feed on some flowers, then it came back and hovered around me for a while, and back to the flowers again. If I moved to a different location within its territory, it would follow me and hover around me for a while before going to feed on the flowers again. I thought that was kind of cool.

Note to performers: I play for money on SL, but rather than converting to US dollars, I give it a friend who is a regular at our weekly jam. In return, he buys me drinks! A perfect system, I'd say...ha.

Second Life can certainly suck up one's time - there are many who seem to always be there. I go on, play music or listen to music and leave. The sound quality, by the way, is superb. For the most part, performers a "booked" at any of the many venues to do a show - usually an hour or so. I am not that well organize, so quite often I go on Paltalk instead, where there are constantly running "open mic" rooms where you can simply raise your hand, wait your turn, and perform a song. Both sites have their pluses and minuses.

Tweed, wait til you try making music with others by "chaining." All quite remarkable.

I looked at Second Life's home page but got no further - dunno whether I want to sign up (to it would be fantastic to have hummingbird looking at me, I've had Australian nocturnal birds & animals looking at me when I spent a while in the Nocturnal house of a local animal park & that was magic)

listening to good music would also be magic.

Before mudcatting I found the site of a great patchwork shop I visited recently & saw one of it's staff had created a quilt show page on a suppliers Second Life site!

Music? Retailers?? Craft? what else???
