From: GUEST,erinmaidin

Just listening to Emmylou Harris on youtube...singing "waltz across texas tonight". Looked up the lyrics online...many different websites...and what is written and what she is singing are two entirely different things...and I prefer the lyrics she is singing..however...I can't actually make out the third line of the second verse. What is written is "We folded our cards when the hand wasn't strong but that wheel will keep spinning long after we're gone."
What she sings is "?????????????....Shake hands and come out dancing for all of it's worth..shake hands and come out dancin' for all that your worth."
Anyone got a handle on this?
Thanks

Subject: Add: WALTZ ACROSS TEXAS TONIGHT (Harris/Crowell)
From: Joe Offer

Here is a link to the YouTube video of Emmylou Harris singing Waltz Across Texas Tonight, which she wrote with Rodney Crowell. It was first on the Wrecking Ball album, and later on the Songbird box set. It has a title similar to "Waltz Across Texas," but it's a completely different song.

-Joe-

This is the version I found online; and, as you say, it's different from the recording you refer to. I've posted both versions below.

WALTZ ACROSS TEXAS TONIGHT (Wrecking Ball Version)
(Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell)

The wind can blow cold, it moans and it cries
When it carries the sound of a thousand goodbyes
But if you listen tonight on that high, lonely plain
You'll just hear my voice as it calls out your name
You'll just hear my voice as it calls out your name

You've been on a road that just don't seem to end
Where that broken old heart of yours won't ever mend
You've crossed over bridges and bridges they burn
So many rivers and so much to learn
So many bridges and so much to learn
But the moon is so full, the stars are so bright
And my hand is steady, my touch is light
Look in my eyes, hold on real tight
And I'll waltz you my darling across Texas tonight
I'll waltz you my darling across Texas tonight

We both have known hard luck and love that's gone wrong
When the ghosts take the shadows and the night takes too long
We folded our cards when the hand wasn't strong
But that wheel will keep spinning long after we're gone
Yeah, that wheel will keep spinning long after we're gone
And the moon is so full, the stars are so bright
And my hand is steady, my touch is light
Look in my eyes, hold on real tight
And I'll waltz you my darling across Texas tonight

I'll waltz you my darling across Texas tonight
Look in my eyes, hold on real tight
And I'll waltz you my darling across Texas tonight
I'll waltz you my darling across Texas tonight

Waltz Across Texas Tonight (Songbird Version)
(Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell)

The wind can blow cold, it moans and it cries
When it carries the sound of a thousand goodbyes
But if you listen tonight on that high, lonely plain
You'll just hear my voice as it calls out your name
You'll just hear my voice as it calls out your name

You've been on a road that just don't seem to end
Where that broken old heart of yours won't ever mend
Ah, but you'll never know what's beyond the next June (bend?)
With your face to the ground and your feet standing still.
With your face to the ground and your feet standing still.

But the moon is so full, the stars are so bright
And my hand is steady, my touch is light
Look in my eyes, hold on real tight
And I'll waltz you my darling across Texas tonight
I'll waltz you my darling across Texas tonight

We both have known hard luck and love that's gone wrong
When the ghosts take the shadows and the night takes too long
But there's still gold in them hills and life in this earth (?)
Shake hands and come out dancing for all that you're worth
Shake hands and come out dancing for all that you're worth.

Don, the Digital Tradition attributes the other song to Quanah Talmadge "Billy" Tubb, and says it was recorded by Ernest. Do you have any idea about the identity of 'Quanah Talmadge "Billy" Tubb' and what his relationship was to Ernest? I've been trying to learn the Earnest Tubb melody for years, and it just wouldn't stick with me; and I realized this morning that now I know it. I sang the whole thing to myself today. Maybe I can add it to my repertoire now (or maybe I'll forget the tune tomorrow....)
Quanah Talmadge "Billy" Tubb sounds like the name of an old-time corrupt Southern politician, doesn't it?

-Joe-

Here are the Digital Tradition lyrics:

WALTZ ACROSS TEXAS (from DT)
(Quanah Talmadge "Billy" Tubb)

When we waltz together, my world's in disguise
A fairyland tale that's come true,
And when you look at me with those stars in your eyes,
I could waltz across Texas with you.

cho: I could waltz across Texas with you in my arms
Waltz across Texas with you;
Like a storybook ending I'm lost in your charms
I could waltz across Texas with you.

My troubles and heartaches are all up and gone
The moment you came into view;
And with your hand in mine I could dance on and on
I could waltz across Texas with you.

Before I met you, I never would dance
Never would dance it is true;
But now we're together I jump at the chance
To waltz across Texas with you.

Last verse by Debbie McClatchy

And now friends and neighbors I have this request
There's one thing I want you to do:
Just sing one more chorus of the song we love best
I Could Waltz Across Texas With You.

Joe....between the two of us by golly I think we have it! The word you have in the second verse as "june" is actually hill...and that line you came up with in the other verse is much better than anything I can make out! I don't know if I'm the only one that thinks this...I love Emmylou...but have noticed..since the beginning of her career (I've been watching a lot of her on youtube) she has a tendency to be a bit "lazy" with her articulation...anyone else notice this? I wish not to detract from her talent, as she seems to get away with it...just an observation.

The name Quanah brings to mind Quanah Parker, who was a
comanche chief, and I believe he helped to bring written
language to the native tribespeople.

Melissa, glad to see that you have found mudcat. Do
you have any stories about music in your family,
with musicians in your family, I hope you have!

Another song that is similar to the one(s) mentioned
here is West Texas Waltz by Butch Hancock.

Melissa,

Thanks for signing in here. I've been singing Waltz across Texas for many years and I treasure the song, like many of Talmadge and Ernest.

It's great to read your words here.

regards,

I have lots of memories, from when I was young. Some of the best ones are from my grandpa sitting around and singing to us. It still seems like yesterday that I can hear him singing. I did not take his passing very well at all, but I guess that just comes with losing a loved one. I do remember a very funny story, he has taken us kids to Sea World CA in the Motor Home. We drove from DFW to sunny CA, we laughed cried and sang the whole way there. We had almost reached Sea World and we were in the middle of traffic he completely stopped the motor home and started cussing! Some on had cut him off, LOL.. guess I know where I get it from! Anyway.. just a silly little story..

What fun to hear from you! Ernest T was one of my favorite performers for years. I'm sorry that I'm not familiar with your grandpa and his work. I didn't realize that he wrote the hit 'Waltz Across Texas' or I'd have known about him sooner.

Appears there are two distinct version under the same title, then.

The Tubbs version:
