Subject: BS: Biker Barbie Bites Back (gas $$$) From: Lyrical Lady Date: 18 Jun 08 - 07:05 PM I got fed up with working just to fill the tank. $1.60 something a litre, so I bought an electric scooter. I canceled the insurance on my car, and now, I just ride past the pumps. Does anyone else have one or something similar? I realize they aren't much good on the highways but they are great for small rural areas. I'm lovin' it! It's a Motorino, made by E V Rider. No license or insurance required and you can park anywhere! It's good for 50 km's a charge. Everytime some guy goes around me in his Doolie Dodge Ram Pick-up...I think to myself, "I bet that just cost him 20 bucks"! I'm kinda thinkin' maybe a Harley Sportster next...Whadda ya think?? Subject: RE: BS: Biker Barbie Bites Back (gas $$$) From: Lyrical Lady Date: 18 Jun 08 - 08:36 PM Oh my, who knew... a "Harley Barbie".!! Just kidding about the Sportster...it was my alter ego talking! I had my "Bike License" long before my drivers license, and now that I'm on my little "Scootaloo"...I'm kinda remembering the ol' days. What fun I had! B |
Subject: RE: BS: Biker Barbie Bites Back (gas $$$) From: Little Hawk Date: 18 Jun 08 - 08:54 PM An electric scooter wouldn't work too well in my area, but I applaud your decision. Sounds like it's working well for you. |
Subject: RE: BS: Biker Barbie Bites Back (gas $$$) From: MarkS Date: 18 Jun 08 - 09:03 PM If you want the power of a gas engine, be sure to get something in at least the 250cc range, and preferably a twin piston model. Gas mileage will still be great, and the performance will allow you to go longer than just local jaunting. Take a look at the Honda or Yamaha line. Stay away from the so called "crotch rockets" or performance bikes, and stay with something in street finish for comfort. Mark (whose ride is a Yamaha Virago - 60 mpg) (unless it is winter or raining) |
Subject: RE: BS: Biker Barbie Bites Back (gas $$$) From: GUEST,Chief Chaos Date: 18 Jun 08 - 09:33 PM One of the biggest problems that previous attempts had was fitting motor, transmission, and batteries (old car batteries or marine battery) within the limited space of the motorcycle frame. I tried to apply for a grant to develop a new electric motorcycle a couple of years back given new developments in lithium batteries and electric engines that are high torque/high horsepower that will fit within a motorcycle rim. Wouldn't you know it that the Gov't said that there weren't enough advances in the technology to warrant a $20K grant! There is a firm in China that just recently decided not to sell their electric cycles/scooters here anymore because of litigation. Seems that even if crashing an electric scooter is exactly like crashing a motorized one, because it's a new machine the lawyers were hammering them saying the product was somehow defective in that it allowed the rider to crash. |
Subject: RE: BS: Biker Barbie Bites Back (gas $$$) From: dick greenhaus Date: 19 Jun 08 - 12:29 PM It's interesting--and sad--that the major motorcycle manufacturers have all but given up on the old "sports cycle" concept: the moderately-sized bike that can be ridden comfortably at safe highway speeds, Now we can choose between bloated "cruisers", balls-to-the-wall "cafe racers" or mile-high "enduros" if we're looking for street machines. |

I can't say I enjoyed the experience, but I can say that I was very relieved that we made it to our destination & back safely]. |

Subject: RE: BS: Biker Barbie Bites Back (gas $$$) From: irishenglish Date: 19 Jun 08 - 02:13 PM There was a great cartoon last week of a guy in an enormous SUV pointing a gun at someone on a bicycle. The caption was one pedestrian saying to the other, "Bikejacking"! If it works for you, absolutely-good call! |
