Subject: Can anyone Identify this???
From: A small Fluffy Sheep

I had an old Spinners tape (anyone remember them?) that had a song on it that went something like this:

In manchester that city, of cotton twist n' twill, Lived the subject of me song, the cause of all me ills, She was handsome young and twenty, her eyes were rosy blue, Admirers she had plenty, her name was dorothy drew,

CHORUS: She was very fond o' dancing, Allow me to remark, Then one fine day she danced away, With the Calico printers clark,

At a private ball I met her, in eighteen sixty three, I never will forget her though she was unkind to me, I was dressed in the pink of fashion, me lavender gloves were new, And I danced the bold segassion(???)with me charming dotty drew,

------------------------------------------

There were several more verses but Im not sure of them.

Can anyone help?? Sorry for any spelling mistakes etc :)

Calico Printer's Clerk (click here). It's on an EMI CD called "The Spinners in Concert." don't know if it's still available. Good song, though.
Sheep, it's a good idea to try a database search and a forum search before requesting songs. This one came up with a search for Calico. If you do start a thread to request a song, try to make the thread title a bit more specific. Thanks.

I had a moment of culture clash. The Spinners I know were an soul group from the 70's or 80's. I'm positive they didn't do this song.

So there be some Irish Spinners I reckon.

No, Roger, The Spinners were (are) from Liverpool, and they were very popular. That rare breed, folksingers who made loads of money!!! Calico Printers Clerk is one I have been doing for years, being from Manchester and all. Don't forget to put the Eminor in if you're playing in C (Digitrad doesn't tell you that!!!) Hwyl, Bron.

The Spinners had an arrangement with the soul group. In Britain, the folk group was known as The Spinners and the soul group was The Detroit Spinners. In the US, the soul band was The Spinners and the folk group was The Liverpool Spinners.

It shows just how popular The (Liverpool) Spinners made themselves in their quarter of a century of performing.

Shoh slaynt,

Bobby Bob
