I've trawled the Digitrad and done a forum search and was amazed that the words to this classic aren't there. Digitrad mentions "Moat on the Ledge"....am I missing something? Words, please, and chords too if poss. Hwyl, Bron.

An ALta VIsta search turns it up (I did one yesterday) but beware the chords seem a bit off in places.

Llanfair,
Are you looking for the Fairport Convention song of the same name (written by Richard Thompson) and featured on "What we did on our holidays"? Everyone "associates" it with Martin Lamble's death..very poignant song.
Cheers
Mick

Hi Llanfair

I found the lyrics and chords at OLGA, posted by Martin McCarthy. A couple of female friends of mine sings this song and it is pretty powerful stuff.

OLGA lyrics & chords to Meet on the Ledge

Greig Chisholm inquires:
>Does anybody have the tab for Meet on the Ledge by Fairport Convention and
>could they post it or e-mail it. Thanks in advance.

Goodness me, it's a while since I played that one. No tab, but here's the words and chords as best as I can remember them. (Any corrections most gratefully accepted).

Meet On The Ledge - Fairport Convention
 A F#m* A Em* A F#m Em Em7
We used to say that, come the day, we'd all be making songs
G D G D A
Or finding better words. These ideas never lasted long.
F#m* A Em* A F#m Em Em7
The way is up along the road. The air is growing thin.
G D G D A
Too many friends who tried were blown off this mountain with the wind.

A Em
Meet on the ledge; we're gonna meet on the ledge.
G D
When the time is up I'm gonna see all my friends.
A Em
Meet on the ledge; we're gonna meet on the ledge.
G D
If you really mean it, it all comes round again.

A F#m* A Em* A F#m Em Em7
Now I see I'm all alone. But that's the only way to be.
G D G D A
You'll have your chance again; then you can do the work for me.

Meet on...etc.
NB: the F#m and Em marked with a '*' - I'm almost sure that I used to play a Bm for these two chords, but the F#m and Em sound better just now. (I have a guitar with me, but not the record). You might like to stick Bm in there if it sounds better for you.

Martin McCarthy (mmc@ehabitat.demon.co.uk) posts chords to Fairport Convention's "Meet on the Ledge." He says,

>NB: the F#m and Em marked with a '*' - I'm almost sure that I used to
>play a Bm for these two chords, but the F#m and Em sound better just
>now. (I have a guitar with me, but not the record). You might like to

If you are playing the song in A, the marked chords should indeed be Bm.

Actually, though, on the album, the song is played in B-flat. (Someone's playing a piano on the track, so it's really not too surprising.)

Here are the chords of the song, in Bb:

MEET ON THE LEDGE - Fairport Convention
(Richard Thompson, Island Music [BMI])
Bb Cm Bb Cm Bb Gm Fm Fm7
We used to say that, come the day, we'd all be making songs
Ab Eb Ab Eb Bb
Or finding better words. These ideas never lasted long.
Cm Bb Cm Bb Gm Fm Fm7
The way is up along the road. The air is growing thin.
Ab Eb Bb Eb Bb
Too many friends who tried blown off this mountain with the wind.

(Short bridge in F major, with guitar figure in descending parallel sixths)

Bb Fm
Meet on the ledge; we're gonna meet on the ledge.
Ab Eb
When the time is up I'm gonna see all my friends.
Bb Fm
Meet on the ledge; we're gonna meet on the ledge.
Ab Eb
If you really mean it, it all comes round again.

Bb Cm Bb Cm Bb Gm Fm Fm7
Now I see I'm all alone. But that's the only way to be.
Ab Eb Ab Eb Bb
You'll have your chance again; then you can do the work for me.

Meet on...etc.
Between the chorus and the next verse is a guitar figure backed by the piano playing in F:
 |-----13-----------11----------10---------8|
|------------------------------------------|
|12/14--------10/12--------8/10--------6/8-|
|------------------------------------------|
|------------------------------------------|
|------------------------------------------|
Which resolves to Bb at the start of the verse.

Here's the words from a Richard Thompson web site - it has lyrics to all the Fairport songs he wrote or co-wrote here:

MEET ON THE LEDGE (by Richard Thompson)

We used to say "There'd come the day we'd all be making songs
Or finding better words" These ideas never lasted long

The way is up along the road, the air is growing thin
Too many friends who tried, blown off this mountain with the wind

Meet on the ledge, we're going to meet on the ledge
When my time is up, I'm going to see all my friends
Meet on the ledge, we're going to meet on the ledge
If you really mean it, it all comes around again

Yet now I see, I'm all alone, but that's the only way to be

About time we refreshed this I think.

Is anyone quite definitive about the chord sequence? Some of those above don't quite sond right to me, and I cannot pitch the opening words against those chords at all.

Has anyone by any chance got dots with chord symbols?

Of course Nowadays Richard Thompson has his own web site BESWEB where you can find the words (but not chords or music) for all his songs.
It is always worth checking there for the correct (official) lyrics.
Quack!

Definitely go with the

A Bm A Bm A A/G# F#m Em

If you play a DUM-CHING on the A chord with no singing then start singing "We used to say" as you strum the Bm it works fine, and the same with the second half of the line.

Then strum A, A with a G# bass note and then sing "We'd all be making songs" as you get to the F#m etc - it works just fine.

Hope that makes sense.

So against the A/Bm opening change, the notes sung are A,B,E, am I right?

I think it's actually (low) E, B C#. Then (low) E, A, (high) E. Could be wrong, however!

Hope this makes sense but this is how I hear it -

Chord/beat
Notes
Words

A   /   /   /   |   Bm /   /   /   |
-   -   -   a   |   b c#   d   /   |
             We   used to say...   |

A   /   /   /   | Bm /   /   /   |
-   -   -   e   | a   e* e* /   |
             that   come the day... |

(the two e* are an octave above the other e)

Hope that makes some sense
