Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Charley Noble Date: 25 Sep 08 - 12:00 PM Just an update on the Songs from Cicely Fox Smith Workshop, scheduled for one hour beginning 10 AM on Saturday morning. Some folks have already contacted me and plan to lead singing versions of her poems. As workshop coordinator I'd love to hear from more people in advance via PM if they'd also like to lead a song. Here are some of the poems people have expressed interest in leading: Poor Old Ship Tow Rope Girls Limehouse Reach Sea Dreams (lovely but very long!) The Eternal Feminine Homeward (aka Hampshire Lads) There should also be ample opportunity for someone to lead a song if they just show up, or join in the chorus or just listen. I've prepared a 6-page handout and will lead 3 or so songs myself that illustrate C. Fox Smith's range of interest in the Great Age of Sail. So many great workshops, only one body! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: GUEST,Dan's laptop Date: 23 Sep 08 - 05:27 PM It happens to all of us Bobert. Mick, Kendall and I have to miss all of your mini (and Elizabeth!). You could still get to 45 minutes of the Utah workshop. Last year I had a workshop at the same time as Gordon Bok's mini, and only one person showed up. (And I'm still grateful you came, Mom!) I thought the "All About Instruments" workshop could use a little explanation, for those who haven't figured out how to get the workshop descriptions on the schedule. (Move your cursor over the title.) The official description is: "Bring instruments, questions and knowledge for a show-and-tell about many kinds of folk instruments." This will be a chance to show off your cool or weird instrument, to ask questions of other instrumentalists about playing and proper care and maintenance (ie, How do you play basic autoharp melodies? How do I know when it's time for a neck reset on my guitar? What are my cheaper alternatives? What difference does the tension on my banjo head make? What should I look for when buying a concertina?) and to generally pool our knowledge about these tools of our trade. And, of course, we'll play and hear tunes. What the workshop turns out to be will largely depend on who shows up and what the needs are. So I hope some of you can bring some of your more unusual or interesting instruments for the "show-and-tell" portion. Dan |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: SINSULL Date: 20 Sep 08 - 12:08 PM So once again I have to be in two places at once - the sign of another great Getaway. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Bill D Date: 20 Sep 08 - 12:00 PM The camp is flat, and not too large....with roller skates one can rush madly between workshops and 'almost' ........ no, wait...you KNOW all the good stuff will happen while you are skating....and besides, you'll pass some group jamming in the grass and want to stop. Ah, well...par for the course.... "Good, though!" |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Nancy King Date: 20 Sep 08 - 11:35 AM OK, Folks, here it is! The schedule grid for the Getaway is now online here! That brings up the Saturday schedule, and there's a link at the top of that to Sunday's. Once again, Dean has incorporated a nifty feature that allows you to see the descriptive blurb for each event by placing your cursor over the event. I must point out that this schedule is still SUBJECT TO CHANGE, though it would be WAY better if we didn't have to make any changes (every time we change something, it messes up other things, creating a dreadful can of worms). If you are a workshop leader and we have you in two places at once, let us know and we'll change it. If you simply want to be in two places at once, well, join the club. Better too much choice than too little, right? Anyhow, we think it looks pretty good, and we're definitely looking forward to seeing you all there! Less than two weeks to go! Hoo hah! Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Genie Date: 13 Sep 08 - 08:06 PM Yes, Barry, we wimmin know better than to tell some people *cough*Big Mick*cough* that we're "looking for someone to hook up with." *g* I know it's a warm and friendly crowd. I just like the idea of putting out a sort of blanket call for interested music accomplices ... er ... collaborators better than going up to a bunch of different people and asking "Say, do ya wanna do a duet or trio?" But, as I told Sussex Carole, it had occurred to me that the Mudcat forum IS a message board, so it's easy to post right here that I'm interested in either getting some instrumental or vocal backup on a song for the concert or forming a duo, trio, or quartet for it. I've already gotten 2 PMs (thanks, folks!). Maybe some other people will also post that they are looking for music team participants. Genie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Leadfingers Date: 13 Sep 08 - 06:24 PM Genie - PM sent |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Barry Finn Date: 13 Sep 08 - 06:23 PM Genie They can still do their solo if they're joining in with you on your time slot. Part of the wonder is that if you're arriving on Friday by the Saturday evening concert you've had plenty of time to sample a very large percentage of the crowd & them you, so it's pretty easy to find folks whose tastes run alike. Then you've always the option of just announcing that you're looking for someone to partner up with. You'd better be careful how you word that though, you could end up with more than you bargined or asked for, which is not to say that's a bad thing. I don't know about message boards but you could write that in beside you name on the sign up sheet ("Looking for partner in duo or trio, that way if no one takes you up you won't know whose's rejected you. You again better explain yourself, dou's & trio's sound very interesting. See you there & introduce yourself, there's no reason to feel shy there, you're already among friends, you just haven't met them yet. There's an option, I think when you sign up members of the FSGW get little buttons/pins that show the FSGW along with their name & Mudcatters get the same with their sign in name or their real name, so you'll be known as Genie if you'd like with some kind of mudcatter thingy. It really is a warm & friendly, welcoming crowd. Barry |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Genie Date: 13 Sep 08 - 05:02 PM You're probably right, Barry (although I don't know how good a scroundle sounds with a guitar *g*). I guess if I sign up I could put a little note beside my name saying "would like to do group." I'm shy about asking people to join me, since it feels I'm putting them on the spot and if a bunch of people say no, it's hard not to feel rejected even though they may have very legitimate reasons for passing (such as they want to do their own solo or other band thing and people are supposed to perform only once). I don't mean to make it sound like that big a deal, but sometimes there are several people just itching to do a duo or trio but not happening to connect with each other. Kind of like being at a party where there's a band and not knowing who wants dance partners and who doesn't. One idea: Will there be any sort of message board, where people can post notes like "looking for carpool home" or "looking for band members for concert?" Genie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Barry Finn Date: 13 Sep 08 - 03:57 PM Hi Genie There's plenty of singing time, informarly, before the sign ups. So you can keep an ear open to anyone that you'd fancy singing with & just ask if they'd care to join you. Prior to the sign ups you'll get to hear a whole variety of talented people & they'll get to hear you too. Even after the sign up & actually up till you go on stage there's always time to recruit any amout of scroundles that you'd like & there is no lack of talent in any type of folk music you'd care to uncover. See you all there Hopefully there'll be plenty of folks that would want to join me & Dave Diamond (I think) at the shanty workshop. Barry |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Leadfingers Date: 13 Sep 08 - 03:23 PM That seemed to happen in '05 was that people booked a concert spot and then invited people to join them ! As I recall I played in at least two scratch bands on the Saturday ! |
