I'm glad to see there's so much enthusiasm here, and that so many of you will be with us! Looks like it will be a great Getaway! Not that we've ever had a bad one...

I do need to point out that we are still in the planning stages, program-wise. We've got lots of good ideas, and now we're in the process of winnowing down the list and figuring out who should lead what. It's more complicated than it seems on the surface -- we need to consider who will be there, and their preferences, as well as time constraints and "balance" (in regard to content AND people) in the program. At this point, VERY few things are definite.

Please keep in mind that the Getaway is not just a Mudcat gathering. It is -- and has been for well over 40 years now -- the Folklore Society of Greater Washington's annual weekend. There are many FSGW folks who come regularly and participate actively, who are not on Mudcat. We need to be in touch with them, too.

So, the three of us on the Program Committee (me, Carly, and Lorraine) have been contacting a lot of people by phone, PM, and email to find out if they're coming this year and what they'd like to do, and we haven't heard back yet from quite a few of them. (Not to mention the fact that we're having a little trouble with communication among ourselves...) So the potential for confusion is pretty high. Please don't assume that everything that's been suggested will actually end up on the schedule! We'll try to fit in as much as we can, taking into consideration the ideas mentioned in this thread, our own -- er -- creations, and ideas from non-Mudcatters.

That said, I can definitely promise it will be great!

Maybe an Old Time songs workshop? We have often had old timey workshops that were, in essence, jam sessions - but Old Time Songs could also include unaccompanied ballads, solo pieces and others, as well as the stringband music that's so much fun to jam on.

Also historical songs - that's always fun. And since we're in October, I like the ghoulies and ghosties idea.

I'd say train songs, but something tells me that'll be pretty well covered in a Utah Phillips workshop. (Last night I was playing "Casey Jones" - the "good old rounder but he's dead and gone" version - and my 14 month old son kept going "Choo! Choo!" every time the word "train" came up.)

There will be a C. Fox Smith workshop, according to my PM from Nancy, and I think I'd like it to be a demonstration of how some of her nautical poems have been adapted for singing from different corners of this wide world. It may be a very small group, but maybe interest will build. I'd like to know in advance if anyone else is prepared to lead one of her songs. I have lots of songs I can lead and lots of background on her life but that's not my favorite kind of workshop. I'd much rather provide bits of background in the context of a particular poem. And I'll certainly prepare a handout.

I know Bat Goddess leads "Race of Long Ago." Are there others?

There is a discography of recorded C. Fox Smith poems I've prepared which is available on the C. Fox Smith perma thread. Or I can send it to anyone who PM's me.

Okay, first of all, my bad!!!

When I was PNM's about participation I assumed that I was needed to facilitate the blues workshop... I have since learned that my buddy, Roger from Baltimore, had been asked so I "if I am nominated, I will nopt run and if I am elected I will not serve..." There... That oughtta take care of that little buziness...

As for the band:

LJ on harmonica
JimmyT on Bass (yes, bring a small amp)
Amos on lead guiatr
Bobert on guitars and vocals

Anyone else want in??? We could use a woman and maybe someone with non-musical disabilities for diversity... Maybe a leftie... No, not politics, gol danged it... Left handed...

My Roots workshop is simply my attempt to use recordings to present the kind of material that people like Pete Seeger and Martin Carthy and Ewan MacColl learned from. I try to provide a minimum of talk and a maximum of music, and to present a really broad sweep of what folk music was before it became pop. I've played music from chain gangs, gypsies, early blues artists, spiritual choirs, gospel groups, sailors and whatever.

I, at least, have always enjoyed the yearly musical lectures that make up your annual (verging on perennial) Roots workshop.

Some uninitiated readers though, might come to the conclusion based on posts upscroll that the term "Roots Workshop" would indicate some sort of "Beet Generation" oriented affair, an excuse to sing all their favorite Irish famine laments, or even a New Age way way to get in touch with one's "inner-tuber" and and might not bother to turnip or carrot all.

You might want to tell the uninformed what kind of roots-for-the- home-team that the always-worthy workshop actually consists of.

SINSULL, if you feel you must be rosin to the occaision to answer the crank call of the siren song of Dick's hurdy gurdy, we'd love to see what you create, and we hope it'll be up and running and giving chase by Getaway time.

And of course, the more people that bring their own similar instruments, the easier it will be to bill the tribute as "Live At Gurdy's Folk City". Imagine a whole herd o' gurdies! That might even sell a live CD of the proceedings and establish a market for our "local legend" in Greenwich Village for it. But then again, maybe not......
