Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Ferrara Date: 20 Jul 08 - 10:44 AM So, Bobert, what you're planning now is this year's Big Finale Acoustic-Electric Spectacular for the Saturday night concert, huh? No balloons? No black girdles? Well I guess amplified blues at the Getaway is just as shocking.... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Bobert Date: 20 Jul 08 - 09:24 AM Ahhhhh, I resigned as facilitator of the blues workshop, Barry... Roger is gonna do it... And, yeah, I hope Max shows... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Barry Finn Date: 20 Jul 08 - 01:02 AM Hi Bobert Any Blues workshop presented without Roger &/or Max ain't really "the blues", you'd better get them on the team too. Barry |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Barry Finn Date: 20 Jul 08 - 12:25 AM I like Dan's suggestion about "Old Time Songs" espically if Elizabeth LaP. will be attending, she's been priming up for a spot like that since she was just knee high to old Jasper & Jasper's not to big of a dog either. Is there any interest in "Prison Work Songs" workshop???? Barry |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Bobert Date: 19 Jul 08 - 09:51 PM Good God Almighty, Genie... We got it goin' now!!! The juke joint comin' to the Getaway!!! Break out the wings and cold "40s" 'cause we gonna party tonight... (What about the a camp hall monitors, Bobert???) Not to fear, if the blues don't corrupt 'um, the big bottomed gals will... |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Lonesome EJ Date: 19 Jul 08 - 05:56 PM Here's Spinal Tap Live with at least 12 bass players. And on the bass... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: kendall Date: 19 Jul 08 - 04:46 PM Nancy, thanks for that reminder. It needs repeating from time to time. KT, my friend, if Bobert won't have you, I sure as hell will! Jacqui and I have been practicing "Old Salt". As Far as this electric instrument and amps stuff goes, as that English actress, Mrs Patrick Campbell said, "I don't care what they do, as long as they don't do it in the street and frighten the horses." |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Bobert Date: 19 Jul 08 - 04:27 PM Well, yeah, I'd love to have KT in the band but ynless she's either been sleepin' in boxcars or pickin' cotton in Mississippi since she last auditioned I don't reckon that the next one will be any different and if there's one thing thatr would give me a $5 case of the blues is to have to fire her twice in one life time... Sho nuff would... Kazoo??? Does it have an electric pickup on it??? Spinal Tap??? Big Bottom??? I ain't heared it but I like that old song "Fat Bottom Girls (You Make the World Go Round)" That the smae song??? If so, why not??? It ain't blues but what the heck??? B~ |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Amos Date: 19 Jul 08 - 04:21 PM Madame, that was no bango! That were a catarrh! A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Genie Date: 19 Jul 08 - 04:13 PM Sorry. I meant to say Amos isn't bad on the "bnajo," either. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Genie Date: 19 Jul 08 - 04:09 PM Bobert, I play a mean kazoo (and I'll have it with me -- 'bout the only size instrument it's safe to travel with by air these days). Glad to help out wit' yer blues band if needed. I can do backup singing too. Oh, and Amos plays a MEAN "guiatr." (Not bad on the bnago, either.) ; D |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Nancy King Date: 19 Jul 08 - 03:50 PM I'm glad to see there's so much enthusiasm here, and that so many of you will be with us! Looks like it will be a great Getaway! Not that we've ever had a bad one... I do need to point out that we are still in the planning stages, program-wise. We've got lots of good ideas, and now we're in the process of winnowing down the list and figuring out who should lead what. It's more complicated than it seems on the surface -- we need to consider who will be there, and their preferences, as well as time constraints and "balance" (in regard to content AND people) in the program. At this point, VERY few things are definite. Please keep in mind that the Getaway is not just a Mudcat gathering. It is -- and has been for well over 40 years now -- the Folklore Society of Greater Washington's annual weekend. There are many FSGW folks who come regularly and participate actively, who are not on Mudcat. We need to be in touch with them, too. So, the three of us on the Program Committee (me, Carly, and Lorraine) have been contacting a lot of people by phone, PM, and email to find out if they're coming this year and what they'd like to do, and we haven't heard back yet from quite a few of them. (Not to mention the fact that we're having a little trouble with communication among ourselves...) So the potential for confusion is pretty high. Please don't assume that everything that's been suggested will actually end up on the schedule! We'll try to fit in as much as we can, taking into consideration the ideas mentioned in this thread, our own -- er -- creations, and ideas from non-Mudcatters. That said, I can definitely promise it will be great! Y'all come! Nancy |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Lonesome EJ Date: 19 Jul 08 - 02:18 PM Dueling bassists, huh? Maybe we need to work up Spinal Tap's Big Bottom. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Bill D Date: 19 Jul 08 - 02:15 PM Kendall & I can do duet sneering from the sidelines...what's a good key? |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: GUEST,dani Date: 19 Jul 08 - 01:46 PM KT for sure, but ain't I a woman? I'd love to sing with you, and her, if you'll have me! Dani |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Amos Date: 19 Jul 08 - 01:29 PM HEy, Bobez, whyncha persuade KT to give it a try? A |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Dan Schatz Date: 19 Jul 08 - 12:25 PM Maybe an Old Time songs workshop? We have often had old timey workshops that were, in essence, jam sessions - but Old Time Songs could also include unaccompanied ballads, solo pieces and others, as well as the stringband music that's so much fun to jam on. Also historical songs - that's always fun. And since we're in October, I like the ghoulies and ghosties idea. I'd say train songs, but something tells me that'll be pretty well covered in a Utah Phillips workshop. (Last night I was playing "Casey Jones" - the "good old rounder but he's dead and gone" version - and my 14 month old son kept going "Choo! Choo!" every time the word "train" came up.) Dan |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Charley Noble Date: 19 Jul 08 - 11:21 AM There will be a C. Fox Smith workshop, according to my PM from Nancy, and I think I'd like it to be a demonstration of how some of her nautical poems have been adapted for singing from different corners of this wide world. It may be a very small group, but maybe interest will build. I'd like to know in advance if anyone else is prepared to lead one of her songs. I have lots of songs I can lead and lots of background on her life but that's not my favorite kind of workshop. I'd much rather provide bits of background in the context of a particular poem. And I'll certainly prepare a handout. I know Bat Goddess leads "Race of Long Ago." Are there others? There is a discography of recorded C. Fox Smith poems I've prepared which is available on the C. Fox Smith perma thread. Or I can send it to anyone who PM's me. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Bobert Date: 19 Jul 08 - 10:09 AM Okay, first of all, my bad!!! When I was PNM's about participation I assumed that I was needed to facilitate the blues workshop... I have since learned that my buddy, Roger from Baltimore, had been asked so I "if I am nominated, I will nopt run and if I am elected I will not serve..." There... That oughtta take care of that little buziness... As for the band: LJ on harmonica JimmyT on Bass (yes, bring a small amp) Amos on lead guiatr Bobert on guitars and vocals Anyone else want in??? We could use a woman and maybe someone with non-musical disabilities for diversity... Maybe a leftie... No, not politics, gol danged it... Left handed... Oh, if Gutbucketeer is coming, he's also on bass... Bobert |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Bill D Date: 19 Jul 08 - 09:34 AM (I've often wondered whether, if we advertised a "talking, debating, explaining and joke telling workshop", they would come and sing continuously.) |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Genie Date: 19 Jul 08 - 03:15 AM Dick G, "I try to provide a minimum of talk and a maximum of music ... " Wow! What a concept! ; D |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Genie Date: 19 Jul 08 - 03:13 AM Gawd, Severn, with all those horrible puns, are you sure you're not related to my (recently departed) father? LOL That would make us kin, I guess. Oh, well, I guess I know what I'm "in fer" in taking up your offer of floor or couch space. ; D (I'll try to keep the groans down to a minimum.) Genie |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Lonesome EJ Date: 19 Jul 08 - 02:27 AM jimmy, I'm open to it! |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: dick greenhaus Date: 18 Jul 08 - 01:15 PM Ok- For thems what's innarested--- My Roots workshop is simply my attempt to use recordings to present the kind of material that people like Pete Seeger and Martin Carthy and Ewan MacColl learned from. I try to provide a minimum of talk and a maximum of music, and to present a really broad sweep of what folk music was before it became pop. I've played music from chain gangs, gypsies, early blues artists, spiritual choirs, gospel groups, sailors and whatever. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Severn Date: 18 Jul 08 - 10:55 AM Dick, I, at least, have always enjoyed the yearly musical lectures that make up your annual (verging on perennial) Roots workshop. Some uninitiated readers though, might come to the conclusion based on posts upscroll that the term "Roots Workshop" would indicate some sort of "Beet Generation" oriented affair, an excuse to sing all their favorite Irish famine laments, or even a New Age way way to get in touch with one's "inner-tuber" and and might not bother to turnip or carrot all. You might want to tell the uninformed what kind of roots-for-the- home-team that the always-worthy workshop actually consists of. |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Severn Date: 18 Jul 08 - 10:19 AM Would it be a hurried-y gurdy if you have to rush to complete it? SINSULL, if you feel you must be rosin to the occaision to answer the crank call of the siren song of Dick's hurdy gurdy, we'd love to see what you create, and we hope it'll be up and running and giving chase by Getaway time. And of course, the more people that bring their own similar instruments, the easier it will be to bill the tribute as "Live At Gurdy's Folk City". Imagine a whole herd o' gurdies! That might even sell a live CD of the proceedings and establish a market for our "local legend" in Greenwich Village for it. But then again, maybe not...... |
Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: jimmyt Date: 18 Jul 08 - 10:15 AM EJ!!! Is it possible that we may reunite with Bobert for another jam? I can't wait! jimmyt |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: SINSULL Date: 18 Jul 08 - 09:29 AM I will see if I can build a hurdy-gurdy in time. Count me in. |

Subject: RE: Getaway 2008 Program Planning From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 18 Jul 08 - 09:14 AM Refresh. I am sure the FSGW folks are still open to more ideas. Big RiB |
