"What was that terrible western film where the hero had a banjo with a hidden shotgun or such in the neck? There was also some bad chili-eating."

From by Skivee...

Actually I remember as a kid watching one of the famous TV cowboys who had a rifle hidden in a guitar.

The Antonio Banderas film, "Desperado," carries this concept to extremes.

Part of Woody Guthrie's legend is the inscription on his guitar, "This machine kills fascists." I guess if you had a guitar like that, you wouldn't need to hide a weapon in it.

I'm thinking of putting an inscription on my computer, "This machine kills time."

I hated the kids on the schoolbus. I carried my violin back and forth to school every day. Every day one of them had to make some stupid joke about my case holding a machine gun ala La Cosa Nostra! Idjits!

The Supreme Court gave that bad-ass guitar player the right to have the
gun. Or maybe he was just a bad guitar player, and needed a defense against his critics. Were the barrels of the shotgun the fret board? Well, I, for one, am not going to fret about it.

I'd like to shoot the guy who recommended the piccolo player as a good choice who played off key at the church last Sunday, he was damned to hell by the pastor who hired him & was nearly lynched by the congregation. Devil's music he was playing, God awful.

I would just like to note that I still have not found the film/ program that had the banjo with the gun.
I should think that all the banjo players in the Mudcat braintrust would have this clip at their fingertips; at the very least as a balm aginst all the lame banjo jokes.

"What was that terrible western film where the hero had a banjo with a hidden shotgun or such in the neck? There was also some bad chili-eating."

Where can I get one (a banjo with a shotgun in the neck not a bad chili)? Very useful for dealing with banjo player abuse which is rife in the British folk clubs!

Skivee, I think it may have been part of the Sabata Trilogy with Lee van Cleef. I saw a reference to that when I did a google search, in a review of something else at amazon.

I've seen that Western video, and it's definitely a banjo.   I had it bookmarked, but it's in an old computer that I can't get into right now.

In some cases, depending on the performer, the mere wielding of a guitar can cause people to run for the exits!

There's also The Fastest Guitar Alive (1967), which predates the "Sabata" films and features the legendary Roy Orbison as the guy who can pick a tune and shoot at Indians with the same instrument. Script is said to have been offered to Elvis, who took a pass, though it's still better than most of Elvis' late 60s pictures. The songs given to Orbison are, sadly, on a par with "Do the Clam."

I think that was the instrument for which "Dueling Banjos" was written.

In my early years when I played the banjo (now there's the sort of confession you'd normally on get on the psychiatrist's couch)I spent hours trying to play Eric Wiseberg's Flop Eared Mule and ended up wanting to shoot myself.

Wasn't it Son of Paleface with Bob Hope

I think Roy Rogers & Trigger was in it

And Roy shot Jane Russells bosoms with it

The desert bit with the penguins was good - I think he sang that famous song - something & bows

Then the umbrella escape from the chasing Indians

Painless Potter

BTW, Ross, there was a 1960s film called The Tenth Victim, in which Ursula Andress shot and killed a guy with guns disguised as her bikini bra.

Wow - cheers for that

I knew/my Mum said bras were dangerous

& cheers for the buttons - it came to me later

I see it has it's own thread now

Of course Roy Rogers also sang that classic

A four legged friend, a four legged friend
He'll never let you down

Must be a parody out there

I had a friend , ex-Royal Navy ( HMS Protector ) ,who lost a leg when a hawser snapped. I used to annoy him by singing ;

"He's honest and faithful ,right up to the end,

    that wonderful four,three,two, one-legged friend ! "

    He didn't like it.

Getting back to the point of the thread (sorry)---
I believe there was /is a character called Piotr, in the Alastair Mclean novel " Force Ten From Navarone " ( as usual, Great book--Crap movie ),who has a gun concealed within a guitar.
