Subject: RE: Obit: Ronnie Drew died From: Seán Báite Date: 16 Aug 08 - 01:29 PM Was only a matter of time, I suppose, the poor man has been fighting that dirty hoor C..... for some time now. I learn this at the same time as learning that Dublin have been unceremoniously dumped out of the All Ireland and half the country is under flood waters again.. It's getting like the Book of Revelation. He'll be re-united with Luke Kelly by now - wherever they send fellas with beards and unforgettable voices.. probably on the right hand side of Elvis. Here are a couple of 'breaking news' reports on his passing away : Irish TV website Irish Times website |

Subject: RE: Obit: Ronnie Drew died (16 Aug 2008) From: Marc Bernier Date: 16 Aug 08 - 07:19 PM Oh my Goodness! What a Shame. Just this morning, about 2am EDT, I'd gotten home from a gig and put in a DVD my wife had gotten from the library, the Borstal Boy. Ronnie Drew makes a cameo appearance at the end of the movie, and I was wondering how he was doing. He is certainly missed. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Ronnie Drew died (16 Aug 2008) From: Gulliver Date: 16 Aug 08 - 09:24 PM By a strange quirk of fate I was playing in a session in O'Donoghue's (where the Dubliners started all those years ago) this afternoon when the news filtered through that Ronnie had passed away. That threw a pallor over proceedings, but we pressed on and did a few songs that Ronnie sang. About six o'clock in came John Sheehan (fiddler with the Dubliners), and after a chat he joined the session, playing on the tin whistle a few of the pieces that he had composed himself. Afterwards he told us that he had been with Ronnie last weekend, and everything seemed OK, but Ronnie got a dose of pneumonia (or something similar, not sure yet) during the week, to which he succumbed. Seeing John playing away there, surrounded by all the photos of the Dubliners over the years, was magic, despite the sadness. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Don |

Ronnie Drew played a huge role in making the Dubliners special, and I am grateful to have caught them at their peak, when Luke and Ciaran were also alive. Among the many impressive words left here, I was especially moved by yours, Eric, and I hope you do not mind that I have repeated them in my own small tribute at Salut! "A voice that would blow the froth off Guiness at 50 yds", and "it sounds like coke, been crushed under a door" Sums up the wonderful voice of Ronnie I think. When I first met him many years ago, I addressed him as Mr Drew, shaking my hand he simply said, its Ronnie to my friends. RIP Ronnie. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ronnie Drew died (16 Aug 2008) From: Big Tim Date: 17 Aug 08 - 09:51 AM Three years ago, Frank Harte gave me RD's address and I wrote to him (a song enquiry). 'Hello Ronnie' I said, 'I didn't expect you to phone me'. 'Well', he said, 'I don't go in for them fuckin oul emails or faxes'! A great voice and a great man. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Ronnie Drew died (16 Aug 2008) From: GUEST,Slowalan Date: 18 Aug 08 - 08:55 AM I recall a party at the Christchurch Folk Festival New Zealand about 1975. Dubliners were the star act, so we were a bit in awe of them...but then they were the first to arrive and the last to leave.... They had no tickets on themselves, great guys, played and sang all bloody night..we had to carry Luke out. Dubliners and the Clancy's...never will be forgotten by anyone who loves the music RIP Ronnie. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Ronnie Drew died (16 Aug 2008) From: irishenglish Date: 18 Aug 08 - 02:08 PM Sad. Just 3 or 4 years ago, Ronnie was doing a show here in NY at the Irish Arts Center. Most nights after the show, Ronnie and entourage would stop in my local, just up the block from IAC. Here in the city you get used to seeing celebrities of all types-movies, music, tv, etc, so we do the look-oh, that's so and so, then go back to doing what we're doing. At this pub there is a bar/restaurant, and a hallway that leads out to a back garden, and its where the bathrooms are. So I'm getting used to seeing Ronnie there, and one night I'm coming out of the bathroom, and the door comes flying out, narrowly averting Ronnie heading out to the garden with a cup of tea. Of course I get horrified, oh I'm so sorry, are you ok, I didn't get you did I? Ronnie is completely unfazed, says-ah you're grand, no problem, then tells me he's seen me hanging out, and since I look very Irish (red hair, beard), tells me to be sure to come to the show, and asks me where in Ireland I'm from! Well, I never made it to the show, but what a decent man. Here's to ya Ronnie! |
Subject: RE: Obit: Ronnie Drew died (16 Aug 2008) From: Fliss Date: 18 Aug 08 - 02:49 PM Dubliners on Radio Caroline in late 1960's one of my first introductions to Irish music. In 2000 I found a Dubliners CD in the local Coop... and set my love of their music off again. Never saw them in their heyday, but saw them - minus Barney and of course Ronnie in 2000 at Birmingham Symphony Hall. Ace evening. Saw them again plus Jim and Ronnie at Dudley some time later... c 2003. Again an excellent evening. God Bless Ronnie. |
