Subject: Tá mé ag cuartú na bhfocal seo From: Áine Date: 04 Jun 99 - 04:53 PM A chairde – Tá mé ag cuartú na bhfocal seo thíos. Fuair mé iad sa leabhar 'Na Rosa Go Brách' le Fionn Mac Cumhaill (nó Mánas Mac Cumhaill). An bhfuil duine agaibh ar bith ábalta aithint an t-amhrán? A phlúr na maighdean is úire gné Fuair cliú le scéimhe ón Ádhamhchlainn A chúl na bpéarla, a rún na héigse A dhúblas féile is fáilte A ghnúis mar ghréin le dúscadh an lae A mhúchfadh léan le gáire 'Sé mo chumhaidh gan mé . . . |
Subject: RE: Tá mé ag cuartú na bhfocal seo From: Philippa Date: 04 Jun 99 - 05:08 PM Mo náire thu, a Áine, ag baint úsaid as generic thread title! Sílim go bhfuil an t-amhrán sin ar cheirnín de chuid Daithí Sproule agus John Kelly. Déanfaidh mé iarracht tuilleadh eolais a fháil. |
Subject: RE: Tá mé ag cuartú na bhfocal seo From: Philippa Date: 04 Jun 99 - 05:26 PM Tá mé ag smaoineadh air "Cul Tiubh na bPearlai" ar "Traditional Music of Ireland" (agus ar "Is It Yourself") le James Kelly, Paddy O'Brien, & Daithi Sproule. Shanachie SH 34014 Can anyone listen to this album and see if the words of Cul Tiubh na bPearlai match those given by Áine? The tune would suit them all right. |
Subject: Úr-Chnoc Chéin Mhic Cáinte From: Philippa Date: 04 Jun 99 - 05:49 PM It's the famous Úr-Chnoc Chéin Mhic Cáinte ! |
Subject: RE: Tá mé ag cuartú na bhfocal seo From: Annraoi Date: 04 Jun 99 - 09:45 PM Tut, tut, a Philippa, Cá bhfuil an chuid eile de shaothar Uí Dhoirnín ? Annraoi |
Subject: RE: Tá mé ag cuartú na bhfocal seo From: Philippa Date: 05 Jun 99 - 06:06 AM I think you'll have to look in books, Annraoi. The site only gives one Ó Doirnín poem. The biographical info. (i mBearla) is here: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Forum/1813/peadar.htm If I find a better site, I'll return with the details. |
Subject: RE: Tá mé ag cuartú na bhfocal seo From: Philippa Date: 05 Jun 99 - 06:36 AM Tá "Mná na hÉireann", amhrán eile le Peadar Ó Dóirnín, le fáil ag leathanacha idirlín eile. Perhaps I'll add a thread for that song sometime soon; Michael Davitt made a translation. |
Subject: RE: Tá mé ag cuartú na bhfocal seo From: Áine Date: 07 Jun 99 - 08:17 AM A Phillipa, Go raibh míle maith agat! Nach an-ghlic an chailín thú! Agus gabh mo leithscéal fán 'generic thread title' – ach cad é a bheinn a dhéanamh, mar ní raibh a fhios agam ar an tideal? -- Áine |
Subject: Lyr Add: ÚR-CHNOC CHÉIN MHIC CÁINTE (O Doirnin) From: Philippa Date: 01 Jul 99 - 10:46 AM 1)Below are the lyrics copied from the website for which you'll find links above. 2. I finally listened to the recording of "Cúl Tiubh na bPéarlaí" as sung by Daithi Sproule. Both the words and the air are completely different to Úr-Chnoc Chéin Mhic Cáinte. The lyrics are in Einrí O Muigheasa: "Dhá Chéad de Cheoltaibh Uladh"; perhaps I'll type them out some time. My memory was playing tricks with me when I first saw Aine's request, because the tune I tried her words too was the tune of Úr-Chnoc..., but I thought it was the tune of Cúl Tiubh... 3. I did submit "Mná na hEireann"; it's in another thread. Úr-Chnoc Chéin Mhic Cáinte (Peadar O Doirnin)
A phlúr na maighdean is úire gné,
Táim brúite i bpéin, gan suan, gan néal

Subject: RE: Tá mé ag cuartú na bhfocal seo From: Annraoi Date: 01 Jul 99 - 03:24 PM a Philippa, An bhfuil cúpla ceathramhin fágtha ar lár agat ? Annraoi |
Subject: RE: Tá mé ag cuartú na bhfocal seo From: Annraoi Date: 01 Jul 99 - 03:27 PM Gabh mo leithscéal. Bhí mé ró-ghasta. Ní fonn traidisiúnta atá leis na foclaí ach guth a chum Peadar Ó Dubhda mar bhí sé dubh-dóite leis an ghuth sheanchaite a chuirtí leis an dán. Annraoi |

Subject: RE: Tá mé ag cuartú na bhfocal seo From: GUEST,Neil Comer Date: 15 Feb 00 - 12:20 PM Philippa, Dúirt tú ansin gur chum Peadar Ó Doirnín amhrán arb ainm dó, Mná na hÉireann. Cá bhfuair tú an t-eolas seo? |
Subject: RE: Tá mé ag cuartú na bhfocal seo From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 15 Feb 00 - 07:17 PM Niall, I don't remember where I first learned that Ó Doirnín composed "Mná na hÉireann", but you could try one of the anthologies cited in the Mná na hÉireann thread. I just did a quick web search and found references to authorship in Kate Bush and Sinead O'Connor |
Skjora/Magpie |
Subject: Úr-Chnoc Chéin Mhic Cáinte From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 21 May 00 - 04:28 AM It seems my memory was not so bad concerning Daithí Sproule; I HAD heard him sing Úr-Chnoc Chéin Mhic Cáinte , but not on the recording I have at home. I heard him sing the song again today as Áine Hensey played the recording on Béal Maidine on Radio na Gaeltachta. Perhaps you can hear this on the internet? It was at the end of the first hour of the programme, near 8 am local summer time. Magpie, we mostly use English for out internet discussions, but it's nice to see some other languages too. Some threads which might interest you include Scandinavian sites Any Norwegians Irländsk festival |

Subject: Cul Tiubh na bPearlai From: GUEST,Kaihl Date: 20 Mar 05 - 01:20 AM Hello! I was wondering if anyone knew the lyrics to Cul Tiubh na bPearlai performed by Daithi Sproule. I think it is a beautiful song, and would like the lyrics. I don't speak or read Gaelic yet, but I would much appreciate it if you could give me the lyrics in Gaelic and in English for future use. Much thanks! |
