Subject: RE: BS: Top 10 Obama and McCain songs From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 18 Aug 08 - 01:05 PM I listened to all of Obama's list the other day. The man has a bit of a dark streak. Gimmie Shelter is one of my favorite songs. But putting it on a list like that sends a message, In fact, five of the ten songs, 1. Ready or Not Fugees 2. What's Going On Marvin Gaye 4. Gimme Shelter Rolling Stones 5. Sinnerman Nina Simone 8. Think Aretha Franklin in my opinion, have strong social messages. Its a very interesting list. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 10 Obama and McCain songs From: Donuel Date: 18 Aug 08 - 01:21 PM McCain has in fact been using the theme song from Rocky at his rallies. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 10 Obama and McCain songs From: Wesley S Date: 18 Aug 08 - 01:33 PM I notice there isn't a single fiddle or banjo tune in the bunch. So much for the Mudcat constituency. Just once I'd like to see a candidate pick "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 10 Obama and McCain songs From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 18 Aug 08 - 01:41 PM I'll bet if Obama has heard the Carolina Chocolate Drops he'd like them. Not that Ricky Skaggs ain't good. But the Drops are hipper. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 10 Obama and McCain songs From: PoppaGator Date: 18 Aug 08 - 01:56 PM Last week's NPR story about this started out asking "Which candidiate submitted whch song list?" and then played two sets of ten brief sound clips. They were not played in the order shown above. The first song they played for the second set was "Yes I Can," Obama's campaign song, making it way too easy to guess. And if that wasn't enough, following up with "What's Going On" should have been even more of a giveaway. Both candidiates listed one (and only one) Frank Sinatra number. Hmmm, interesting... Any significance to which Old-Blue-Eyes song each candidate chose? |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 10 Obama and McCain songs From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 18 Aug 08 - 02:26 PM McCain's Sinatra choice was a lot more conventional and melodic. Obama's more brash and brassy. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 10 Obama and McCain songs From: Donuel Date: 18 Aug 08 - 03:02 PM Time for a Change great song by the great doctor from New Orleans. Its about the disgust for Bush murder and hopeful thoughts for Obama. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 10 Obama and McCain songs From: Bert Date: 18 Aug 08 - 03:31 PM I'm surprised that McCain didn't get "My Get Up and Go has Got up and Went" for one of his. |

Subject: RE: BS: Top 10 Obama and McCain songs From: Wesley S Date: 18 Aug 08 - 03:50 PM Because I expected all of the answers to belong in the BS section. It may have a basis in music - but in application it's all BS and politics. |
Subject: RE: BS: Top 10 Obama and McCain songs From: Ebbie Date: 18 Aug 08 - 07:17 PM Isn't it for sure that the candidates themselves created their list? It sounds as though they could be staffers' ideas. All I konw is that it would be hard for me to choose my 10 favo(u)rite songs. Harder yet to find the time to do it. It doesn't seem likely that either of them has that much free time. |

Subject: RE: BS: Top 10 Obama and McCain songs From: GUEST,Jack the Sailor Date: 18 Aug 08 - 08:30 PM Obama's choices are certainly partly to get people thinking and pulling up the songs. McCain's 3 and 4 seem to be about the campaign. |
