I've heard this several times but can't commit it to memory, the bit I can reliably ( sic) recall goes

Somewhere down the road
Someone waits for me

Anyone got any more?

I haven't confirmed it yet, but I think you mean 'Somewhere Along the Road' written by Rick Kemp of Steeleye Span and recorded on several occasions by his wife Maddy Prior. The words might be on Maddy's website.

SOMEWHERE ALONG THE ROAD
(Rick Kemp)

Somewhere along the road
Someone waits for me
Beyond these present storms that blow
Waiting patiently
No secrets held in an open heart
A spirit that soars over mountains
Somewhere along the road
Someone waits for me

Somehow a guiding light
Always shows the way
To those who lose their way by night
Searching for the day
A day away from happiness
Tomorrow will bring a new sunrise
Somewhere along the road
Someone waits for me

Sometimes when winds are still
Unexpectedly
Perhaps beyond these silent hills
A voice will call to me
Raise your eyes to see my world
Raise your voice and sing out
Somewhere along the road
Someone waits for me
Someone waits for me

I hope this is accurate-it's what I sing anyway. One of my favourites.

Bloody brilliant song that one is, we did it years ago at a friends wedding. I have two diffrent recordings of it and have heard a third. The version I like the best is the original one from "Maddy Prior and the Answers". It is on a compilation CD caleed "The Gold Collection" of English Folk Music, which is a really good double set, it is also on "Year" I think. This is the only song that I can play on the piano, not with the gear change unfortunately. If you like this one try to find Deep in the Darkest Night, you will probably like that one too. JohnB

I think that Maddy Prior and June Tabor have a recording of it on their second "Silly Sisters" album "No More To The Dance", which might be still available, if you search the right places (Topic TSCD 449). A fine recording of two fine singers collaborating, and augmenting each other. The First "Silly Sisters" (Chrysalis CHR 1101) is also good.

Cheers,

I believe this was written by Rick Kemp who is Maddy Prior's husband, and thus ought to be attributed as such.

"Somewhere Along the Road" - Maddy Prior / Steeleye Span

Tune, required for a correspondant. I would estimate ABC is a bit specialist, however any reference would suffice.

I have found tan MP3 site http://database.cd/i21127e14/ but I don't think that is what is wanted.

Any Ideas anyone?

If you don't do ABC, you can convert this to standard notation by copying the WHOLE thing given above (from the letter X right down to the the final bracket) into the Tune-o-Tron converter at www.concertina.net.
See: http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html
Just paste it into the window there, hit submit, and up will come the notation score. (Magic!) Then if you ask for the PDF version, you'll get it in even better quality to print/save. It's free and you don't have to be a concertina player or log into the site to use it. I use it a lot, and much appreciate the facility.

Joe, I don't think that's right, although I concede that it's similar in parts. At home on a holiday CD anthology, I have a recording of a song with exactly the same tune as Kemp's. I'll get you that info when I can, together with whatever background is offered on the liner notes (if any). I don't know offhand if the other song is older or newer.
This next, I can tell you with a fair degree of authority due to having heard Ms. Prior introduce the song in concert with this anecdote: Rick Kemp wrote SAtR one foggy or stormy night when one or the other of them was very late returning to their mutual home from a gig, via a twisty, hilly road that required very careful navigation. I believe Mr Kemp was the waiter rather than the driver and wrote it to keep himself from worrying about her, but am not entirely sure. (It was a long time ago.) At any rate by the time whoever was driving finally arrived home, the song was finished. So although it sounds very religious in tone, what it is about is that one of the couple was, literally, waiting somewhere along the (obscured by weather) road for the other to return.

I first heard it sung by the Scottish group, Sangsters, many moons ago, and then sought out the words and found the various versions Maddy Prior recorded. (And yes, Rick Kemp was correctly attributed as composer.) Maddy's earlier version was in a higher key than the later one.
A friend suggested that we mix it with "Da Slockit Light", lovely fiddle tune by Tom Anderson, and that works pretty well, using part of it as an instrumental break. The song and the tune have the common theme of "guiding light" after all.

The same-tuned song "The Burning Babe" (poem by Robert Southwell, setting by Mike Hockenhull), which I have in Free Reed's "Midwinter" CD anthology, was credited as "tune adapted from Maddy Prior's 'Somewhere Down the Road'" (both items of misinformation very much sic). The liner notes clearly needed a good copyedit, though the compilation—all 4 CDs of it—is actually quite good.
So no light shed there on the tune's origin, Joe. But I think its resemblance to "Nearer My God to Thee," though admittedly striking in the first few bars, is pure happenstance. It doesn't hold up as the song continues.

I am finding it difficult to learn the tune for this song. I think the reason is, that I easily get it mixed up with "Nearer My God to thee."
So, it's frustrating. I am not as good at distinguishing Tunes, as I would like to be.
