Subject: Name ten famous Belgians!
From: Steve Parkes
Date: 10 Jun 99 - 08:13 AM

In the Uk we have a great party game called, well, "name ten famous Belgians". I've mentioned this in a couple of threads in the past, and I thought it was time I brought it to the attention of the world at large.

Oh, if you're from Belgium, remember that they have to be famous outside Belgium! I suppose you could play "name ten famous Poles"? (Marie and Pierre Curie count as one!)

If anyone knows any famous Belgians, pass them on to the rest of us. And yes, I can name ten myself, but I'm not going to!

Steve

Steve, at least you should have restricted it to music, when I start thinking of sports and politics, this is getting too easy.

So here's my singer/songwriter from Belgium: Jacques Brel

Well, There's always King Albert I (of the Congo scandles) - That is assuming that monarchs are allowed. Then there's Herge (spelling?) The chap who wrote the Tin-Tin Stories (and on the same tack) wasn't one of the pair that invented Asterix Belgian? There's the bloke that wrote the "Maigrait" books (I can't remember his name) Atnd then there's one the Belgians always want to forget, Leon DeGrelle, the commander of the Walloon Legion of the SS during the occupation. Do any of those count?

I looked it up: Belgium has alone 11 winners of the Tour de France. Well, I could have named only two of them (Eddy..., Lucien..., but there are several other famous cyclists (Rick van..., Rick van..., Michel...), a couple of fine football players, at least one good runner and once world record holder (Gaston...), a world class speed skater (Bart..., well, he's Dutch, but he starts now for Belgium). Once you start thinking, it is only a question of finding the category and then the names came rolling in. And with the recent food scandal in Belgium, we even know the name of the prime minister...

Seymour Glick is a character created by Steve Allen (Steverino for all you old fans out there). What it has to do with Belgium is a mystery to me (we await catspaw's revelation). By the way, I see that they have banned Belgian chocolate today. These people are going to starve to death if beer is next.

Hay Rick, I didn't realize I was explaining, perhaps just trying a bit more stablization. Please don't call me on this action before the secretariat as I have already affirmed my intentions and issue this post as a citation to the rest of you for tolerating me, here at Mudcat. Hopefully this will all whirlaway as a slew of tripe. I mean, we might as well be pleasant instead of ruffians. As you are the "pickin" leader, so to speak, I will take your advice as I am always in your dust Commander.

I rather like the greeny-bluey thing myself, but if you check out the HTML (right-click on the page then select VIEW SOURCE), you'll see it says color=red. I don't understand all this clever stuff, myself.

Glad you're having a good time, by the way; how much trouble are you having spelling "Jo"? By the way, did you know that chips (with/without fish) is your actual Belgian take-away?

khatspaugh-- Your unfettered wit shows you're a winner who knows his place. As a mudder you give no quarter when it comes to puns. You're a real stud who always pulls his weight, and most of the time I must admit your humor is right on track.

However, I worry that if you keep lunging at the off side of these jokes, the folks in philly may not like the tack you're taking and your reputation will suffer. This could cost you dearly, you could end up in hock, get depressed and just foal apart. I would hate to see that happen.

Though it's clear you don't need anyone's help to kick up your heels, I humbly offer my support with puns (and I'm not just saying that to curry your favor). Draw nigh, catspaw- we'd make a great team! Don't stall, though, hurry and respond because my offer won't last furlong...

So if I get stuck, I'll lunge at your offer. But when you have suggestions hold your hands high. No sense mucking about. It can be annoying having good puns and not being able to use them, kinda' like a boil that won't heal...So don't hold those chestnuts at bay or that sorrel never clear up.

I'm surprised no-one mentioned Belgian's most famous Flemish folk group, their answer to Peter, Paul and Mary (or Peter Paul & Rubens as they call them over there):
Hertz van Rental and his wife Avis and her brother Kenning van Hire.[who can forget "Two Lips from Rotterdam"; "Up in a balloon with a Walloon"; "Son of a barge" and many other hits]
Sorry,Steve. I held out for a few days!
I compiled a pub quiz round on famous Belgians once and managed to find enough for two rounds but a lot were from before the modern state.

I received two beers, an Adidas bag, and a used junior Golf trophy with ny name written on it in magic marker stating I was "high scorer in finals '92." Upon missing the name of Dick Turpin's Horse (I said:....uhhh, Black Beauty?) I completed an 0 for 10 round and received dirty looks from my team-mates! Thank God I got a radio show and haven't had to embarrass myself anymore.

Rick,
I compiled an annual Christmas Quiz held in various London pubs over the years for a professional group I was on the Committee of. I retired as the oldest inhabitant a couple of years ago when I realised I'd done 20 years on the committee and 10 annual quizzes! There were youngsters coming along who have carried it on.
I tried "jazz/blues nicknames" for one round one year (Wingy Manone etc), only to find one team had a fan like me)who got them all right!
Then there was the year when the pub muzak (just before it was turned off for us to start) played a tune that answered one of the questions...Since then I've helped She-who-must-be-obeyed, who is a Churchwarden, with a quiz for the local church social but otherwise hung up my gavel. As my responses to threads amply demonstrate, I realised I knew less about the things I thought I knew something about than I thought I did! Roger

Englishman again, a bit more alarmed: Help! I'm sinking, Does anyone one hear me?

German (Thick accent): Ya, Vee hear you, Vat are you sinking about?

I think this one might best be called "Sybil Creep" in as much as the original thread may still exist, but there are four or five others running concurrently and they seem to be paying no attention to the rest. French 'kiss' = baiser which can also mean something far more, er,...
Perhaps it's the same root. Ahem. Whilst in linguistic mode (or something)capote anglaise is an interesting translation - or does that belong on Catpaw's thread of a while back?

A Belgian was going to Calais for his holidays but after he'd crossed the border into France he started seeing signs saying 'Pas de Calais' so he went back home...

Well, you started it.
Jo, who has not baiser'd any Frenchmen (lately) - though they do say it's a great way to learn a language, wonder if Black Country counts? X

This has gone way beyond thread creep, more like pulling on a loose thread of a Hong Kong suit, and being left with a handkerchief. Or it has mutated into the realms superstring theory (the 13+ dimensional universe beloved of current cosmological theory).

Speaking of records. Does anybody make vinel any more? I put a record on the other day, and enjoyed every scratch.

There is a great movie that came out of Canada, called Harmony Cats. The story is about this high and mighty vilon (sp? fiddle) player. The ocherasta went broke, so this guy had to take a job playing base guitar in a country and western band. Great movie, the most memorable part is when the band leader is unhappy with our hero. He tells him, "You remeber the old records, you could hear the scratches, well in my band, you can almost hear those scratches. Don't take them out of my band." It's the little mistakes, that make things human.

BTW this make a bizilion different topics for this thread. No problem, just store it in a Tardis. -F

Eddy Mercx: 5 times winner of the French Tour

Baekeland: inventor of Bakeliet which was the product necessited for the telephones
Rubens: Painter
Peter Piot: head of the UN Aids program
Hergé: designer from the Tintin-comics
Soeur Sourire: singer/songwriter "Dominique" (no.1hit in the USA)
Jean-Claude Van Damme: filmstar (?)

OK,I have to admit, Belgium is a really small country!that's a fact!
Maybe you know Adolf Sax? He invented that instrument(saxophone)and Jean Claude Van Dame (nothing to be proud of, but still, he is a Belgian!), and everybody forgets to mention Soulwax (of course!),Jacques Brel, René Magritte, Erik Van Looy (the director of 'de zaak altzheimer', he had the chance to win an oscar with this movie), Pieter Paul Rubens, jacques Rogge (I think he helps organizing the Olympic games or something like that), Guy Verhofstadt, hercule poirot (he's fictional, but who cares?).
PS: somebody asked what language Walloons speak. Well, they speak French, I am Flemish so I speak Flemish (dutch with an accent), and there are also people in Belgium who speak German.
