A lifetime of service to others with so many things that he will be remembered for.

Here's just a short quote lifted from the article linked below, it conveys my thoughts better than I can.

Paul Newman's craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all.

In my opinion, he was the finest actor of the last half of the twentieth century. He could take on any role and make it his own. That Paul Newman sparkle was evident in whatever part he played, but he became the character he portrayed.   He gave so much more off the screen. He made a difference in this world and used his celebrity for good.

Sad indeed. Has always been a hero to me. Met him very briefly when they filmed "Where the Money Is". When the props were torn down I took some of the material home as it was being thrown in a container. I kept one of the floor tiles he walked on. I know a silly thing to do. Any way, I think I'll dig it our and frame it.
Condolences to all his love ones.

Damn.

In December 1994, about a month before his 70th birthday, he told Newsweek magazine he had changed little with age.

"I'm not mellower, I'm not less angry, I'm not less self-critical, I'm not less tenacious," he said. "Maybe the best part is that your liver can't handle those beers at noon anymore," he said.

I am going to miss him as I am sure many others will. Condolences to his family and friends. What a beautiful legacy he left.

Oh! sob!

There is so much that can go on that subject line along with "actor." Newman in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Hud and Mr. & Mrs. Bridge and as Butch Cassidy and as Judge Roy Bean and Ben Quick - when he played a character, it stayed played, they broke the mold after him.

What he was doing with Newman's Own was so incredibly outstanding.

If the old adage of "they die in threes" comes to pass we will lose the biggest of the big soon. I hope not. To lose Newman and two of his peers is almost insupportable.

Been kinda' waiting for this one...........................***sigh***.....................and damnitalltohell............

What's been said.......and so much more. Did you know he got rid of all his dress clothes? Suits, tuxes, and the like.....He felt he'd earned the privilege to be comfortable and if someone didn't like it, "to hell with 'em."

This was one helluva' man. No one word or even groups of words could begin to give any real true picture of him. Probably the best actor of his generation, he brought truth to every role. His passion for everything made him excel at it all. If he got nuts for something, there were no half way measures. The "Hole in the Wall Gang" camps proved what a determined and passionate person can do for his fellow human beings. And he not only had HIS camps but aided others in starting similar camps such as the one in North Carolina, the "Victory Junction Gang Camp," set up through the efforts of Kyle and Patti Petty.

In every aspect of his life he was a shining example of what a person can be. He had an amazing energy, unbelievable talents, and a fire of passion which drove his life.

And btw.......In racing he was the same way. For someone who didn't start til age 43 he was a better than average driver. When he started he raced as "P.L.Newman" and did so with no fanfare. I raced at several of the SCCA events he did at Watkins Glen, Elkhart Lake, and Nelson Ledges. He always seemed to revel in just being one of the guys and had you not known who he was you would never have suspected. When he partnered with Carl Haas on the pro level, they were sorta' unlikely as a partnership, but the success of Newman-Haas Racing left no question about the venture. He took a GT1 car out for a few laps last year and turned decent times..............yeah, I'll miss him.

Ah, jeez, Spaw...I clicked on the picture with the article and found the following...made me cry all over, again, what a class act and so well-loved, as well as so loving. I am really glad he got that last lap:

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Lime Rock Park was closed down for an hour and
half today to honor Paul Newman. He was attended
by his family, close friends, Skip Barber, mechanics
on his race team, and those who happened to be at
the track. PLN toured the track in his Corvette race
car with his Buick V8 powered Volvo station wagon
following. He had come to say goodbye. Diagnosed
with terminal cancer he is not expected to live beyond
September. Race driver, actor, humanitarian, family
man and friend, they did not come any better."

I met Mr Newman in NYC at a fundraising show for Eugene McCarthy. He was a very nice guy. Fame didn't go to his head. I was and still am a fan of the movie, "Hombre." He was great in that flick--in a Paul Newman way. Loved him in "The Sting" and "BCatSK". AND, his spaghetti sauce is darned good for jarred stuff. Another man done gone.

I have been in love with this man since the 1950s. At first, when he was being compared -- looks-wise and to a lesser extent acting-wise -- to Marlon Brando -- it was pretty much purely physical/sexual. But I've followed Paul's career, his bond with his wife, Joanne, and his passion for racing and his dedication to charitable work, for decades, and my admiration has grown and my devotion and respect deepened.
Joanne Woodward has said that when she first met Paul and he came on to her, she was very turned off, largely because he was so "pretty" and she did not like "pretty guys."   What was so apparent over the decades of Paul's career was that he was a helluva lot more than a "pretty" guy.   He was a truly BEAUTIFUL human being.
Consummate actor. Adventurous racer. Compassionate person dedicated to leaving this world a little better than he found it.

I miss you already, Paul. Sorely.

My sincere condolences to you, Joanne and Nell, and to the whole Newman family.

G

Almost every racing site on the net has some sort of note/tribute/obit on him. Even the NASCAR folks have a fine lead article and he was mentioned in the opening ceremonies at today's race in Kansas.

From the NASCAR article:

As he passed his 80th birthday, he remained in demand. He managed to combine acting with racing by providing the voice of a crusty 1951 car in the 2006 Disney-Pixar hit, Cars.

Johnson (Jimmie Johnson, two time and current NASCAR champ--Spaw) had the opportunity to interview him as part of a TV project he was working on. Johnson also took part in a day at a racetrack as part of the festivities leading to the premier of the animated feature.

He said they put the body of a Hudson Hornet -- the car that Newman portrayed as "Doc Hudson" in the movie -- on a stock-car frame and let him and others make laps in it.

"The only man on pit road with a stopwatch was Paul Newman," Johnson said. "He was timing the laps I was running, other guys were running. Then he got in that car that had no business, with that body especially, going around that track at speed, and he was trying to break the lap times that we were running out there with the school cars and stuff.

"You could see that spark in his eye. He had a true passion for motorsports in general. I would say more IndyCar and road racing, because that is what he came from. He was a great friend of Rick's (Rick Hendrick, Johnson's car owner--Spaw) and knew a lot more than people probably realize about NASCAR racing."

Racing folks know the passion he had and most knew he was a racer at heart and an actor by trade.

Spaw

The part I will always remember above all others is Paul Newman in "Hud". Simply riveting. He was sure a fine actor.

What a treat to be put on Richard Nixon's "enemies" list. ;-) A singular honor indeed!

I don't think of him as "dead" at all, I just think of him as not here anymore, and set free from an aging and worn out body. Let's celebrate Paul Newman, not mourn him.

Little Hawk,
I share your perspective on his not being "dead" but having been "set free from an aging and worn out body."   (I felt the same way when my dad left behind his 92-year-old, very deteriorated body a year ago.)

It is not the fact that Paul was here on earth "only" 83 years that saddens me. While I'd have loved for him to stick around for a few more films and races and more charity work, he left a great legacy during those years, and, it seems, he had a very full, rich, meaningful life. But I am always saddened when the 'departure' is a slow, painful one, as was the case with Newman's cancer.
