Christian Brothers (a kind of religious order for males -for those unaware) were generally percieved to be the leading proponents of this type of footwear in Ireland. At least this was the case in my schooldays, 1946 -58.

Socks with sandals on a man in shorts does nothing for him visually but if he is comfy then who should complain? Most men's feet generally are a turn off for me and a great many women's are far prettier. Perhaps if more men wore nail varnish?

I think naked feet in sandals look best but I am more interested in what is between a guy's ears than what he covers his feet in :-)

When you say the opposite genders don't like each other do you mean as partners only? Because I know lots of gay people who actually love the opposite gender but just don't want be with them in a relationship. Being gay is about loving the same gender not hating the opposite one I would hope?

The bigger question is why do a lot of men keep their socks on when stripped? lol

Are you filthy rich? It may be a factor? If so, even snowshoes in summer (with or wirhout socks or underwear, may not be such a big deal.

If you are are a biologist,an oceanographer, or a smarter-than-thou socialists whose income depends, in some way, on a government grant...it may not matter as much to some women seeking security, nature walks, and a good conversation.

But if you just wonder the beach with a metal detector, then it may matter to women....but not likely not to you.

Jeri, a subjective answer to your question. I wear socks with sandals sometimes because;
A/ I've had sunburned feet, and once is enough.
B/ My feet do get wet when walking on a hot day, and make sucking/farting noises when sockless. On the sandal, I haste to add.

I only wear sock/sandal combinations with long trousers, because I don't want my lily-white legs to get burned either. On the rare occasions that I wear shorts, I'm barefoot or in trainers, with socks.

As I said on the other thread on this topic, James Bond wore sandals in Jamaica, with socks. How cool do you want?
Mind you, he also smoked, drank cocktails, and didn't like tea. I suppose pobody's nerfect.

On one occasion a young lady criticised my attire (can't remember why) and I pointed out to her that I didn't accept sartorial advice from people wearing legwarmers.
Didn't go down awfully well.

If my feet are cold then nothing will warm them except a bath or hot-water bottle. I feet terrible if I get cold feet. I can stand cold anywhere except my feet. Nevertheless, there have been, and will be, occasions when I would not be seen dead in socks because of the footwear I chose to have that day/night.

Can you imagine seeing a woman in socks and slingbacks, kitten-heels or stilettos? Unthinkable! ;-)

I think men get away with a lot more sartorial crime than any woman would be allowed to. I am not blaming men for all of that either. We women tend to set our own standards often with clothes and I think many see shoes as a far bigger fashion statement than men do.

All this said. Anyone should be able to wear whatever they want as long as they are cosy and comfy in it themselves. What will allow that though would be other's reactions ;-)

I agree, each to their own ! I actually like what the wearing of socks with sandals says about a person - i.e. they don't give a hoot about style conventions or what people think. I admire and am drawn to people like that !

The particular male sartorial style (if it can be called that) that I prefer to see is the "old-fashioned British crumpled look" - trousers ( or cords, not denim), scarcely ironed shirt, knitted jumper, shoes (not trainers)/sandals (with/without socks)/boots, gone-through-a-hedge-backwards hair.

The style that appeals less (or, to be honest, not at all) involves the wearing of any of the following: baseball cap, trainers, tattoos, shaved head or very short hair, T-shirt, sweatshirt, long baggy shorts. All of these seem to have become the norm - It's interesting that the old conventional style that I described above has now become unusual amongst the vast majority of the male population - a great pity, in my opinion.

But I want to say that I don't mind in the least men wearing baseball cap, T-shirt, and sweatshirts when they are being informal, and when they are engaged in recreational activities. That said, it depends on what the baseball hat, T-shirt, and sweatshirt says.

I have no problem what so ever with men who have a shaved head or very short hair. As for tattoes, again, I think it depends on what the tatoo is. Also, it depends on how many tatooes there are and where the tattoo is. But if the question is do I find a large number of tattoos on a man's body to be attractive-regardless of what the tatoos are and where they are, I'd probably say no. That said, I could "play pass" {ignore} that if there were other redeeming features ;o}.

But, Jeanie, I'm not sure what you mean by "long baggy shorts". Are they over large "boxer shorts" that are worn as outer wear? Or are they sagging, overlarge pants that are popular among some American teens/young adults? If so, I agree that that's not a clothing style that I'd like to see males {or females} wear.

Also, Jeanie, what did you mean by "knitted jumpers"?

And when you mention "shoes (not trainers)" are you referring to what Americans call tennis shoes {gym shoes; sneakers/sneaks}? If so, are you saying that you don't like men to wear those during informal, "down" times times or when they are involved in recreational activities?

I've been around long enough to REALLY not care so much what's on the outside. It's hard enough to find someone you understand who understands you, whether they're a friend or something else, that appearance really isn't much of a factor as long as it's within the realm of 'normal' Things that wouldn't be might be a guy wearing a pink miniskirt to go to a restaurant with you, unless he shaves his legs, or somebody rolling around in pig poop before a concert.

Azizi - yes, I did start by saying "to each their own", and I do mean that - also that I like to see people who show by the clothes they choose to wear that they don't give a hoot about current style conventions or what other people think.

The current "style convention" in the UK for casual wear for men of most ages, except for perhaps those aged 75+, is the one I described: baseball cap, trainers(sports shoes/sneakers), T-shirt, sweatshirt, long baggy shorts (which I think you would describe as short pants ending just above the knee). I think that "look" becomes increasingly unattractive and unsuitable, the older a man is (anything over 20s). To me, there is something rather amusing about seeing a 50 or 60 year-old Englishman wearing a baseball cap and trainers (sneakers).

As far as the tattoos and shaved heads are concerned, this seems to be an increasing trend among younger men (say, under 40).It's just a personal thing, but I find that "look" rather unattractive. Body piercings, ditto. But - each to their own, and no doubt they don't like the look of me, either !

Azizi - I will see if I can find a picture to illustrate the "old-fashioned crumpled British look", which is devoid of all the non-British style imports that I mentioned (i.e. the baseball caps, the sneakers, the sweatshirts...) so you can see what I mean.

I agree totally with Jeri that of course it is what a person is like on the inside that is the important thing. However, what people choose to wear does tell you something about their personality and the aspects of themselves that they wish to present to the world.

You often find that a man who is secure about his attire and appearance - in a way not needing to make statement about himself, nor need to draw attention - who is comfortable in his own skin, often has quite a calm personality within. I call then 'sorted' men. Hard to define but you certainly know when you meet one. They have a calm aura of sorts. I am not on about the type who could not give two hoots how they look at all, never wash or change, and generally look rather rough. That goes too far in my opinion.

That is not to say that a gentleman's man in suit cannot have a great personality too. Of course they can.

Does casual clothing mean casual personality? Not at all sure but I have met some wonderful men who are just plain chilled out sartorially and as people.

It's not as if I am some Mona Lisa. I am not that easy on the eyes no matter how I dress! However, I am of the opinion that a woman should always care about how she looks and what she wears. As I said in a previous thread... We are women. We have double-standards to live up to! lol

Jeanie, and Jeri, thanks for the responses. And Jeanie, thanks for the photos. They were a big help, though I'm still not sure about what the British crumpled look looks like in warm weather. But I suppose that look is much more dressy than tee shirts and those long shorts.

Btw, in my neck of the woods, those long shorts are called "capris", though I guess their real name is "capri pants". When I was a child in the 1950s, this length pants were called "peddle pushers". Maybe they were called that because it was easier to ride a bike with those length pants than a skirt, but I'm not sure if that's the real reason. And maybe the Capris are called that because they are named after the Italian resort, Capri, and not the car that has that name, though the car is probably also named after the Italian resort.

Btw, and this is off subject- but both men and women wear capris. And capris come in different lengths and different styles {some are straight leg, and some aren't}. And I've noticed that for at least two years or so {but it's probably has been a fashion trend longer than that} women wear capris with dress boots or high heels. They also wear jeans with dress boots or high heels too. I say "they" because I don't wear jeans with heels, though I've have worn capris with dress boots, though I've not done so that often.

When I was young{er} :o) jeans and "peddle pushers" were strickly casual dress. Times change and so does fashion. But I'm {also} one of those folks who don't change our fashion preferences just because the fashion trends have changed. As a matter of fact, in some fashion styles and other ways, I like being different from other people.

Hey, I wear work boots! Do you know how difficult it is trying to find a pair of steel-toed chainsaw-resistant work boots in a US woman's size 6? I got asked if I was going to gild them and hang them from my mirror by the guy who taught my safety class.

As for socks with sandals - eew! Definite turn-off.

Xinhua News Agency said a Nigerian was detained last week in Zhuhai, which borders Macau in southern China, after he was caught carrying more than 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of heroin.

It said attention was drawn to the man because he was "wearing a pair of weird sandals."

"Police X-rayed his suitcase and found another pair of strange sandals in it," Xinhua said.

The heroin was hidden in the soles of the two pairs of sandals, it said. Xinhua did not describe the sandals.

A It's really up to you and how frozen you can stand your feet. That said, some sandals read less "summery" than others. An open-toe leather wedge, say, feels more substantial (and winter-appropriate) than flip flops. What to stash away 'til spring? Espadrilles, huaraches and anything that says "Lido Deck." I'll stop in at Mark's tomorrow and see if they have size 6 female steel-toed boots. How high do the sides have to be? Are size 6 female tootsies in the US the same as size 6 tootsies in Canada?

Thanks, Gurney. Actually, it's Ranger 1 lookin' for 'em. The only steel-toed boots I wear anymore are fire boots. Thirty below and a four hour working fire and one's toes do go numb and worse, the rubber freezes so that the water we use provides us with a skating rink. Once had a 44 mm hose on low pressure push my partner and me about fifty feet beckwards. Slid all the way.

You mentioned miners' boots. ????

Azizi, plus-fours are a type of trouser that golfers and shooters used to wear. Baggy down to below the knee, closing in about the thick part of the calf. Worn with long woolen (woollen to you) stockings (to above the knee) and golf brogues.

I'm more used to calling trousers "pants". But I don't know if "plus four trousers" would be called "plus four pants". Not that any of this matters. However, I like learning new trivia pursuits type things, especially when it comes to exotic cultures. And wearing plus four trousers and men wearing socks with sandals would be called exotic in my neck of the woods. Well, actually, those clothing styles would be called "different" and not exotic.

But it's all good.

Older, not exotic, I think. I've seen them in American films, black-and-white ones.
Never actually heard them called anything but plus-fours. Not pants, trousers, breaches, britches, breeks.
Most of the few examples I've seen were tubular down to the narrowing, rather than tapered like 'yours,' and worn tucked up, like tracksuit bottoms.

I'm not talking your genuine plus fours here; rather pulling your socks over your trousers and pulling them half way up the calf, or a little below the knee if they're long enough, and bunching them out a bit to create the classic Plus Four Effect. The trousers I generally wear are baggy black Italian air force surplus that lace up around the bottom, so more surplus-fours really, and ideal for the job. You got good hosiery, you've got to show it off to its best effect.

If you have a well-turned calf, why not show it off? After all, it is common to see people shopping in sportswear. Tracksuits, trainers, baseball caps, ski-masks and shotguns, that kind of thing.
