Candle will be lit tonight. Scooby - there are more alternatives to surgery than were available even a few years ago. Good luck to Gemma.

All my best Scooby........We just lost a popular young newswoman to this, a real activist and a great inspiration.   Her station has been doing regular programming about breast cancer to carry on what she started. Heather Pick's motto was always, "Get all the help you need and can find then get on with your life."

Columbus is also the home of Stephanie Spielman whose organization has raised a ton of money for research and help for those in need. We're also home to one of the top research centers in the country, The James Cancer Research Center at Ohio State.

What all that was about was simply to say there is all kinds of help and all kinds of hope. I have learned so much lately myself in just watching all the coverage during the past few years and especially this past month. The genetic end is very important and can help them know which treatments are effective and which are not. I didn't know this myself, but Breast Cancer is not just one type, there are actually four different types and each requires a different treatment.

Bottom line.......There's more than just hope. Survival rates are way up and early detection has always been crucial to that. Tell her there are lots of weird old folkies at the 'Cat who'll all be sending their best thoughts, prayers, and healing energies her way. And as these well traveled but true words say it.........

Cancer is limited
Cancer cannot cripple love
Cancer cannot shatter hope
Cancer cannot erode faith
Cancer cannot destroy peace
Cancer cannot kill friendship
Cancer cannot destroy memories
Cancer cannot silence courage
Cancer cannot invade the soul
Cancer cannot steal eternal life
Cancer cannot conquer the spirit
Cancer is limited.....

All My Best.......

Spaw

The verse Spaw quoted is beautfully put; but it remains that what the goddamned cancer can do, is take away someone you love far too goddamned soon. Prayers from here in Michigan for the best outcome on this, Scooby.

Thanksgivings for a complete and positive outcome for Gemma. I know of one young Mudcatter who has been through a mastectomy and is doing very well, several years later. May it be so for Gemma, sans surgery if possible.

Spaw, thank for sharing that. It is good to be reminded of cancer's limitations. My mother had uterine cancer in the early 70s when treatment was limited. She survived, cancer-free, until 1999 when old age caught up to her.

Our thoughts are with her and you Scooby. Sadly in circumstances like this mastectomy may be the only option but if that means she gets to live a full and happy life it may be what she needs. But more importantly she has the support of her family and friends like you.
xx

My wife had cancer when she was 17. That was in 1959.

She flew out to some sort of quilt convention thing this morning.

It CAN be done! (And it might not be cancer, either.)

A friend of mine went for a scan and tissue check today and it was a cyst... not breast cancer..... so many women automatically think a lump means breast cancer... but there are apparently many things that can cause those lumps. Perhaps it is human nature to worry but worrying never solved anything... whatever happens we have to live with it. I am so pleased for your friend and mine and did some praying that all would be OK for both of them... as far as I am concerned...my prayers were answered.
Best wishes, Mike.

Scooby,
Thank you for the update. COngratulations to the young lady.
My first lump was a fibroid and scared the crap out of me. Now I take them in stride. Annual mammograms, ladies. And if you don't have health insurance, check with your local hospitals. There are many free mammogram programs out there.
