Subject: RE: BS: Greatest Love Story? From: ClaireBear Date: 17 Nov 08 - 10:03 PM Richard Thompson's "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" (but I've never been sure: is the primary love interest Molly, or is it the bike?). His "Beeswing" is right up there as well. Oh, and Richard Lovelace's "To Althea from Prison." Funny how smoothly a whole lifetime of love story fits into a song or a poem, and what a challenge it can be to spread it out over a 350-page novel. |

Subject: RE: BS: Greatest Love Story? From: Ebbie Date: 18 Nov 08 - 02:37 AM Ha. You're dreaming, Little Hawk. In actuality, it happened in your last incarnation- and wouldn't you know- you blew it. I was your neighbor and I saw it all. I felt so sorry for you; you were so young. *g* |

Subject: RE: BS: Greatest Love Story? From: GUEST,MM Date: 18 Nov 08 - 02:45 PM I was thinking more along the lines of the greatest love stories ever stolen from ET, like... Anna Nicole and Howard Stern. Or Princess Di and Princess Di. True love birds of our era, all. They proved beyond a shadow of a doubt just how messy love--and bird shit!--can be. |
Subject: RE: BS: Greatest Love Story? From: Peter T. Date: 18 Nov 08 - 03:36 PM You didn't say song. "Romeo and Juliet" obviously. "Pride and Prejudice". "Wuthering Heights" (my top three). Others worth noting: "Lady With a Pet Dog" (Chekov); "War and Peace" (Natasha and Andrei). In terms of sheer insane obsessive love, "Lady of Shalott" (Loreena McKinnet's version comes to mind) is pretty close to the top. yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: BS: Greatest Love Story? From: Cluin Date: 18 Nov 08 - 06:14 PM Ketchup and Potatoes, if Mr. connors is to be believed... The Ketchup Song by Stompin' Tom Connors There was a guy from PEI, they used to call Potato He met this young Leamington, Ontario Tomato But he had eyes for other girls and she was a little mushy So they said, "Well, let's get wed; there's no sense bein' fussy" Baked sized, french fries, how they love tomatoes So dress 'em up with Heinz ketchup Ketchup loves Potatoes Ketchup loves Potatoes Well, he went down to Windsor town, to buy a ring on Monday Saturday, they said, "Okay, we'll cut the cake on Sunday" But Sunday came, and what a shame, they had no one to fetch it Without a cake, they just sat and ate potato chips and ketchup (chorus) And so this guy from PEI, they used to call Potato Got two boys and a little girl: two spuds a one tomato They romp and run around Leamington, and, boy, when they get hungry The bottle drips all over the chips, way down in the ketchup country (chorus) |

Subject: RE: BS: Greatest Love Story? From: maple_leaf_boy Date: 19 Nov 08 - 02:51 PM On Film: There are so many, but most recently; Wedding Crashers. John (Owen Wilson) and Claire (Rachel MacAdams). The type of people they were: Their backgrounds, lifestyles, and how John started to change his ways when he actually conversed with Claire, and realized that he was falling in love with her, and wanted to reveal his initial intentions. (Even though Jeremy,(Vince Vaughn) tried to convince him not to do so). Also, how Claire was already in a serious relationship with somebody else. It's kind of hard to describe the other parts of the story without spoiling the ending for someone who hasn't seen it. Musical Love Story: Hmmm......I'll have to think about that one. Book: I haven't read any romance novels. Mostly historical books, so I can't voice my opinion on that one, yet. |

Subject: RE: BS: Greatest Love Story? From: Sleepy Rosie Date: 21 Nov 08 - 05:02 AM I think I prefer more 'ordinary' love stories to the great ones. Some of my favourites: Collete 'Cheri' and 'The Last of Cheri' - a Mature French courtesan and her younger lover, and the death of an age of innocent indulgence. Alain Fornier 'Les Grande Meulnes' - the death of a potent dream of love, which carries a whole country of 'otherness', upon the reality of capturing it. Molly Keane 'Devoted Ladies' - obsessive psycho-sexual powerplay between 20's lesbian lovers. 'Great Expectations' - for Estelle, the only psychologically mature young woman Dickens ever penned. As for 'greats' I don't think anyones mentioned 'Gone With the Wind' or 'Wuthering Heights' yet? All good melodramatic fun. |

Subject: RE: BS: Greatest Love Story? From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 22 Nov 08 - 05:06 PM Tigger & Tilly, my dog and cat. Tilly (cat) spent 15 minutes last night kissing Tigger's face all over, before curling up next to him and closing her eyes tight shut for the entire night. Tigs tries to repair his damaged reputation by snapping at her feet now and then, but she simply turns round and kisses him. And he gives in to her, every time. |

Subject: RE: BS: Greatest Love Story? From: Big Al Whittle Date: 22 Nov 08 - 09:44 PM i always thought the liasions in Robert louis Stevensons epic were a bit suspect:- David Balfour and alan Breck Stewart Long John Silver (long for esotericreasons?) and Jim ('smart as paint') Hawkins. Dick Seldon (the transvestite) and the hero(whose name I forget) in The Back Arrow. Wouldn't be surprised if any of those couples didn't end up in a bungalow in Hove: doing the gay disco every week; coming home each evening to cuddle up with a hot cocoa, and a Tom Robinson video. |
