Subject: RE: Chords for Steam Powered Aeroplane From: GUEST,jeff Date: 10 Jan 09 - 10:05 PM Had the pleasure of hanging out w/John Hartford once after a show. We jammmed on SPA and a bunch of other stuff. The 2nd Chord in the B section is a Gmaj7 not a Bm. They're very similar in that a Bm is comprised of B-D-F# and Gmaj7 is G-B-D-F#. The Bm works as long as the bass is holding down the tonic. If one listens to the original recording you can clearly hear Norman Blake playing a Gmaj7 in 1st position w/open stings and using his index finger to bring out the F# note on the high E string. And on the last line of the verse it 'walks' up to D from Am by using just the bass note of Bm: Am-B(on the A string)-C-D Used to know that whole record virtually note for note, but it's been years. Thank you for the reminder...I'm goin' web huntin' :-) |
Subject: RE: Chords for Steam Powered Aeroplane From: Rex Date: 12 Jan 09 - 07:51 PM Hmm, says I, thank'ee for the chords for this worthy song. But then anything that come outa John Hartford is worthy. I was just visiting, don't visit as often as I used to, or should. Was looking for the earliest date for the fiddle tune: Fire on the Mountain. What turned up was from the fire we had up here years back. Son of a gun. It was a helpful thing having Mudcat pals with good wishes caring about us. I was and am grateful. EJ, again, thanks for the chords. Cretzon too. For what its worth, the Arvada Center is having their 20th Cowboy Poetry gathering this week Wednesday through Sunday. http://www.arvadacenter.org/ Historian, Mark Gardner and I will be performing their Thursday through Saturday. Four sessions each day, 10:00 through 5:00. Come by if you can. I really do need to drop in here more often. Adios, Rex Rideout http://www.timetravelmusic.com |

I went to a jam and someone suggested this song, and I pulled out my printed copy. The woman next to me was looking at it and I said "this chord pattern is wrong." She opened a notebook and said " I got one here from the internet, but I'm not sure about it." Damned if it wasn't a printout of my previous post. What are the freaking chances of THAT?! |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords: Steam Powered Aereo-Plane (J Hartford) From: GUEST,ernie Date: 16 Feb 10 - 09:49 PM I'm confused about all those "B#m" chords. There aren't any in the tune. They are all Bm. Other than that, everybody's got sort of a handle on it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords: Steam Powered Aereo-Plane (J Hartford) From: GUEST,phiddleguy Date: 14 Mar 10 - 07:09 AM I think the B#m refers to a Bm with a #5 because wouldn't a B# just be a C? Anyways whether you calls it a Bm#5 or Gmaj7/B it's all god to me but... what is the very last chord at the end? Please? thx |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords: Steam Powered Aereo-Plane (J Hartford) From: GUEST,Guest - Keith Date: 16 May 11 - 07:05 PM I didn't read through all of the posts.....BUT the few that I did missed the lyric on the chorus - On a genuine old fashioned AUTHENTIC steam powered aeroplane. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords: Steam Powered Aereo-Plane (J Hartford) From: GUEST Date: 27 Feb 20 - 10:43 PM I believe that would be a G7/sus 4th at the end. On the banjo, play a bar G7 at 12th fret. The dominant 7th is the F note on the first string 15th fret played with the pinkie. The sus 4th is the C note on the second string 13th fret played with the middle finger. That's what it sounds like to me anyway. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords: Steam Powered Aereo-Plane (J Hartford) From: GUEST Date: 27 Feb 20 - 11:02 PM There is no D in the A part. Seems to me the logical walk up to D would be Am-Bm-C-C#dim-D because you would arrive at the D chord at the right time in a ascending chord scale. I googled it and found about five different versions of the chords. only two agreed...and though I agree it's a GM7, NOT a Bm in the A part... not one of those six versions called for the GM7. The two versions I found that agreed had Am-A/B C/E D...assuming they mean Am then Am with B in the bass and C with E in the bass...they did not note the timing...how many beats on each chord...but that would have the E overshooting the D. The only version I found with Hartford himself (CMT video-Tony Rice, Vassar, a GAGGLE of others including a piano player) it was unclear to me. Seems like not everybody was playing it the same way. Roy Huskey Jr was definitely not playing the same chords as Tony rice who is always playing colored chords anyway so who knows what the hell he was playing. I'm not much of a guitar player so I can't just look at the chord shape and tell. I don't have the record any longer. That's what you get on the internet. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords: Steam Powered Aereo-Plane (J Hartford) From: GUEST Date: 27 Feb 20 - 11:12 PM Well shut my mouth. The bass player on the CMT video DOES put a D in the A part, and he DOES overshoot the C by walking to the E note on that last ascending bass line. What do I know? Well, I know how I like it played and I'm not doing either. That was not Roy Huskey Jr, although I bet he played on the album, or his dad did. |
