All I can say, Azizi, is that I'm glad I'm not in downtown DC! Not that I'm against the inauguration, not at all, it's the crowds. Besides, I have to go to work. Helping kids and adults better themselves (I hope) is something I think that both Dr. King and soon-to-be-President Obama would approve.

I too visited Washington DC in 2005 and took photos standing infront of the Lincoln memorial. I can't imagine the crowds there in what to me was a peaceful and beautiful place. Seeing it all on the tv over here in the uk seems so surreal.

I hope that Obama can deliver half of what he has promised. He seems a very genuine and highly intelligent man. It can only be a good thing. Like John said...a great day for all. I hope that everyone enjoys the celebrations and your son has a wonderful experience Carol.

Thank goodness!! Oh, Happy Day!!! I got to watch it with my five year old grandson, Morgan, who sort of understood, enough to ask me if we "nurture children", too, one of the speakers mentioned. Can't remember which one, sorry. He stood with me, with his hand over his heart, while I sang our national anthem with the choir at the end. I am so grateFULL for this day, for our children's children, our children, our peoples and country and for peoples and their countries all over the world who long for peace and who recognise a World leader who can lead.

I work in the Public Affairs office of a military headquarters in Ottawa, Canada. We had the TV tuned to the live coverage, and staff officers from all over the floor came to watch.

An aside: even Obama's strongest detractors are affected... I quote from a popular conservative religious forum:

"I try to avoid looking him in the eyes - even through television. I get a strange calming feeling when I look in his eyes. Very weird, very alarming to my inner gut."

I was left with the same feeling I had from his acceptance speech when he was nominated. Beside President Obama's speech, I was most impressed with the benediction that was given by civil rights' leader Rev. Joseph Lowery.

In case you didn't recognise it, Rev. Lowery's beginning paragraph is the third verse of "Lift Every Voice And Sing". That song was written by James Weldon Johnson, and put to music by his brother John. "Lift Every Voice And Sing" is generally considered by African Americans to be our "national anthemn". At one time, African Americans would stand when we sung this song and when we heard that song sung. However that practice largely ended by the 1980s.

Also, Rev. Lowery recited a modified version of this African American song about America's Jim Crow system that was sung sixty years ago by Blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Bill_Broonzy:

Well, it was very special because it allowed all of us who worked in the campaign to get together again as about 50 of us assmebled at "Uncle Buck's Resturant" for the swearing in...

If there was any negative it's that there were other folks in the resturant who I thought were disrepectfull and rude while talking loudly during even the prayers but, hey, just proof that we do indeed have some folks who just don't get it...

We had a bit of a **ahem** mishap here. Ten minutes before the ceremony the electricity in our area went plumb OUT ----   BONK!!!   (Bev's claiming that some juiced-up, walking-antique of a segregantionist pulled the plug down at the central switch.)

No matter - we went out into the iced-up van and listened to the proceedings on the radio. It had come full-circle - fitting in a way - as Barack's words had coaxed me onto the icy streets of last winter... now we'll see where history brings us.

Fox News replayed the swearing-in moment when President Obama and Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. each bobbled the words to the constitutional oath. "They had a kind of garbled oath," Wallace said.

"It's just conceivable that this will end up going to the courts," Wallace speculated.

Perhaps. But Wallace quickly added: "As Brit Hume rightly pointed out, if it goes to the Supreme Court, certainly Chief Justice Roberts will say that he took the oath."

I liked the way Michelle Obama reacted to that mix-up with the oath - amused tolerance. Not the least surprised, you could almost see her saying "typical man". It's the kind of thing that happens at weddings.

I bet he'll get teased about that by her and the kids. (And I'll bet he makes a joke about it when he comes to be inaugurated again in 2013.)
And it was reassuring to see that he's always not quite as cool and in control inside as he manages to look on the outside.

Rev Lowery 90? Not quite - I see he was born October 1921. Still, what with Pete Seeger on Sunday that says something about how it can be good for the body as well as the soul to throw yourself into working for civil rights!   That benediction and Pete singing "This Land" were two of the high points of the inauguration triduum.

Well, I TRIED to go to the "End of an Error" bash at The Press Room tonight. I worked until 8 and that's when the party (with the Leftist Marching Band and a bunch of other fine musicicians) was set to start. Only took me 15 minutes or so to drive there from work, find a parking place only a block away and walk in the door.

Alas, I think the legal capacity of upstairs had been reached BEFORE 8 -- and most of the Leftist Marching Band didn't arrive until I was leaving. I waited in line for about a half an hour, chatting with friends as well as people I'd never seen before -- but the line wasn't moving and didn't look like it would soon. No one could go upstairs until bodies left. Sigh.

As someone said, "That's what happens when parties are posted on FaceBook.

Yeah. I'm glad I went. I'm glad I was part of even standing in line. But my feet gave out and I went home to raise a beer to Obama and toast a country finally aiming in the right direction.

I'm sitting here listening to 'The Times They Are A-Changing' at the moment, Richie Havens version..and I feel a huge opportunity was missed in having some big name musicians up there from the past and the present, playing some inspirational songs from another era when things were changing around the world.

I know there was a concert the day before, but wouldn't it have been great if so many young people had gone away from that Inauguration with some incredible songs ringing in their ears?

Let's face it, the classical piece by John Williams has already drifted right out of my mind...

By the way, regarding Chris Wallace of Faux News questioning whether or not Obama is legitimately the president because he verbally stumbled while taking the oath, I just heard on NPR this morning that Obama had memorized the oath, and when Chief Justice Roberts goofed by changing the order of words, it threw Obama off stride.

Hardly a matter for the courts, and if it were, Chief Justice Roberts should be the defendant,

Olbermann on MSNBC said Obama actually became President while YoYo Ma and others were performing. I loved hearing Simple Gifts and laughed in joy to see how happy YoYo was to be there and playing!

I found this: Obama didn't finish taking the oath until 12:05 p.m. That was five minutes after he actually became president under the Constitution.

So, maybe he was already at noon, regardless of the oath-taking? That five minutes doesn't corroborate what MSNBC said, though.

I finally got to watch the CSPAN rebroadcast of the event late yesterday evening.   Like you , I found the Williams' "Simple Gifts" piece very moving... and made more so by the ethnic composition of the ensemble.   The Jew, The Chinese American, The African-American, The Latino pianist...   

I grew up in a 'melting pot' city environ where we all tended to be rough on each other. What a gift to now enjoy the fluid merging of these once disparate voices - within the construct of Williams' new look into that simple melody.

What a day for transition symbols - Teddy and Byrd and the chairbound Cheney (Were's a 220 Volt outlet when you need one?) and the last look at the smirk on the face of the murdering puppet/prince...

Oh yeah, Aretha Rocked the House... and Lowery brought us all home.

I was listening to a Constitutional scholar on NPR a little while ago, who said that it would be better if Obama would retake the oath of office. He said that because the oath is in the Constitution in quotation marks, it needs to be recited exactly as it is worded in the Constitution, and that the word, "faithfully" was out of order as Obama said it. He said that casts a cloud that doesn't need to be there. I wish he would retake it, myself.

And it was Roberts who said it wrong on Tuesday. Obama had it memorized, but Roberts, who did not have a script, did not say it correctly, so that's how it became a little mixed up.

On Tuesday, Roberts, apparently working without a copy of the oath handy on the Capitol steps, started out by reciting a six-word phrase, but Obama broke in halfway through and repeated the first three.

That seemed to throw the chief justice off stride, and he proceeded to mix up the order of the words in the next phrase.

The Constitution sets out the language that should be used in the oath: "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."

Roberts moved the word "faithfully" back nine spots, and used "to" instead of "of." That threw the president off base, and he smiled and paused to collect his thoughts, then decided to follow Roberts' lead.

But the chief justice at the same time attempted to correct himself.

Apparently this saying is traveling all around the USA and has been found in Ghana and other places in the world. It can be found on a number of blogs and is written on tee shirts and sweat shirts. "Rosa sat so Martin could walk" etc. has been credited to various people, especially to rapper Jay-Z {it may be in one of his raps} But here's a blog post with information about the origini of this saying:

In all my life I will never forget the opening moments of her song. I will remember her standing on a portico built by slaves, looking out at the mall and to her right, Pennsylvania Avenue where a scant couple of hundred years ago, there were slave pens and hotels where slaveowners had cells in the basement to "store" their slaves in. I think none of us are surprised- as was noted above, it was cold out there - but NBC just now mentioned that the music that we listened to at the inauguration was prerecorded. Said that they were playing but what they put out is not what we heard.

Now I wonder what instruments they brought out into that cold? Not their best stuff, I hope.

Aretha said the cold affected her singing too, that she wasn't happy with how she sounded. I can imagine how cold her lips must have felt but I thought she sounded great.
