well hallo all , this is the day many people have feared, in the
news just two min ago , people say " The Revolution has started ? "

those people made the biggest bank roppery in the world and put 300.000
into slave in one night . How can we trust people who crashed
everything to build it up again ? we can not .

and still we get news as you can read if you go the this :

http://www.mbl.is/mm/frettir/english/

Sorry ble link does not work for me at the momment .
I fear those days ahead .......... here in Iceland if the pepople
who run this protest go to far .

Sorry about this , but some like to know what is happening
to this useally peaceful nation .

But not today , rocks, snow, and other stuff was thrown at the parlament .

All the best from a worry Viking , lets hope he ´s wrong

Skarpi

I spent a lot of time in Iceland in the 80's and 90's and I can honestly say that I enjoyed every minute of my time there. The self-confidence of the country, the enjoyment of life, the friendly people - I thought it was the best country I'd ever visited.

To see the reports coming out of there now is really sad.
The reaction of the people is so untypical, but I can understand why they do it.

I hope that your parliament sees sense, sorts out the important things and gets life back to normal.

I'm sure that the good sense of the people, which runs so deep in your make-up, will win through in the end and you'll come good again.

K/van

Well Skarpi, you are very lucky, we have a bigger idiot running our country into severe deflation.
The banks are taking him for a ride and the person on the street is suffering badly.
The protest seemed to be under control in your country and it was only 2000 poeple. thats not that many. It certainly isn't the Nation protesting.
Skarpi, calm down and get a grip of yourself, before you have a massive heart attack.

We are all in the same boat, not helped by the press who hype things up beyond all belief just to get us all reacting.

I sure hope that people keep their head in Iceland and you look after yourself.

You know, Skarpi, we've all been way too apathetic for way too long, and whilst we've all turned away these corporate, greedy so and so's have moved in, right around the world. It's time we all started waking up and demanding more from our politicians, from our leaders.

Watching President Obama talking about it all, earlier on, he too realises that dark days lie ahead, and he acknowledged the reason the darkness has come too. It's good that young people are taking a stand, not good the police are being heavy handed, but it goes with standing up for what you believe in.

I think that soon, the younger generation will become similar to those of the 60s and early 70s who demanded a better world and worked so hard to change things.

This time round the new leader of the most powerful nation on earth is on our side.

The problem isn't apathy, it's sub prime lending - and now they're out of money because nobody can pay it back. But I'm not too clear on how we could have stopped the banks from doing it. Greed yes, for those in a position to benefit from it. Which was never us.

Anglo-Irish Bank crashed because it "lent" billions (not millions) to its own directors. Now they're in trouble and the government (also broke) is supposed to bail them out. With what? A sieve?

It's happening everywhere, Skarpi.

It is sad to see from the link in the first post that teenagers and even an 11 year old boy have been arrested.

UK cannot take Iceland's soft option

The parallels with Iceland are disturbing. The country was ruined by the antics of its three big banks. They built up foreign liabilities equal to 900pc of GDP. Operating as hedge funds, they borrowed in dollars, euros and pounds to speculate. However, the state lacked the foreign reserves to match this leverage.

But Iceland at least had the luxury of letting banks default – shifting losses on to the rest of the world. It refused to honour foreign debts.

Any protests need to be done calmly if they are to have any effect.

calm down and get a grip of yourself, before you have a massive heart attack.

Dear Villan ? , .............. how many are you ?? in your Country ???

and I am very calm my friend , so calm I have not started yet .

20 people who bougth three banks in Iceland made Iceland bankrupt
we did not need world crisis for that , the world crisis are extra
problem for us here my friend . In your country you take those men into jail , and then you investigate things , here they can go free as it has never happen and remember that the Icesave has not been paid up yet

and when I say something about our crisis here in Iceland dont misunderstand
me , Iceland is a small country with 320, 000 and now becouse of those 20 men I and rest of us who are alive and those who are unborn
for next 15 years to come have to pay everthing that those men did wrong ,about 50,336,00 $ on every head , I know the whole world has crisis , but I think noone has rupt as
much as those 2o people , ofcourse I forgot some Maddock did that .

The reason for those lines are , that only once before have the Icelandic Nation protested so hard , and that was 1949 when
Iceland joined the Nato . The men and woman here are useally peaceful
and we dont make a fush about things , but this time the meter is full.

we can not accept those men runnin free on cayman Island with the money they stole , and we can not accept our Parlament to stay on
, with those men and woman who let this happen without a blink .

you may be many millions , but we are only 300 hundred thousand
and it hurts when men and woman who have done nothing wrong
have to take the plast .

So Mr. Villan I am very calm :>)

Clearly not everyone has been repaid.

From www.bookbrunch.co.uk

Iceland losses send chill through Wirral library service

The Labour-Liberal Democrat council that runs the Wirral has approved the closure of 13 libraries with the loss of up to 1,000 jobs. A public consultation period ends on 15 January, and the plans have drawn protestors on to Merseyside streets, with thousands adding their names to a Save Wirral Services site on Facebook. Two of the libraries, at Beechwood and Seacombe, serve communities classed as among the most disadvantaged in the UK. The authority has lost money in Icelandic banks and the cuts are part of a "strategic review" that is also likely to bring about the closure of other leisure facilities. According to the pressure group Campaign for the Book, Wirral libraries have some of the best records in the country for encouraging children to read, with schemes such as Baby Bounce and Rhyme and summer reading flourishing.

I still haven't worked out how a man who lost thousands of people their pensions ended up as our prime minister. That's really terrible news about those libraries.

I think we've a lot more to come though, because the corruption has run deep for a very long time, without wanting to depress too many people. Yes, apathy has played it's part, because it's been obvious for years that when the bubble burst it would burst with a massive BANG!

What I don't understand though is how, even now, when they know who these people are, as skarpi is saying, that they're not arrested and brought to trial, with the money being tracked down and returned..Ahd WHO authorised for the banks to give the bonuses to those at the top?

the Icelandic parliament, Althingi, convened for the first time today since Christmas – and over 2,000 angry protesters surrounded the building using drums, horns, pans and simple clapping to ask for new elections.

The atmosphere was tense, inside the chamber and outside, as the Left Green Party reiterated its support for the protesters. Several Green MPs used the recess periods to go outside and join the protest.

Most MPs gathered in the building around 12, and were safely inside by the time protesters started arriving half an hour later. There was no church service before parliament.

Over 100 police officers were present in parliament's back garden and over 30 people were arrested - among them many teenagers, including an 11 year-old boy. Pepper spray was used repeatedly to disperse the crowd, but with less effect than in the past. Many protesters wore sunglasses, and a few even came wearing gas masks.

Journalist Helga Vala Helgadottir angrily summed up her feelings to a Morgunbladid peer: "They've arrested some 15 teenagers – these kids over there lying in the corner in handcuffs. And yet these people we elected two years ago, our trusted representatives, are inside right now debating whether or not we should allow the sale of alcohol in normal shops. This is the nation who is talking out here. You have to listen to us!"

The IceNews photographer and two Morgunbladid cameramen were among the many people to get pepper spray in their eyes.

Skarpi, our hearts hurt for you, I don't understand all the details but I know your economy has been kicked off it's feet, and it is not fair to such a good people.

Our economy is still in the hands of the stupid bankers who blew everything up; even the new head of our Treasury Department is just a protege of Hank Paulson, who is turning out to be a very slick thief of trillions of dollars.

Hopefully some day these speculators will be in jail, in all our countries.

Have you ever heard of index linked mortgages? You know, the ones where the payments/valuation go up or down according to the stock market index, or the bank rate.
Yes those ones, the ones where before the banks went bust you owned 75% of your house, and afterwards you only own 25%.
Did you ever go out and but a new car,and have the banks go down taking your savings with them a month later?
Did you ever try to sell a one month old car, at a loss, in a financial downturn, in order to try and sort out your life, and finances?
Things like that are happening to Icelanders today, they are suffering as much as, and more than all the rest of those who put their money in Icesave, with no prospect of getting it back.
Just put yourself in their shoes folks.
I think some people have been a bit snippy with Skarpi in this and other threads. He's a worried man, and who wouldn't be if similar things were happening to them.
Please also remember that English isn't his first language, and make allowances for the lack of nuance in some of his posts.
It comes form his heart, and that's a warm place.

Gonna be more lost jobs and pensions in the UK. Thousands more. Councils (borough, district and county), even those not directly affected by lost Iceland savings, are slashing jobs and outsourcing staff and services to "independent partners." Why? Because they have to keep taxes down, yet still provide statutory services with less money.

I know it sounds awful and I am as green as the next person, but the Uk governement could provide a little relief to County Councils by offering a temporary amnesty or reduction on the fines for waste disposal.
Councils might think about downsizing the upper echalon where big salaries and pension payments go. Evey organisation is top heavy with directors, heads and managers. And these people, in order to appear indespensible, create silly, fluffy initiatives without ever doing risk management exercises. instead, they are still hiring fat cats and shifting friends up into higher posts as quick as they can. Really is disgusting.

Sorry.. I better stop.. My personal (or personnel) hell here.

Skarpi - my good wishes for you and for those most deserving in your lovely country. And for us all I hope things get better soon.

Having read this I can see why people would escape to the Cayman Islands. The laws of extradition from the Cayman Islands are set by the Extradition Treaty Between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I'm not sure how other countries would stand though. Certainly, even if it was impossible to get all the money back people would feel a lot better if the people responsible were punished instead of living out a luxurious lifestyle which is possibly what is happening at the moment.

Very interesting reading, eanjay. But are they serious about that Illuminati thing?

The World War in the finance crisis, going on to day, is a diabolical, overt act against the populace of the world at large. Where the Secret Money powers in the world, the Illuminati and Bilderberg to name a few, are seeking to establish the New World Order, by setting up a world centralized financial control system. The governments of the world that are working on this plan willingly or unknowingly, will achieve this through the Central Banks in each country.

That world-conspiracy stuff is scary. Not because I believe it, but because I've heard it before, used to other ends. I think the problems have been caused by massive, unchecked greed and human corruption in high places. Because They Can. Still, there's a lot that's worth taking seriously in that article, further down the page. Especially this:

In many cases the average Icelander has so much debt that he breaks the No-Ponzi-Game condition. A No-Ponzi-game condition is a constraint that prevents over accumulation of debt, that is you can't spend more money than your life's income. But now we have also spent our children's life income.

As understand it, Iceland was where they first invented parliaments, so I'd be inclined to trust the Icelanders to sort their parliament out.

I saw that quote in the story from one of the organisers: "People went home to have dinner and then came back. [The protests] will continue". That sounds as if they've got their heads screwed on right.

I'm glad the Icelanders ARE protesting,--all very sad and it's very hard to see a quick solution. Unbelievable here and elsewhere that private individuals can get away with private fortunes and bonuses while the while system is shipwrecked.

On a lighter note: a feel-good story--Icelanders donate a container of wool to Grimsby (and other) pensioners:

Not much I can say, but I will second John MacKenzie... It comes from his (Skarpi's) heart, and that's a warm place.

Indeed, a kind and gentle soul.

Skarpi, my husband frequently talks about his wonderful trip to Iceland 7 or 8 years ago, and reflects on the fine people, the lifestyle, and the wonderful place it is. He and I were both shocked to learn of the bank failures, even in Iceland, and we send our very best wishes to you, your family, and all the good people of your land.

Burglaries and robberies in England and Wales have risen as a result of the economic downturn. I know that Iceland has a relatively low crime rate but would be interested to know if the financial crisis has affected that in any way.

With regard to the Cayman Islands, I believe that they are a haven for offshore banking, wherein one can hide billions of ill gotten dollars, safe from retrieval by ANY law enforcement agency.

That's why the bastards are there.

No good news there I'm afraid. Half the inhabitants are sitting on piles of stolen money, and it would probably take about fifty years to sort out whose is whose.

It's a most peculiar situation when a country full of capable, productive people is suddenly rendered financially comatose by a bank-created pyramid scheme, but that's what has happened, not just in Iceland, but in a number of places.

Banks invent money. They create it completely out of thin air by making loans...and POOF! The money suddenly appears out of thin air, and the bank earns interest on it from that moment on. The more fictional money they create this way, the more interest they can earn. If they can persuade many people to borrow irresponsibly, then they will make even more money from the interest charges those people must pay them. If the situation gets so out of hand that thousands of people default on their debts...then the bubble of phony money finally bursts and the whole pyramid collapses. The whole society is then stricken.

How do the banks recover from their busted ponzi scheme? They get the government to bail them out! Who does the government borrow money from to bail out the banks? Why, from the banks, of course! Did I just hear a giant POOOF! ??? Why, another trillion dollars just appeared out of thin air. The banks lent it to the government so that that government could bail out the banks.

Who will eventually pay to service the resultant debt? The general public...through either taxes or the cutback of social services or both.

Even the Ferengi never had the "lobes" to come up with a scheme this fraudulent and insane. ;-)

They are right about that too Sakrpi. The pound is sinking without trace on the foreign exchange markets. Every day comes news of another 300 or 400 people made redundant, or another big firm calling in the receivers.
Car plants are on temporary closures, and the Social bill is rising faster than the tax take is falling.
We are in the shit too.
Next stop is the IMF.

Good news I hope!

Iceland Prime Minister Resigns

I hope this means some new cleaner leadership will be elected in May. And that things start to improve long before then.

From what I've been reading in various places, it looks to me like Icelanders, through innovation and resourcefulness, are changing their country's direction in ways that will make it an even better place than it was before. I expect that a lot of people will experience difficulties in the short term, but it looks to me like Iceland is going to come out of this situation in very good shape in the long run.

A smaller nation should, in theory, recover quicker than a large one.
