Subject: Mudcat Survey
From: cloudstreet
Date: 04 Feb 09 - 02:55 AM

I am surveying the members of Mudcat as part of my postgraduate study into Community Folk Heritage. The survey is part of a comparison of Mudcat with another online musical community, The Session (www.thesession.org).

If you would like to help me learn more about Mudcat, who catters are and why they like to be involved in this wonderful online phenomenon, follow this link:

Online Musical Communities Survey

Unless you choose otherwise, your contribution will be anonymous.

If you'd like to know more before taking part, please email me at john@cloudstreet.org.

With thanks,

John Thompson
(PS. I cleared this thread with Max prior to posting)

Done - but can I point out a small error? Q.11 reads "If you answered "yes" to question 9.... "

I'm pretty sure this should say "question 10". Might confuse some people!

I'm a sucker for these surveys - however, the format is very easy to complete(well I suppose it had to be!)and it only takes 5 mins to complete. When I went to Uni in the '70's I don't recall hearing of degrees in Community Folk Heritage. At that time, this
would have involved much time visiting bars and pubs in order to meet folkies and gather material - wonder if a grant was available?

Yes, it's an interesting survey with good questions, and I'll be keen to see the results.

I hope everybody will take the few minutes necessary to fill it in - it's easy and non-intrusive. Online cyber-communities are something new in society, and this sort of analysis could be quite useful.

Sorry to be picky John but I'm a bit confused by Q. 12. Yes, I do have a "real-world" community in folk music but it doesn't meet the same needs as the online musical community. Yes or No?

Also regarding "real world" communities, I would have welcomed a chance to expand on my No. I happen to be living where there are few if any opportunities but in other circumstances, eg back in London or Paris instead of being in the UAE, it would be different.

Or maybe it's just my fault for being a temporary expat.

HI Colin and Mr Snail.

First of all, Mr Snail. I'm really after a "no" in your case. I'm investigating whether there are "real-world" groups that take the place of the online experience.

With respect to both, I'm happy to receive some expansion of your experiences by email, if you're prepared to offer them. If you'd like to remain anonymous, just make that clear in the email and I will even delete your identifying info and just store the body of the email for the purposes of the paper.

Email to john@cloudstreet.org

Thanks again for taking the time to consider the survey.

John

Just one thing, I have several "real world musical" communities, three morris teams, a dedicated song club, a choir, three music sessions plus other less frequent associations. It gets a bit difficult to decide how to answer how often I meet them!

I did it,

A little feedback for you, John. On surveys, it is very helpful to have an "Other" category and space for explanations in every question because surveys don't reflect the subtleties of real life. For instancem use patterns (How often do you visit the site?). Well, sometimes I don't visit for several months at a time and then I will have a lot of questions about something and visit several times a day for awhile. Not being able to check multiple answers or comment renders my answer useless because whatever I choose from the list is inaccurate.

Other than that, it was pretty painless

Completed. I have to say I'm not sure what you're trying to do here, & in particular why there's the dual focus on The Session and the Mudcat Cafe. I found some of the questions very difficult to answer because of this: I've been 'on' the Mudcat for less than a year, but on The Session for 2-3 years; I currently visit The Session about once a month, the Mudcat daily; and so on. If you wanted participants to answer about their *primary* online community, you should have specified this. Conversely, if you wanted users of both to answer on both, you should have duplicated the questions.

Interesting, though. I think the key difference between online and real-world is there's much more distance and much more intimacy online - you can spill your guts with confidence, because it feels that much less 'real'. That's just my perception, though - I'll be interested to know what you come up with.

Many thanks to all of those who have completed the survey so far. The count has just passed 400 (running roughly 60% Mudcat visitors).

I plan at this stage to leave the survey online and accessible for a month, closing it down on the 3rd of March.

I appreciate all of the various perspectives people are bringing to the survey, and will endeavour to incorporate at least the spirit of all the various contributions into my analysis, comparing these two communities.

I haev finally succumbed to temptation and went to look at thesession.

Now I see why I had never heard of it - it's for Irish tunes. That comes in about zero on my interest scale, marginally above bluegrass ones.

Just finish it. And I, too, would be interested in seeing the results.

I'm not familiar with thesession, but I intend to check it out.

Thanks for that RB... good to know. You wouldn't care to add Scottish, Appalachian and Old Timey so I can rest completely easy?

No Zen, I occasionally listen to Scottish tunes.

And VT - (1) that's not folk, it's contemporary, and (2) it's a song not a tune.

RB
John Prine (born October 10, 1946, in Maywood, Illinois) is an American country/folk singer-songwriter.

If the story told by Paradise as well as the melody not bluegrass, well it comes near enough for the definition of bluegrass I understood in the 70's when I was listening to Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels and John Prine. All playing on the bluegrass hour of the one and only radio station I could get in West Virginia.

As to it being a song and not a tune that's true.

BTW did you know that your tendancy for pedantry is hanging out? Better put that sucker away.

I note Arnie's comments about possible research in pubs & bars. This certainly happens in our neck of the woods, and strangely enough it is also John Thompson's neck of the woods (part of the year, anyway). Perhaps this clears up some questions as to "why"?

We've passed 500 responses and I particularly appreciate the extent to which people are prepared to be open about their views.

Couldn't be arsed to do it, but I am keeping the pen anyway.
No, seriously, did it last week - doddle.
Like others, I'd be keen to see the results.
We can then debate them in a separate thread, spiced with the usual abusive judgmental comments towards each other. Or preferably without them.

I did it, but like others I was a bit perplexed about comparing this to any "real world" group I'm involved in. There are some people I talk face to face about musicological matters with, but most of my real-world involvement is in actual performance in sessions - we may talk about tunes or songs in between playing them, but that's not the main point.

Interesting to see all that 'said' in one place. Max even gets 90% of the details correct... *grin* But you cant expect a busy administrator to follow ALL the undercurrents.
