Subject: widow malone From: j.Thomas Date: 08 Jul 99 - 12:47 PM "Did you hear of the Widow Malone ahone! Who lived ion the town of Athlone alone Oh! She melted the hearts, Of the swains in those parts, So lovely was Widow Malone ahone" Anyone out there know this song? Popular in the US ca.1840s and certainly before that date. Subject: DTADD: Widow Malone From: Frank Maher Date: 08 Jul 99 - 01:37 PM THE WIDOW MALONE Did You hear of the Widow Malone, ohone! Who lived in the Town of Athlone?ohone! Oh!She Melted the Hearts of the Swains in Them Parts, So Lovely the Widow Malone, ohone! So Lovely the Widow Malone. Of Lovers She had a full Score,or more, And Fortunes They all had galore,in Store; From the Minister down to the Clerk of the Crown, All were Courting the Widow Malone, ohone! All were Courting the Widow Malone. But so Modest was Mistress Malone,'twas known, That no one could see Her alone, ohone! Let Them Ogle and Sigh,They could ne'er catch Her Eye, So Bashful the Widow Malone, ohone! So bashful the Widow Malone. 'Till one Mister O'Brien, from Clare--how Square! It's little for Blushing They Care down There, Put His Arm 'round Her Waist--gave Ten Kisses at Laste-- "Oh,"says He:"You're My Molly Malone,My Own!" "Oh,"says He:"You're My Molly Malone." And the Widow They all thought so Shy,My Eye! Ne'er Thought of a Simper or Sigh, for why? Oh!"Lucius"says She,"since You've now made so free, You may Marry Your Mary Malone, ohone! You may Marry Your Mary Malone. There's a Moral contained in My Song, not wrong, And one Comfort,It's not very Long, but Strong-- If for Widows You Die,learn to Kiss, not to Sigh, For They're all like Sweet Mistress Malone, ohone! For They're all like Sweet Mistress Malone. |
Subject: RE: widow malone From: J.Thomas Date: 08 Jul 99 - 04:00 PM Hi Frank, Thanks for helping on this, unfortunately, I wasn't very clear on what I was/am looking for. I'm trying to find who wrote the song, or who performed it, or when it was popular in the US, if it is based on some other folk tune, etc. I have had no luck in researching it on the Internet. I have the words and music and have no other background-except that my words and music come from the 1840s! Do you know any of the answers to the above questions:) Thanks for your help! John |
Subject: RE: widow malone From: Dick Wisan Date: 11 Jul 99 - 11:30 PM I don't know if this is apposite, but I have it on a 10-inch 78 in volume 2 of "Folk Songs and Ballads" by Susan Reed. It was issued by RCA as M1107. I got it in the middle 1940's, when it can't have been more than a few years old at. I wouldn't say it was exactly popular at the time, though. |
Subject: RE: widow malone From: Dick Wisan Date: 11 Jul 99 - 11:38 PM Ooof! Sorry. But, while I'm doing this, let me add the observation that the words Frank Maher supplied are exactly the same as the ones on my Susan Reed record. |
