Subject: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Wesley S Date: 22 May 09 - 09:58 AM The new aircraft carrier George HW Bush was been delivered. I just wonder how many sailors are going to jump at the chance to serve on a ship that could end up being a target. I wonder if anyone considered that at all. Let's hope it doesn't get assigned to the Persian Gulf. Bush delivered!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Dead Horse Date: 22 May 09 - 10:31 AM With 6000 personnel aboard, there will be almost as much crap in the heads as there was in the ships namesake :-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Teribus Date: 22 May 09 - 10:57 AM And if assigned to the Persian Gulf Wesley S what is going to hit it?? Think carefully, the Soviets bankrupted themselves five times trying to solve that little problem and CVN 77 will be damn sight more capable than anything that they had to face. |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Bill D Date: 22 May 09 - 11:28 AM Do note...this is the FIRST Bush.... |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Wesley S Date: 22 May 09 - 11:36 AM Well Teribus - would you want to be on shore leave in a city in the middle east with that ships insignia on your uniform? The aircraft carrier may be safe - and that can be debated too { remember the Cole? } - but is the crew going to be safe? |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: pdq Date: 22 May 09 - 11:49 AM All U.S. servicemen are targets in Islamic countries throughout the world. This has been true since (at least) 1967 when our support for Israel resulted in that country's victory over the Arab World. Our boys will wear their uniforms proudly. They always have. |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: katlaughing Date: 22 May 09 - 11:53 AM That is obscene. I hope the next one isn't named after the little shrub. That would be even more obscene. Comparing 1967 to 2009 is like apples and oranges...there's so much more technology, more hate fuelled by baby bush, and more instantaneous communication with action, there's just no comparison. Our troops are much more vulnerable in new ways than they were then. |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Wesley S Date: 22 May 09 - 11:57 AM It's just too soon to name a ship after a bush. The ship is valuable but the sailors are priceless. Why place them in danger by painting a target on their back? |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: gnu Date: 22 May 09 - 02:33 PM So, a suicide attack on the Bush might get them extra bush? |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Ebbie Date: 22 May 09 - 04:20 PM Oh ho, gnu. |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: bubblyrat Date: 22 May 09 - 04:21 PM If you were sailing close-hauled and trying to circle the new carrier, would you be "beating about the Bush" ?? |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Joe Offer Date: 22 May 09 - 05:20 PM Looks like they've been naming carriers after Republican Presidents. The USS Ronald Reagan is another Nimitz class boat like the Bush, and there's a whole new Gerald R. Ford class coming. But hey, look at the USS William Jefferson Clinton CVS1. As a pacifist, I'm rather proud of the Clinton. And as a pacifist, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I'm fascinated by military ships, aircraft, and other equipment. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: pdq Date: 22 May 09 - 05:47 PM The USS William Jefferson Clinton CVS1 is an odd ship indeed. The width was determined by the maximum allowed for a double-wide trailer in the state of Arkansas. It's male personnel, in the spirit of Zumwalt-Clinton decrees, are allowed to ware dresses in public, especially blue ones. The USS William Jefferson Clinton CVS1 has not proven reliable in practice as it seems to have a fauly guidance system. |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Richard Bridge Date: 22 May 09 - 06:22 PM I suggest that it is probably wiser to name naval vessels either: - 1. After heroes of your country. This does not include the mentally handicapped (Reagan) or those morally challenged on important issues (like war, not like sex) (Shrub II); or 2. After classical heroes - the Bellerophon, Romulus, Remus, Leander, Thor, etc etc. |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: gnu Date: 22 May 09 - 06:38 PM No ho, Ebbie... them's virgins. |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Teribus Date: 23 May 09 - 04:16 AM "I just wonder how many sailors are going to jump at the chance to serve on a ship that could end up being a target." - Wesley S You are specifically talking about the ship Wesley - "..the chance to serve on a ship that could end up being a target." is a bit different from saying: "I just wonder how many sailors are going to jump at the chance to serve on a ship that could end up in making them targets because of its name" - TRUE?? Besides Wesley S, US naval personnel do not wear cap tallies as RN personnel do, i.e. you cannot immediately identify which ship a US sailor belongs to from his uniform. If you had detailed knowledge of badges denoting specialist qualifications you may be able to deduce which ships they might belong to. RN sailors on the other hand have bands round their caps that state clearly HMS ILLUSTRIOUS, HMS IRON DUKE, etc. |

Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: EBarnacle Date: 24 May 09 - 11:22 AM When they create the George W. Bush, will it have a chicken as its logo? |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Greg F. Date: 24 May 09 - 04:53 PM Always wondered why they don't just name military hardware after serial killers / mass murderers: The U.S.S. David R. Berkowitz. The U.S.S. Colonel John Chivington. The U.S.S Richard Franklin Speck. Sound pretty good, don't they? And there should be, if there isn't already, the U.S.S. Henry Kissinger. |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Peter T. Date: 24 May 09 - 04:59 PM Hard to imagine what Harry Truman would have thought (and said pungently) about having an aircraft carrier named after him (which they did). Really, how pathetic. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 24 May 09 - 07:49 PM Aren't boats supposed to be female anyway? I've never heard of one referred to as "he". |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Greg F. Date: 25 May 09 - 08:53 AM Well, perhaps Daddy Bush was a cross-dresser- like J. Edgar Hoover. |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Mooh Date: 25 May 09 - 08:58 AM The Bush League team wins again, the cost of which would surely have a greater peace dividend if it were spent on the environment, education, health care, homelessness, and maybe peace. Peace, Mooh. |

Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Little Hawk Date: 26 May 09 - 11:19 AM Canada should do this too. Why don't we have a battlecruiser named the HMCS Joe Clark yet? |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Wesley S Date: 26 May 09 - 12:03 PM Actually the HCMS Celine Dion would stike fear in my heart. |
Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: Little Hawk Date: 26 May 09 - 02:19 PM How about the HMCS Rita McNeil? I can just picture that ship, surrounded by a flotilla of hardworking tugboats. |

Subject: RE: BS: Aircraft Carrier George HW Bush From: GUEST,Jack The Sailor Date: 27 May 09 - 10:23 AM If the Japanese Navy exercises with the GHW they'd better watch for unwanted emanations. Also Rick Perry who's been talking about secession. "Read my lips, No more Texas." |
