Been going on for years and years, Bobert. The idea is that a masturbating hanging man gets a really, really big one on and enjoys a massive climax. Tying the other head up helps to keep it get bigger and bigger by preventing the blood flow from returning to the bod the first time. Kinky, yeah. Cops see it a lot with teenage boys, in fact they usually suspect it if they find a teen boy who's hung himself -- and lots of times they have good reason, like sex pix strewn around and his tool a-dangling out of his pants. In fact, the person who usually does this sort of thing IS a teenage boy or a guy in their very early 20s. Some guys get away with it, but all too often they, shall we say?, get carried away....

Give it a shot Bobertz......Maybe you'll like it. Try half a dozen Viagra first, followed by an OD of Vitamin E and three dozen oysters.   Then double up on the knots and I figure you'll either die or blow the back wall out of your closet!

AUTOEROTIC ASPHYXIATION. Google it...

I understand that B&D folks especially like it. Sometimes they do it, not autoerotically, but in a twosome.

Nothing new. You never heard of it as a social worker?!?!?

Ask any urban cop.

I tend to prefer simpler pleasures.

I mean, wotthehell! Sex the old fashioned way (with a partner of the opposite gender) may rarely be lethal, but it can sometimes be dangerous enough!!

I mentioned in the obit thread that this is common in the death statistics. They say suicide, but chance are good that this was involved. I had an acquaintance years ago who it turns out died with a plastic bag over his head for the same reason. He was in his mid-30s. It doesn't get mentioned in the news report, but word gets around.

It's an accidental death but seems to be ruled suicide to spare the family's feelings.

I heard of this first back in the '80's when I met the widow of a man who died this way. He was in is 30's. They had a daughter about 8 yrs old. It was pretty awkward whenever people would ask with concern about her husband's accidental death. I don't think it's always hanging... self choking with something around the neck, not always hanging. Scary that people do this.

Sadly, when it comes to sex, if it's possible, it's been tried. I learned about a lot during 2 years working at an 'enlightened' adult bookstore. And the internet has made it possible for like-minded people to find each other, and for others to 'discover' stuff they never knew existed.
It's a real cultural shock for many, and it's hard to know how it will all play out, since there is VERY little in education to explain & put things into perspective to help young folks to sort it out.

I first learned of it back in the early '60s, from a book in the local library.

The book warned against it and I was never really tempted to try it even without the warning, no matter how much ol' hormones were raging at the time.

There was a television series on HBO some time back called "Six Feet Under." It won an Emmy and a Golden Globe award, but I didn't see it until, on someone's recommendation, I watched a few episodes on NetFlix DVDs. It was about the very dysfunctional Fischer family who ran a funeral home. The first episode began with the accidental death of the funeral director, and his two sons inherited the business.

Weird series!!

Anyway, each episode began with someone's death, and within the first five minutes of the episode, the victim wound up at the Fischer Mortuary, and the story took off from there.

One episode began with a man stringing a rope up, standing on a chair, putting a noose around his neck, and unzipping his fly. . . .

Really weird series!! Very well done, but weird!

I don't think I can cope too well with 2009. The humans have gone nuts.

Couldn't we just bring back Love? The world was such a nicer place when we had Love, not just Sex. I feel that for so many young people, it's become nothing more than a physical function and that's sooooo sad.

God, we've lost something precious, haven't we.

"God, we've lost something precious, haven't we?"

Not all of us. The majority still have mostly 'standard' ideas about sex & love. (Although 'standard' is a pretty relative term. I remember reading a quote once that said "Excessive sex is what is done by anyone who does it more than YOU do.")

The same ability to dream & create that make humans 'above' the animals also can lead them into realm the animals never approach. We have brains that can contemplate deviation, and WE are responsible to use those brains to monitor ourselves. It can be quite a task.....

This is where Homo sapiens fall off the turnip truck. We have advanced intelligence that often just gets in the way of "doing the what comes naturally." As the late, great, Allen Sherman noted in "The Rape of the A.P.E.," only man practices what he calls "thinkery-fuckery." Do you think a wart hog is bothered by premature ejaculation?   Do pumas look for new and exciting ways to practice the act of sex. When the smell of a bitch in heat is in the air, dogs will happily hump anything available and never think twice......or indeed once!

On the other hand, humans have a laundry list a mile long of sexual dysfunction. We have a FIVE mile laundry list of ways to address the first list. I'm sure there is probably something that hasn't been tried yet but to tell you the truth, I hate to even try and make up something funny because it has probably been done somewhere.........

I agree with Lizzie humanity has gone mad and we have lost something precious.

A lot of dangerous sexual activity is the result of psychological stress and conditioning by the "wonderful" pornography industry, which is all encompassing.

I also agree that a man, a woman, love and the desire to reproduce, can never be supplanted.

"Are men programmed to want sex, and women programmed to want love?"

In strictly biological terms they are both "programmed", as are all animals, to promote their genetic material through procreation. The male, as inseminator, is advantaged in this quest by inseminating as much as possible whereas the female is advantaged by providing the best conditions for the survival of the carrier of her genetic material. In the terminology of our social structure that would translate to sex for the male and love, being the glue for the security and stability of the social unit, for the female.

Or something like that.

Pornography and I am sure sexual "deviance" seem to have existed for as long as humans have. For "deviant" just substitute "different" and accept that we all are?

I don't understand your remark about pornography existing as long as humanity, are you referring to fertility symbols etc?

Hard core pornography seems to me a modern invention and something completely different.....abuse of our minds and bodies for financial reward.

It was a well-enough-known kink in the UK decades ago that it forms the opening sequence of the film "The Ruling Class" (1972).

Maybe somebody can do a Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon to link Carradine with Peter O'Toole.

Pornography has been around for centuries. No, not fertility statues and symbols. It got a real boost during the Victorian era due to the repressive attitudes prevalent at the time, but it existed long before then.

Nothing new. Nothing that can be effectively stopped

Not that I approve of pornography. I don't approve of people getting drunk on their butts seven nights a week either, but look how well Prohibition worked out.

Any of you ever hear of, or see, the Japanese movie "In the Realm of the Senses"? Late '70s or early '80s. I made the mistake of paying admission to be subjected to it. The fact that it was hardcore wasn't the problem. The entire "plot" is a guy and his mistress getting more and more "carried away". It ends with her strangling him fatally while "riding" on top, and then, in highly realistic depiction, cutting off "everything" with a butcher knife. Fade to text saying that the police found her wandering around a few days later, carrying "what she had cut off" in a basket. I can't imagine any male being glad that he had seen that movie.

1. I can't imagine any intelligent person recommending AES as a good idea.
2. As an offhand example related to determining what is "deviant": the great Pat Robertson has, in print, noted that oral sex is not really appropriate for Christian folks because (approximate quote) "It's something that homosexual people do a lot". (Remember that Robertson considered himself qualified to run for President?)
3. Once everyone knew the intellectual distinctions that separated man from all other animals. Little by little, the old lines have been muddied by new discoveries. I think I've sussed out the one absolute distinction:

Of all the animals, only human beings have ever worried about whether it is morally right to lick each others genitals.

I was aghast when I first read on Yahoo about how he died--. I even mentioned it in another thread.

But I'm left wondering what a friend of mine's grandparents were doing. Old granddad had a wooden leg--and from the way they both were found, it was obvious they died during sex. They never were sure of what killed him, but she, the papers and the radio and the TV and the coroner all said, had died of terminal slivers. Oh, the humanity!!

WYSIWYG/Susan: No need for the cop to be urban. Some years ago a friend of my killed himself that way in the wilds of Louisa County, Virginia. The sheriff knew all about it.

*

frogprince: I have heard, also, that human beings, alone among the animals, can learn to throw things accurately.

However, there are machines that can do that. A thing that (I have heard) no other animal *and no machine* can do is pick up a 6-32 screw & a 6-32 hex nut from a tray full of both and put the nut on the screw. We, however, can do it in the dark. Somehow, that ability was selected for while we were running over the African savanna with massive curly hair.

A mad world, my masters!

It was a well-enough-known kink in the UK decades ago that it forms the opening sequence of the film "The Ruling Class" (1972).

Maybe somebody can do a Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon to link Carradine with Peter O'Toole.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
It wouldn't be fair to play the Six Degrees game without Kevin Bacon so here's one that links Carradine to O'Toole going through Bacon.

David Carradine w/ Uma Thurman - Kill Bill Vol. 2
Uma Thurman w/ Fred Ward - Henry and June
Fred Ward w/ Kevin Bacon - Tremors
Kevin Bacon w/ Donald Sutherland - JFK
Donald Sutherland w/ Anthony Quayle - The Eagle Has Landed
Anthony Quayle w/ Peter O'Toole - Lawrence of Arabia

Auto-erotic Asphyxiation has become the thrill of choice for young boys - some as young as nine. Parents are warned to watch for symptoms including bruises around the neck, drowsiness from lack of oxygen, ties and ropes around bedposts, etc. The news has gotten around that it is an easy "high". It sounds funny until you hear the statistics on accidental deaths among early teens as a result of trying it alone. 1000 people per year is the estimate but not known for sure because families clean up death scenes before the police arrive. Often the death is called a suicide when it is actually an accident.
I can't imagine the horror of coming home and finding your son hanging in a closet nude and surrounded by porn. Geez!

Both mechanical asphyxiation and "sniffing" of various substances appear to produce very similar results. Many of the "inhalants" work primarily by displacing oxygen resulting in deprivation of the brain; but some of the popular ones additionally induce "poisons" into the blood circulation.

In a normal male erection a fairly significant amount of blood is diverted to other places, so asphyxiation by mechanical means or by displacement may produce symptoms similar to the "arousal phase" of sexual activity, and the sudden restoration of normal flow to the brain at the end is part of the "climax." A similar effect probably appears in females; but I haven't encountered a qualified spokeswoman with whom to discuss the subject, and suspect that it may typically be a smaller and less important effect in the process.

Unfortunately, the "effects" during the oxygen deprivation (arousal) stage also are similar to what may be observed or reported in some strokes, with the same, often permanent, result - death of some cells in the brain. Extended asphyxiation even when not resulting in accidental death can cause brain damage; and the damage can be cumulative when repeated. Either practice - strangulation or inhalants - can and does produce both dead children and "child zombies" still living but unable function even to the extent of responding to caregivers.

Having seen three such zombie children in the course of "support counselling" for a friend in treatment for drug abuse, I do not wish to see another. All three of these happened to be female, between 14 and 16 years of age, and - as one counsellor remarked - "would make lovely house plants" - but displayed no visible "human" functions. The effects were permanent, and there is NO TREATMENT that can restore function. All three of these were "sniffers," but mechanical asphyxiation reportedly can produce the same or very similar "undead" subjects.

In most of the reported instances of mechanical asphyxiation there is the appearance of an obvious link to "sexual activity," but the "high" experienced from depriving the brain of oxygen may be sufficient to tempt those too young to associate it with sex to repeat and extend the practice. It possibly is more common to see non-sexual "sniffers," but with both "methods" it's questionable whether it should be called "sex" when it happens in kids too young even to masturbate - as it does both with inhalants and with mechanical "chokings."

John

I am almost sure that dolphins have been reported indulging in recreational sex.

Recreational sex has been well-documented among many species. Bonobo chimps are the poster children for recreational sex in the animal world. And then there is the gay sex in the animal world.

I heard an author interviewed a couple of years ago about a book, but I don't remember what it was called. A quick search came up with an article by a different author that covers much of the same territory. The effeminate sheep and other problems with Darwinian sexual selection.

Ideas evolve; the world views that we hold today are different than in Victorian times or Revolutionary War times or during the Crusades, and these are different from world views in Asia and Africa for comparable periods. Ideas about religion, literature, politics, social issues are a social/cultural accretion. But to think that people in earlier eras didn't figure out many of the same things we know about sex today is naive. The big ideas are in the cerebrum, layered in through culture and formal education. The limbic system (mammalian brain) or the brain stem is where the sex comes from.

This discussion of sex has been channeled through the modern cerebrum, and apparently a lot of folks are relatively unaware of what the mammalian brain can get up to.

Autoerotic asphyxiation was used as a plot device in an old X Files episode, and it also figured in the movie version of Rising Sun (I don't remember if it was in the book, as well). Newspaper accounts of Caradine's death have been very circumspect in their reporting. Suicide by hanging is all I'd seen before this strand appeared.

Regarding comments above about the history of pornography, there are lots of pornographic (i.e. sexually explicit) wall paintings from Pompeii, usually assumed to be decorations in brothels. Well- and extensivly illustrated in Jean-Claude Marcade's 1965 book, Roma Amor. Companion volume of classical Greek erotica by the same author is titled Eros Kalos. Sexually explicit images in religious context were part of these cultures, as well, but I think it is fair to characterize most of what Marcade illustrates as good ol' secular encouragement rather than cult.

Nothing new under the sun when it comes to portraying eroticism: CLick Here..an excerpt:

Greek art often portrays sexual activity, but it is impossible to distinguish between what to them was illegal or immoral since the ancient Greeks did not have a concept of pornography. Their art simply reflects scenes from daily life, some more sexual than others. Carved phalli can be seen in places of worship such as the temple of Dionysus on Delos, while a common household item and protective charm was the herm, a statue consisting of a head on a square plinth with a prominent phallus on the front. The Greek male ideal had a small penis, an aesthetic the Romans later adopted.

Surely the practice of AEA goes back much farther than most realise. I saw one study which said it probably came about from observing what happened when a man was hanged and started out in the 1600s, but that's in the Western world. I would imagine it could be found in the history of Eastern cultures, too.

I don't remember when I first read about this. I know it didn't shock me as much as learning what a "snuff" film was. Truly sickening.

Continuing from my earlier post: "Folks, the first thing you have to realize is that human biological urges are not exactly governed 100% by the intelligent forebrain", my amazing, integrating brain tells me that the 4 or 5 really disparate dysfunctions I've been learning about of late connect in one important place: the extent to which an individual's forebrain does or does not "manage*" the limbic brain.

WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO MEASURE THAT. (*Communicate with, manage, control, direct, monitor)

If we could-- we, as a species, would be able to predict behavior much more accurately. We, as individuals, would be in a much better position to live our best intentions. We, when we are people responsible to our societies for issues of safety, would have a fallback methodology to buttress our legal decisions.

We, as a society, however, would ALSO have another slippery slope of ethics to navigate-- with great thought and care.

"Nature vs. Nurture" is another poorly-understood area of humanity. Again, I have long integrated them: "Nature AND Nurture" is so much more likely, and so much simpler. I notice that the old dichotomy is increasingly replaced by this combined paradigm.

From SRS:

It's an accidental death but seems to be ruled suicide to spare the family's feelings.

I don't know about other families, but in my case, I think being told that a loved one had committed suicide would make me more upset, because to get to that point, it would mean there had been years of misery and sadness before that.

I'd never do "breath control" sex, myself, because it is so dangerous. But I still understand that depriving the brain of oxygen does create a sensation of euphoria (which is why people try to get high sniffing glue, paint fumes, and the like). Idiotic, and dangerous, but still striving for pleasure instead of giving up on the hope for it.

(Then again, I think of myself as a sexual liberal)

"The Greeks didn't even have a word for 'pornography'!"

Perhaps. Pornos in ancient Greek means catamite, sodomite, or fornicator; porneia would be fornication or prostitution. I don't have the dictionaries on hand (no pun intended) to see how the classical Greeks would describe sexually explicit art. Their vocabulary was more limited than ours, but even if the construction "pornography," which combines the Greek word pornos with the Greek word graphia [i.e. the drawing or writing of], is modern, you can bet those sly ol' Greeks, who were painting pictures of the stuff, would have had a way of expressing what it was they were painting, looking at, and presumably thinking about and doing.

Sorry about that. I tend to take questions about classical philology seriously.

On the other hand, years ago, in a session in which scholarly papers about ancient eroticism and sexually explicit art were being discussed, some old codger got up during the question and answer period and congratulated a young woman who had just read a paper on classical Greek depictions of oral sex. "You are to be congratulated," he said, "for presenting your subject matter so tastefully."

And then he realized what he said.

And the best part is that after turning beet red, he still had the presence of mind to follow up and say "Well, I guess this proves once again that the tongue is mightier than the sword."

Really happened.

There's also a presupposition with some posts that kinky sex involving whatever it is that's your thing, but specifically in this instance strangulation, is distinct and separate from love and tenderness. Of course it isn't. People who are in love with each other want to give each other as much pleasure as possible - I think I'd call that 'making love' irrespective of whether it involved knives, ropes, or dominance & submission etc. It's just a different kind of 'romance' from the commonly recognised kind. And is arguably *more* intimate, due to the higher levels of trust and openness it necessitates.

Assuming that kinky sex is distinct from romance, is akin to making the same assumptions about sex between homosexual partners being necessarily devoid of love.

In regards to strangulation, I recall watching a doco some time back about a married American couple into bondage - he was an expert with ropes and would string her up from trees in the backgarden. The husband described himself as 'a loving sadist', and controlled strangulation was her thing so that's what he did for her.

Please note that I have been severely chastized by my favorite editor for my misattribution in my (rather flippant) post at 07 Jun 09 - 08:53 PM.

It was pointed out that the quote about masturbation was NOT from "Jumpin' Jack Flash" but was instead from "Annie Hall."

I was forced to dig out the original floppy disks dating back to about 1998 and load them into her sewing machine (the only floppy disk reader we still have) in order to dump them to a thumb drive for transfer to current archives (on hard drives) so that I could refresh my memory and verify the veracity of her recollection.

Sorry about that, but to me Woody and Whoopie actually do sound a bit alike - at least when they're emoting arousal.

In order to ameliorate the situation, I was forced to play all 100 of the clips. They were originally a subversive creation circulated only among the community of microserfs. Our original copy came in a plain brown wrapper from "the community," sender unknown; but I believe most of the set was eventually released by the unofficial Windows Utilities group sometime early in the Win98 era.

I'd describe some of the other clips in the set; but I'm afraid I might make another misidentification and be limited to "the big M" for an even longer period before she is sufficiently placated to permit resumption of our customary abnormal activities.

Lizzie, I don't think you have to be 'damaged' to enjoy high levels of stimulation. It's why we have rollercoaster rides and horror films. Hell, people are 'naturally' into all kinds of things.

I like chilli chocolate and fast motorbikes, I also like very strong blue cheese. While I've not tried erotic strangulation (yet...) I don't find it a challenging idea that other normal people, do. For my own part, I suspect the risks would outweigh the benefits, but then I could say the same for me regarding mountain climbing, deep sea diving, or indeed any human activity that others are called to partake in which is high risk.

Love and joy, mean very different things to us all I guess. I might not think it a great idea, but if two people who love each other and are committed to each other, choose an alternative way to fulfill each other (which doesn't harm others), I would certainly not call it 'sick' simply because I didn't relate to it.

Maybe I come down somewhere between Liz and Crow Sister. I haven't been tied down to the four corners of the bed, or done that to anyone else; just haven't had any such inclination. If a couple get a kick out of that, or of using a silk whip that stings a little, I might "blink" in reaction; but I wouldn't really be "put off" at all, let alone appalled. On the other hand, doing something that you know costs a few brain cells every time, or, say, ending up in the emergency room to have a bottle or something extricated, suggests to me that you have a neurotic compulsion to...shall we say... try way too hard to get your jollies.

Guess what, Liz? I agree with that much completely. And apart from physical pain, I don't think it's loving for one partner to pressure another into something they're not comfortable with.

But there is so much that's so subjective. Anything but "missionary" is too "kinky" for some. Licking a trickle of chocolate syrup off a breast is too "kinky" for some. Jewelry pierced into genitals is too kinky for some, and I'm definitely one of that some. Sleeping nude is too kinky for some. I think putting on a pony halter and prancing around is about the dumbest thing I've ever heard of, but, if both people get a kick out of it, it isn't hurting a living soul.

Then again, if my wife decided she wanted to try "pony play", I'd probably go along with it for her sake...(Don't worry; it's not going to happen).

No, sorry Lizzie, you seem to have no comprehension of sexual excitement as distinct from romanticism. They are different, and both can be enjoyable (as far as I remember).

Personally, being strangled does not float my boat - but in most cases that is not the point of that game either. If it did, it would, and that's that. Whatever gets your rocks off, gets your rocks off. But the asphyxiation thing, the lack of oxygen slows down your brain (I am told) so the orgasm seems to last longer and be stronger.

Richard, you *never* ask a lady where she keeps her daffodil! Honestly, I'm surprised at you! LOL

"No, sorry Lizzie, you seem to have no comprehension of sexual excitement as distinct from romanticism."

Well, I have to admit that I wouldn't find it very romantic, or exciting come to that, to find my beloved hanging in the closet, turning blue, with a goofy grin on his face, whilst he played with his particulars, which he'd strung upwards pointing to the ceiling..

That is soooooooooooooo *not* a good look, Boys.....

Nope, I'm afraid you'll have to continue with the chocolates, but don't give them to Bill, 'cos he's gone to a distant place at the moment and presenting him with an entire box of Milk Tray right now, may prove more than a little dangerous! LOL

"It was the thought of the Chocolate, sent me off into orgasmic visions!"

Doggone, Lizzy; that's entirely too kinky for me!

Damned good question, Bobert. IMO, it's a Yanagisawa 901 Tenor Sax.

Oh. Lord; I just got a flashback from a past life:
San Diego, 1967; I got assigned late night shore patrol downtown. I never experienced as much weird in a year as during that one night. I just remembered the gal, perhaps a rather badly worn fortyish, we met just as we crossed a street. The only specific part of her slutty outfit that I remember for sure was the leopard skin micro skirt. The total scrap of nasally squaked conversation with her companion that I caught:

"I feel that rubbing a little on the inside of my thighs makes me sexier".

Forgive me, Lizzy; I am not, not, not either thinking or implying that you are anything like that. I don't even know for certain that she was referring to perfume.

If you can concentrate on the Angora something is wrong. Possibly the Barbara Cartand novel being read with the other hand is the problem.

"It's an accidental death but seems to be ruled suicide to spare the family's feelings."

Like CapriUni, I find this to be a sad statement - what does it say about our society if we consider having an unusual sexual fetish to be worse than suicidal depression?

"I can't imagine the horror of coming home and finding your son hanging in a closet nude and surrounded by porn. Geez!"

That would be horrible - but wouldn't it be even worse to find him hanging in a closet next to a note saying that his life was unbearable?

I consider a death from autoerotic asphyxiation to be the same kind of thing as a death from attempting to climb Mount Everest. Both are examples of people accepting extraordinary risks in pursuit of extraordinary thrills. It's unfortunate that when people play risky games - sexual or otherwise - they sometimes lose, but at least they died doing what they loved. It's nowhere near the tragedy of a person committing suicide.

Thanks, Crow Sister. I also think this was well said:

"Love and joy, mean very different things to us all I guess. I might not think it a great idea, but if two people who love each other and are committed to each other, choose an alternative way to fulfill each other (which doesn't harm others), I would certainly not call it 'sick' simply because I didn't relate to it."

But of course, Hank Williams Said It Best....
