I mentioned in the obit thread that this is common in the death statistics. They say suicide, but chance are good that this was involved. I had an acquaintance years ago who it turns out died with a plastic bag over his head for the same reason. He was in his mid-30s. It doesn't get mentioned in the news report, but word gets around.

It's an accidental death but seems to be ruled suicide to spare the family's feelings.

I heard of this first back in the '80's when I met the widow of a man who died this way. He was in is 30's. They had a daughter about 8 yrs old. It was pretty awkward whenever people would ask with concern about her husband's accidental death. I don't think it's always hanging... self choking with something around the neck, not always hanging. Scary that people do this.

Sadly, when it comes to sex, if it's possible, it's been tried. I learned about a lot during 2 years working at an 'enlightened' adult bookstore. And the internet has made it possible for like-minded people to find each other, and for others to 'discover' stuff they never knew existed.
   It's a real cultural shock for many, and it's hard to know how it will all play out, since there is VERY little in education to explain & put things into perspective to help young folks to sort it out.

There was a television series on HBO some time back called "Six Feet Under." It won an Emmy and a Golden Globe award, but I didn't see it until, on someone's recommendation, I watched a few episodes on NetFlix DVDs. It was about the very dysfunctional Fischer family who ran a funeral home. The first episode began with the accidental death of the funeral director, and his two sons inherited the business.

Weird series!!

Anyway, each episode began with someone's death, and within the first five minutes of the episode, the victim wound up at the Fischer Mortuary, and the story took off from there.

One episode began with a man stringing a rope up, standing on a chair, putting a noose around his neck, and unzipping his fly. . . .

Really weird series!! Very well done, but weird!

The male, as inseminator, is advantaged in this quest by inseminating as much as possible whereas the female is advantaged by providing the best conditions for the survival of the carrier of her genetic material. Any of you ever hear of, or see, the Japanese movie "In the Realm of the Senses"? Late '70s or early '80s. I made the mistake of paying admission to be subjected to it. The fact that it was hardcore wasn't the problem. The entire "plot" is a guy and his mistress getting more and more "carried away". It ends with her strangling him fatally while "riding" on top, and then, in highly realistic depiction, cutting off "everything" with a butcher knife. Fade to text saying that the police found her wandering around a few days later, carrying "what she had cut off" in a basket. I can't imagine any male being glad that he had seen that movie.

1. I can't imagine any intelligent person recommending AES as a good idea.
2. As an offhand example related to determining what is "deviant": the great Pat Robertson has, in print, noted that oral sex is not really appropriate for Christian folks because (approximate quote) "It's something that homosexual people do a lot". I was aghast when I first read on Yahoo about how he died--. I even mentioned it in another thread.

But I'm left wondering what a friend of mine's grandparents were doing. Old granddad had a wooden leg--and from the way they both were found, it was obvious they died during sex. They never were sure of what killed him, but she, the papers and the radio and the TV and the coroner all said, had died of terminal slivers. Oh, the humanity!!

Both mechanical asphyxiation and "sniffing" of various substances appear to produce very similar results. Many of the "inhalants" work primarily by displacing oxygen resulting in deprivation of the brain; but some of the popular ones additionally induce "poisons" into the blood circulation.

In a normal male erection a fairly significant amount of blood is diverted to other places, so asphyxiation by mechanical means or by displacement may produce symptoms similar to the "arousal phase" of sexual activity, and the sudden restoration of normal flow to the brain at the end is part of the "climax." A similar effect probably appears in females; but I haven't encountered a qualified spokeswoman with whom to discuss the subject, and suspect that it may typically be a smaller and less important effect in the process.

Unfortunately, the "effects" during the oxygen deprivation (arousal) stage also are similar to what may be observed or reported in some strokes, with the same, often permanent, result - death of some cells in the brain. Extended asphyxiation even when not resulting in accidental death can cause brain damage; and the damage can be cumulative when repeated. Either practice - strangulation or inhalants - can and does produce both dead children and "child zombies" still living but unable function even to the extent of responding to caregivers.

Having seen three such zombie children in the course of "support counselling" for a friend in treatment for drug abuse, I do not wish to see another. All three of these happened to be female, between 14 and 16 years of age, and - as one counsellor remarked - "would make lovely house plants" - but displayed no visible "human" functions. The effects were permanent, and there is NO TREATMENT that can restore function. All three of these were "sniffers," but mechanical asphyxiation reportedly can produce the same or very similar "undead" subjects.

In most of the reported instances of mechanical asphyxiation there is the appearance of an obvious link to "sexual activity," but the "high" experienced from depriving the brain of oxygen may be sufficient to tempt those too young to associate it with sex to repeat and extend the practice. It possibly is more common to see non-sexual "sniffers," but with both "methods" it's questionable whether it should be called "sex" when it happens in kids too young even to masturbate - as it does both with inhalants and with mechanical "chokings."

Recreational sex has been well-documented among many species. Bonobo chimps are the poster children for recreational sex in the animal world. And then there is the gay sex in the animal world.

I heard an author interviewed a couple of years ago about a book, but I don't remember what it was called. A quick search came up with an article by a different author that covers much of the same territory. The effeminate sheep and other problems with Darwinian sexual selection.

Ideas evolve; the world views that we hold today are different than in Victorian times or Revolutionary War times or during the Crusades, and these are different from world views in Asia and Africa for comparable periods. Ideas about religion, literature, politics, social issues are a social/cultural accretion. But to think that people in earlier eras didn't figure out many of the same things we know about sex today is naive. The big ideas are in the cerebrum, layered in through culture and formal education. The limbic system (mammalian brain) or the brain stem is where the sex comes from.

This discussion of sex has been channeled through the modern cerebrum, and apparently a lot of folks are relatively unaware of what the mammalian brain can get up to.

Newspaper accounts of Caradine's death have been very circumspect in their reporting. Suicide by hanging is all I'd seen before this strand appeared.

Regarding comments above about the history of pornography, there are lots of pornographic (i.e. sexually explicit) wall paintings from Pompeii, usually assumed to be decorations in brothels. I don't remember when I first read about this. I know it didn't shock me as much as learning what a "snuff" film was. Truly sickening.

"Nature vs. Nurture" is another poorly-understood area of humanity. Again, I have long integrated them: "Nature AND Nurture" is so much more likely, and so much simpler. I notice that the old dichotomy is increasingly replaced by this combined paradigm.

Perhaps. Pornos in ancient Greek means catamite, sodomite, or fornicator; porneia would be fornication or prostitution. I don't have the dictionaries on hand (no pun intended) to see how the classical Greeks would describe sexually explicit art. Their vocabulary was more limited than ours, but even if the construction "pornography," which combines the Greek word pornos with the Greek word graphia [i.e. the drawing or writing of], is modern, you can bet those sly ol' Greeks, who were painting pictures of the stuff, would have had a way of expressing what it was they were painting, looking at, and presumably thinking about and doing.

There's also a presupposition with some posts that kinky sex involving whatever it is that's your thing, but specifically in this instance strangulation, is distinct and separate from love and tenderness. Of course it isn't. People who are in love with each other want to give each other as much pleasure as possible - I think I'd call that 'making love' irrespective of whether it involved knives, ropes, or dominance & submission etc. It's just a different kind of 'romance' from the commonly recognised kind. And is arguably *more* intimate, due to the higher levels of trust and openness it necessitates.

Lizzie, I don't think you have to be 'damaged' to enjoy high levels of stimulation. It's why we have rollercoaster rides and horror films. Hell, people are 'naturally' into all kinds of things.

I like chilli chocolate and fast motorbikes, I also like very strong blue cheese. While I've not tried erotic strangulation (yet...) I don't find it a challenging idea that other normal people, do. For my own part, I suspect the risks would outweigh the benefits, but then I could say the same for me regarding mountain climbing, deep sea diving, or indeed any human activity that others are called to partake in which is high risk.

Love and joy, mean very different things to us all I guess. I might not think it a great idea, but if two people who love each other and are committed to each other, choose an alternative way to fulfill each other (which doesn't harm others), I would certainly not call it 'sick' simply because I didn't relate to it.

Guess what, Liz? I agree with that much completely. And apart from physical pain, I don't think it's loving for one partner to pressure another into something they're not comfortable with.

But there is so much that's so subjective. Anything but "missionary" is too "kinky" for some. Licking a trickle of chocolate syrup off a breast is too "kinky" for some. Jewelry pierced into genitals is too kinky for some, and I'm definitely one of that some. Sleeping nude is too kinky for some. I think putting on a pony halter and prancing around is about the dumbest thing I've ever heard of, but, if both people get a kick out of it, it isn't hurting a living soul.
