Subject: BS: Canucks... Romeo LeBlanc has passed. From: gnu Date: 24 Jun 09 - 05:02 PM Press. This is a sad day here. And, for any Canucks who know what he did in his political career. A champion of "the little guy." And a mover and shaker of the "big" politicians on behalf of the little guy. He served Canada well and with distinction. He will be sadly missed. RIP Romeo. |
Subject: RE: BS: Canucks... Romeo LeBlanc has passed. From: meself Date: 24 Jun 09 - 05:22 PM QUOTE: "In our separate villages we lived our separate lives in our separate worlds, except indeed when fire destroyed a barn. Then families with names like Cormier and Taylor worked shoulder to shoulder putting up a new one. When one family fell on hard times, another family was there to help." - LeBlanc's view of national unity on the day he became governor general as he used a metaphor based on his own childhood in L'Anse-aux-Cormier, a French Catholic village next door to an English Protestant village in New Brunswick. (From the CP obit.) RIP |
Subject: RE: BS: Canucks... Romeo LeBlanc has passed. From: gnu Date: 24 Jun 09 - 05:41 PM That's the New Brunswick I know and am proud of. The only officially bilingual province in Canada. BECAUSE of people like Romeo... and most of the people I grew up with. Fact is, the villages are not so separate as even he alluded to. Nor is the rest of Canada. Just the politicians and ignorance he fought against. A true hero. |

Subject: RE: BS: Canucks... Romeo LeBlanc has passed. From: gnu Date: 25 Jun 09 - 01:02 PM New Brunswick, "The Picture Province". Aptly named because of the diversity of vistas and wildlife. After the age of "Wood, Wind and Water", The Maritimes became the Hard Times provinces, the "have not" provinces, which is reversing somewhat now. My old man used to say, "The Picture Province, underdeveloped and overexposed." Let's hope Dominic can carry on the torch. |
Subject: RE: BS: Canucks... Romeo LeBlanc has passed. From: 3refs Date: 25 Jun 09 - 04:05 PM Isn't it funny how a guy who had to be begged and pleaded with to get more involved with politics becomes one that all should aspire to be more like. Romeo, Romeo, why arn't more like "you" Romeo! |
Subject: RE: BS: Canucks... Romeo LeBlanc has passed. From: Mooh Date: 26 Jun 09 - 07:14 AM Rest in peace, Romeo. (New Brunswick is beautiful on many levels, love the place.) Peace, Mooh. |
Subject: RE: BS: Canucks... Romeo LeBlanc has passed. From: gnu Date: 26 Jun 09 - 01:52 PM From The Ottawa Citizen... The pomp and circumstance of being the Queen's representative never touched LeBlanc's core. Pichette, who also worked for LeBlanc at Rideau Hall, remembers a Sunday morning in February when the Governor General appeared in the foyer. "There he was, the Governor General, with a wrench in his hand, wearing an awful checked lumberjack's sweater* and jeans — and he'd just been down trying to fix the furnace. "He said, 'I had to do it myself. I don't want to trouble people on a Sunday.'" * I assume this to be what we call a lumberjack shirt or doeskin shirt. It was a staple here for cold weather. |
