Subject: BS: Emigration - TO CANADA in 1920s From: GUEST,T.Mooney Date: 07 Jul 09 - 03:50 PM I wonder if anyone can help? I had relatives who "emigrated" to the USA in 1923 && '24. They had been on the losing side in the Irish Civil War and had no other choice. However the American Government had set a quota for Irish people and they were not included. Consequently they made their way to Quebec and eventually crossed into the US (illegally). Although I have tried to find their names on the various passenger lists from "Queenstown" , Glasgow and Liverpool I have had only partial success. Some are unrecorded and my quest is to try to discover by what route and by what means they were able to make it into the USA. Many such men worked for a winter in Canadian logging camps before "jumping" across the border. Do any mudcatters have relatives who had similar "adventures". I would dearly love to know. |

I found the record of my own grandparents' arrival in Quebec in 1927. |

Subject: RE: BS: Emigration - TO CANADA in 1920s From: gnu Date: 07 Jul 09 - 05:20 PM I am just gonna copy a bunch of addys and you can see if they lead you anywhere. I wish you luck. Many of my Irish and French relatives went to the US to work in the woods and whatever way back when. http://automatedgenealogy.com/censusnb51/index.jsp http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/index.jsp http://www.census-online.com/links/Canada/NB/ http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/census/search_census.asp http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nbken/Census.html http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nbken/Cen91HarDiv15d1.htm http://archives.gnb.ca/APPS/GovRecs/VISSE/default.aspx?culture=en-CA http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/02/02012202_e.html |
Subject: RE: BS: Emigration - TO CANADA in 1920s From: pdq Date: 07 Jul 09 - 07:02 PM Not just Irish. A young Englishman named William Henry Pratt moved to Canada in 1909 and worked his way across the country driving a truck and doing farmwork. He eventually resurfaced in Los Angeles as Boris Karloff. |
Subject: RE: BS: Emigration - TO CANADA in 1920s From: Willie-O Date: 08 Jul 09 - 07:52 AM You might find evidence of their arrival in Canada, but there's 3000 miles of border between Canada and the US and only in the past few years have they thought much about tightening it up. There have always been a million places you could just walk across, through the woods or across a frozen river, or go by boat.. I'd think your family oral history would be the most likely place to find where they crossed--cause there wouldn't be an official record, would there? Thanks for those links gnu. W-O |
Subject: RE: BS: Emigration - TO CANADA in 1920s From: GUEST,beachcomber Date: 08 Jul 09 - 07:21 PM Thanks a lot you blokes (all?) I will spend some time on those web sites gnu and bobad . I do know that some of them "crossed" (in a group) at Niagara, eventually, although on a previous attempt a Canadian manufacturers brand on a hat was sufficent to have them turned back. They had joined up with a bunch of "Day Trippers" from the US but I am unaware as to whether they had had aliaison in this case. It seems that this was a commonly organised ruse by the "Network" in the US. |
