Subject: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: JennieG Date: 13 Sep 09 - 09:36 PM While we are in TO next month John Prince will be performing at Acoustic Harvest folk club and we will be staying a short distance away, almost within walking distance, so of course we are planning on attending! We (Himself and I) were last in TO in Sep-Oct 2007 so we know our way around a little bit. We visited the ROM (fabulous), Bata Show Museum (that was fascinating), Textile Museum of Canada (I'm going again as there will be an exhibition of antique quilts), Niagara Falls (may not get there this time), walked a lot, spent time with our son and his Lovely Canadian Girlfriend - the reason for our visit. What else should we try to see? We may not have a car so will be restricted to public transport, we are staying in Victoria Park Avenue just north of Kingston Road and have a bus at the gate which takes us to the subway. Cheers JennieG |

Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: JennieG Date: 14 Sep 09 - 01:31 AM Thanks LH, I'll do that. Dunno about a wallaby although they are cute little fellers, but I could bring a wombat...... Q, I love people watching. I reckon it's THE best way to fill in time. Cheers JennieG |

Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: Folkiedave Date: 14 Sep 09 - 04:33 AM We too loved the Shoe Museum. And the trip on the sailing ship, near the CNN Tower. And travelling on the trams. Best of all. And Chinatown. |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: sian, west wales Date: 14 Sep 09 - 05:19 AM St Lawrence Market is great. Farther east, about where King merges with Front St there's the Distillery development - expensive, but interesting. Kensington Market/Street is also a good place to have a stroll. In fact, you can do Kensington and Art Gallery of Ontario and China Town all in the same walk, really. Queen Street West (sort of where Queen St crosses Bathurst) is also good, and that's only a few blocks south of the AGO. And Casa Loma is good if you like oddities. I think my mother told me once that "the old apple tree" (as in, "in the shade of the ...", which is Canadian-penned) is up in that part of TO as well but I can't remember where exactly and it's probably gone by now. sian |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: JennieG Date: 14 Sep 09 - 08:38 AM Sian, we visited Casa Loma and walked through the tunnel! The day we were there a quilt display was on, part of an annual auction to benefit breast cancer research - as a quilter, I enjoyed it. And don't mention Queen Street W to Himself, that's where the fabric shops are, one in particular I am hoping is still in business.......haven't sewn the fabric I bought last time yet.......we did get to the Distillery District but it was a bit late in the day, so not much seemed to be open. Love the story of the old apple tree, I have sung that song! Cheers JennieG |

Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: 3refs Date: 15 Sep 09 - 08:00 AM The real story of how Toronto got its name! It is not unusual for names to spread from place to place, and Toronto is no exception. The name reached its present location -- and spelling -- after journeys both linguistic and geographical in nature. Linguistically, it originated as the Mohawk phrase tkaronto, later modified by French explorers and map makers. Geographically, it moved 125 kilometres south from The Narrows, where today's Lake Simcoe empties into Lake Couchiching at the city of Orillia. Seeing as I'm from Orillia, this is important! So I'll refer to #%&%$#* by it's old name, and call it York! (Lord Simcoe hated aboriginal names, so he changed it to York) I was just down there last Friday to watch a football(not soccer) game between the Argonauts and the Hamilton Tiger Cats at the Rogers Centre(Sky Dome). Great game! Overtime in football is such a rarity. I really don't hate the place! It's just that when I go down there, I feel like I've been transported to another planet. "The Big City" is not for me, but I do go occasionally. My favorite venue to visit is when the Royal Winter Fair is on, but I don't think you'll be there for that! Any of the places that have been mentioned in other posts are fantastic places to VISIT! PS Hamilton's cheerleaders are grrrrreat! |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: bankley Date: 15 Sep 09 - 09:13 AM that's okay... just pick up the 'Entertainment' paper when you're there.. I believe it's called 'Now' and is free... it lists hundreds of interesting events, from clubs to concerts, galleries, films etc.. There's a lot going on in the Big Smoke.. |

Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: Big Mick Date: 16 Sep 09 - 12:43 PM Jennie, what dates are you there? I will be in Torunna during the week of September 28 for about 4 or 5 days. I would love to meet you and hubby. I will be pretty busy doing overdubs, and mixdown/mastering but I am sure we could squeek out some time. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: Little Hawk Date: 16 Sep 09 - 01:44 PM Whoa! Hey, Mick, let's see if we can get together at some point and play a few tunes in late September and yak about what a jagoff Spaw is and stuff like that. I should be able to get down to Tronna for a visit around then (I live in Orillia) and I have a guitar I'd enjoy showing you too. PM me, okay? JennieG - If you get to see even half of the stuff in Toronto that people are telling you about here on this thread, you'll see a lot of stuff I've never seen in my life....and I was born in Toronto. Ain't that typical? ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: JennieG Date: 16 Sep 09 - 07:56 PM Mick, what a bummer - we'll be in Tronna in October, 6th to 27th, so we'll be too late to catch up (or you will be too early?) leftydee, I shall check out Kevin Quaid, he sounds interesting. I'm pretty sure we went to Kensington Markets last visit, it was an interesting place. We were following the two people we were with and they knew their way around - we had no idea where we were! 19 days to go. Cheers JennieG |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: JennieG Date: 04 Oct 09 - 07:33 AM Getting closer now, only two more sleeps! We fly out on Tuesday morning Sydney time, arrive in Los Angeles before we leave Sydney, hang around for a few hours then fly to Tronna. We're due to arrive at 5.45pm Tuesday. Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: Eve Goldberg Date: 04 Oct 09 - 06:52 PM Hi Jennie, Check out the Flying Cloud Folk Club Schedule - Every Sunday night near Bathurst and Bloor: http://www.flyingcloudfolk.ca/ Eileen McGann has a CD release on October 16, and the other concerts look great as well. Hugh's Room has tons of great stuff while you are here. It's more expensive. But it's a very nice night out if you are prepared to splurge for a nice dinner and show: http://www.hughsroom.com As for other stuff to do, one of my favourite things is to just pick a neighbourhood and walk around - Kensington Market, Chinatown (we have three of them!), Little India, Greektown, Ossington and College, St. Clair West, High Park/Roncesvalle, The Beaches. Take your pick! (and that's just a small sampling...) Feel free to get in touch directly if you want more advice -- and if it works out it would be fun to meet up! Safe Travels! |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: JennieG Date: 04 Oct 09 - 07:58 PM For sure, Maeve, for sure......*grin* I have my ticket to the Creativ(no e) Festival, I reckon I may be able to find fabric there. And knitting yarn. And maybe other things too. Eve, the Flying Cloud sounds interesting, I think we have the night free of Eileen McGann's CD launch. I would be interested to hear Eileen, I know she used to perform with 'Trilogy' and another member of that group, Cathy Miller, is a friend of mine. The world is getting smaller. Cheers JennieG....who should be thinking about packing very soon...... |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: Little Hawk Date: 04 Oct 09 - 08:57 PM Eileen does good stuff. When is her CD launch? |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: Eve Goldberg Date: 04 Oct 09 - 09:38 PM Eileen's CD Launch is Friday, October 16th -- they're doing it special for her on a Friday. Unfortunately, I will be out of town that weekend. |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: Little Hawk Date: 14 Oct 09 - 12:16 PM I have tried to reach JennieG at the phone number she gave, but can't get through on that. Somebody tell her to check her PMs here if you know how to reach her, okay? |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: JennieG Date: 19 Oct 09 - 03:09 PM I only have internet access when we visit our son's place, and my phone isn't working as I was told it would be, I am really ticked off. And the souvenir I have of TO isn't one I wanted, last Thursday I fell on an uneven surface and broke my left arm. Bum bugger bitch. But we are still planning to go to Acoustic Harvest on Saturday night. Cheers eh Jennie G |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: maeve Date: 19 Oct 09 - 03:19 PM A broken arm calls for LOTS of quilting fabric and knitting yarn and cuddles, and chocolate, and... Feel better and enjoy your stay anyway, JennieG. maeve |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: JennieG Date: 19 Oct 09 - 03:30 PM I reckon too Maeve......but I can't sew with one arm in a cast and sling, or knit, or crochet.....our son's girlfriend was teaching me to spin, can't spin now either.....bummer....but chocolate and cuddles are good...... Cheers eh JennieG |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: maeve Date: 19 Oct 09 - 04:06 PM When your arm is out of the cast, when you've started therapy, then you will want the cloth and yarn, Jennie. My broken wrist needed just that kind of gentle work, and now I'm playing guitar and harp, and starting little quilts besides. Double up on cuddles, chocolate, and music for a while. maeve |

Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: JennieG Date: 24 Oct 09 - 01:37 PM Unfortunately we didn't get to Aileen's CD launch, it was the day after I fell and I was still feeling shaken up and fragile. But we are going along to Acoustic Harvest tonight. Not looking forward to the long flight home.....my arm will probably need to be reset, ouch. So no guitar playing for a while. Cheers eh Jennie |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: Eve Goldberg Date: 24 Oct 09 - 10:51 PM Jennie, Sorry to hear about your arm! What a bummer. And I'm sorry we haven't crossed paths -- I was away last weekend and we decided to have a low key night tonight, so no Acoustic Harvest. I hope you had a great time if you went. |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 25 Oct 09 - 12:20 AM a knitter/quilter with a BROKEN arm! egads, wot a bummer, anyway you are now entitled to post to That 'Oh Bugger' Moment thread keep shopping - you can easily post home fabric & other stuff you can't get here. Sometime after you & your shopping get home we can get our diaries together & I can admire all that lovely crafty stuff. And show you all the stuff I've been buying (including a child's sewing box, fully fitted out, c.1910-20) & making. I'm starting work on my first quilt today - don't rejoice, I'm not turning into a quiltmaker - it's a doll's wholecloth quilt! sandra |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: JennieG Date: 26 Oct 09 - 11:41 AM We had a lovely night at Acoustic Harvest, John Prince was great, everyone was so friendly, and I won a CD in their raffle - how good is that? Eve, I'm so sorry we didn't get to meet up but my broken arm has thrown many of our carefully made plans awry. Geez Sandra - there's hope for you yet! Cheers eh JennieG |

Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: GUEST,Charmion Date: 27 Oct 09 - 07:54 PM I thought you needed zircon-encrusted tweezers to harvest the lonely dental floss. Surely the great Frank Zappa could not be wrong about something so elemental? |
Subject: RE: BS: Going to Toronto (Ont) soon From: JennieG Date: 31 Oct 09 - 04:34 AM Dental floss is what some Aussies call those tiny little bits of women's underwear that are just bits of string and lace and air...... We have been enjoying our CDs, John Prince (bought) and Don Bray (won). The bone doctor here seems to think my arm is healing as it should, which is a great relief - the doctor in Canada thought it may need to be reset. But it has had extra Ozzie plaster added over the Tronno plaster so it now weighs a ton and I will be mightily relieved when it is a bare arm once more. Then I will be able to play guitar again. And sew. And knit..... Cheers eh JennieG |
