Subject: RE: When the Sober start Drinking! From: katlaughing Date: 20 Jul 99 - 09:04 PM Well, I've had alcohol for the first time in 6 or so years, and I must say the locked up shoulder muscle from being on the 'pewter too much, is feeling a trifle more relaxed. And, it's all your fault, Ricky-woo!**BG** RiB: in my experience, coming from a family which has a good share of alcoholics, I saw most of them associate only with themselves, very solitary drinking lot. I think, it's my theory only, this was because my grandmother was a member of the Temperance Union and very intolerant about the demon rum etc. I remember, as a very young child, I knew no one was allowed to drink around grandma and her grown children hid their drinking from her, even in their own homes! Maybe that is part of why I turned out to be so upfront about whatever I do, even with my own mother when she was alive. I admire anyone who can help people which such addictions. Hats off to you! katlaughing

Subject: RE: When the Sober start Drinking! From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 20 Jul 99 - 08:27 PM Rick, In the US, one third of the adults do not drink at all. Another third drink less than once a month. This third probably drinks only on special occasions. The rest are regular drinkers. It is not uncommon that people pick their social network from among the "third" to which they belong. It is not uncommon for any motivated behavior to be associated with certain places or activities. It is similar to Pavlov's dog experiments. I hope your remember the dogs, the food, the bell and the saliva, 'cause I don't care to do that much typing. So, are you normal? Well, of course not, who is? However, you're drinking behavior is not unusual. Roger in Baltimore (who makes his living treating addicts and alcoholics and who should know something about all of this) |
Subject: RE: When the Sober start Drinking! From: MAG (inactive) Date: 20 Jul 99 - 08:21 PM Have to second the fact about Germany. I come from a teetotaling family, and never tasted alcohol until I went to Germany on a study program. The township grew winegrapes commnally, and you just didn't say no. Plus, they mixed beer and wine. Every town has its own unique brewery. My first night I got soooo sick ... MA |
Subject: RE: When the Sober start Drinking! From: Night Owl Date: 20 Jul 99 - 06:09 PM Had a tough day today, a friend just called and invited me out for a beer...WHICH WAS sounding good in this heat...until I had to "just peek" at this thread before I left! Given that I also work with horses, I want to THANK you KatL. for the vivid graphics!!!! |
Subject: RE: When the Sober start Drinking! From: Bert Date: 20 Jul 99 - 05:46 PM Bill D, Germany is like that as well. On a very long drive, I went into a restaurant in Munich for lunch. The last thing I needed was a beer because we still had a very long way to go and I was tired. However, the waitress (who would have looked well in an opera by Wagner) wouldn't serve me anything else. She said "YOU ARE A MAN - YOU DRINK BEER" and plonked a large one in front of me. Bert. |
Subject: RE: When the Sober start Drinking! From: katlaughing Date: 20 Jul 99 - 05:40 PM All beer taste like what I imagine horse piss tastes like, just never acquired a taste for it, no matter how hot. When I was a bartender I drank frequently, many moons ago. Never forge\ot the time a cowboy sauntered up and asked for a "curs"; sure sounded like he wanted were mean dawgs to me, but what he really wanted was a Coors. It now takes so ittle to effect my hyper-sensitive system that I never, hardly ever, no never drink. Funny, though, just after I saw the title of this thread, I called Rog to ask him to bring me home an amaretto sour, so....what's this auto-suggestion yer practising, Rick? kat |
Subject: RE: When the Sober start Drinking! From: Bill D Date: 20 Jul 99 - 05:36 PM well, *big grin*...I almost never get out of this country...but I DO like the taste of many alcoholic drinks. Furtunately, I almost NEVER over-do..when I have had enough, it starts tasting bad...I can make a bottle of Tullamore Dew last for months...and two beers is enough for most evenings.... but, I DO have a story..I had occasion to sit around an airport with Martin Wyndham-Reed once..(he bought a little camp chair I make, and I had to deliver it to him in time for the last leg of his flight home)...in gratitude, he offered to buy me a beer, but refused one himself, explaining that he simply didn't drink......EXCEPT in Australia! ...He told me in a bemused way, that when he would be in some club or bar in Australia, there was just no way to avoid beer...they simply did not comprehend NOT having a beer..*grin*...so he developed the art of setting one in front of himself and nursing it all evening long! He said he could usually get away with it as long as he waved it about and sipped it now & then. I guess in certain cultures one has to adapt... |
Subject: RE: When the Sober start Drinking! From: SeanM Date: 20 Jul 99 - 05:33 PM Hmm... Mine's not the country, but the situation. For about 8-20 weekends a year I work at a big outdoor event, where camping facilities are provided... to be honest, I usually drink more in one weekend out there than I do for the rest of the year outside of this event. For me, it's the combination of friends, not having any chance of having to drive anywhere, and the fact that most of my friends believe in the drink exchange program (wherein the coke that you started with is kidnapped and exchanged into a rum and coke... or more accurately, a rum that's seen a coke a few hours ago). It's a personal choice, but we cut loose and enjoy ourselves. M |
Subject: When the Sober start Drinking! From: Rick Fielding Date: 20 Jul 99 - 04:47 PM This is something that I've thought about for years but never actually asked anyone about. (including my therapist/third baseman) I'm basically a non-drinker - just don't like the taste of hard likker, and wine never tasted better than grape juice to me. Sometimes I'll drink the occasional beer on a hot summer's day - but rarely more than 3 or 4 a year. Every time I go to England or Scotland I drink tons of beer (something called 70 shilling) and nobody believes that in my real life I'm THE teatotaler among my friends. I'm not losing sleep over this, but I wondered if anyone else's drinking habits were as related to the country they were in. P.S. I never drink when singing, 'cause I forget words like crazy. Rick |
