Animals Do the Funniest Shit!?

We still don't give a shit about animal suffering, yes as an ethical consumer I know that. But it fucking pisses me off to see programmes on mainstream telly where animals in distress and pain are routinely used as big-laugh fodder. You know - Oh HAHAHA there's a horse in so much pain from colitis, that it's rolling around mindlessly on the stable floor - wot a brilliant fucking laugh! Or - Oh look at that hysterical Parrot that's been stuck in a cage so long it's gone totally MAD and repetitavely jerks about while ripping all it's own feathers out! BRILLIANT!!! Err yeah, whatever. Honestly c'mom, haven't we finally got beyond such medieaval humour yet?

I've not seen any of this on telly, but I'll take your word for it, and I agree that it's sick. I thoroughly detest all cruelty to animals.

Soeur Corbeille... it is horrible, what people are doing is looking at animals as though they are people, and playing the same bullying game on them as they did on the village idiot.

But I also think that that view of animals as a reflection of humanity- a behaviour mirror- is one of the things that has stoked human self awareness- a vital step in the development of consciousness. Which is still developing, rapidly (see BNP threads for those left behind), so it's not surprising, if sad, that freak shows are still popular.

Maybe in the future these will be seen on a par with blood smeared child foxhunters, as something humanity grew out of.

P.S. Sorry I just really got annoyed by a 'funny' scene on telly ten mins ago with a kid chucking a big ball at a tiny kitten. It was very funny to the audience, because the kitten was so scared it ran away. Brilliant joke!

I know it;s a sad example, but it's actually a sad example of much worse stuff if you take even a quick look.
Hamsters doing funny torture tests, tiny kittens slowly beheaded in car doors,

I was annoyed today, because of the complete mindless complicity of mainstream media in animal cruelty..

I've never owned a TV and don't think I've watched any British TV programme all the way through for more than ten years (the last one I can remember was a documentary about a psycho in Pakistan who murdered 100 young boys and dissolved them in acid).

It doesn't seem like I've been missing anything.

There isn't a point. It's simple enough- don't harm things except in self- defence. So it's perferctly OK to swat flies that (through no fault of their own) spread diseases. It's perfectly OK to kill an animal that's causing serious economic damage- but check that it's not simply being driven to desperation by human greed (or want). But to torment ANY animal for fun is not just inhuman, it's anti- life, you are justifying your own destruction on the DAYWBDY principle. And it's OK to eat animals - if you have leather and wool, you have a surplus of males that you've got to kill anyway (in the wild they are simply driven out of the herd as pickings for predators). Of course, some people take this to its logical conclusion- good luck to them, but I generally don't envy their health. So care sensibly, try not to be too greedy, and look on life for what it is- your own cousins.

I am as outraged as you are to see suffering offered up for entertainment. I just sent off a bunch of emails complaining to American Broadcast Co. for allowing "America's [supposedly] Funniest Videos" to broadcast a film of a little boy (approx. 6 yrs old) who was sitting on the toilet. He was crying in pain in obvious distress. The audience laughed louder and louder as his cries became more and more desperate. The only compassion for this poor kid came from the family dog who sat right next to him with a concerned look on his face. Mom just kept the camera rolling. These people won a $10,000 prize and a chance to rebroadcast this abuse for a chance at a $100,000 prize. The poor kid was made to sit in the audience between his clueless parents as the show's host stuck a microphone in his face asking him how he felt about his family getting all that cash for a film of him on the toilet. Really!

If this woman had gone out into her neighborhood and rounded up strangers to come laugh at her sick kid while he cried on the toilet, she'd be up on child abuse charges. Yet, here she was with full cooperation of ABC and AFV showing the whole world.

I didn't care for the funniest cats clip that had people laughing as a poor little kitten tried to escape from a cactus garden. The camera just kept on rolling as this poor kittie kept getting hurt...

Sigh...

I don't watch much television. I do resort to using it as a distraction when I am too ill to leave the house and have no attention span for reading. I am horrified at what passes for entertainment - or news for that matter.

Think I'll tune up the guitar and sing a coupla bars of John Prine's "Spanish Pipe Dream" the chorus of which goes:

Blow up the TV
Throw away the paper
Move into the country
Build a little home
Plant a little garden
Eat a lot of peaches
And go find Jesus
all on your own....

I don't like "reality" shows that make people suffer for "entertainment" or the supposed "funny" videos where people or animals suffer or get hurt. I don't think "slapstick comedy" is funny nor practical jokes that embarrass and humiliate people. Unfortunately, people are pushing the boundaries of this more and more to sell so called entertainment. And, unfortunately, people do make money on this crap.

Crow Sister, I completely agree with you. I'm not agaist killinh animals for food - in the most humane way possible, but for entertainment it's sick. Harming animals for a cheap laugh is just appalling. I've spent quite a bit of time actively fighting (in some cases literally, I'm afraid)against fox hunting, dog fighting and badger baiting, which still exist in the area where I live.

On these video clip shows, we've also been appalled at how many people let their kids get hurt and then send in the clips. Why weren't they protecting them instead of filming them?

Sadly, the world is full of sick-os.

The children were harmed in making them lie to authorities. The boy was vomiting because of the stress on the tv talk shows.

The parents are charged with contributing to the delinquency of minors, among other things.

Just because they were not physically hurt does not mean they weren't harmed. I think that is obvious.
