There was a time when I might have gladly taken the ribbon from Rita Coolidge's hair. But I would most certainly have done ANYTHING Linda Ronstadt asked. M-m-m-m-m...and there was something about the way Merrilee Rush sang "Angel Of The Morning". But at this particular moment, Lucy Kaplanski could have me pretty cheaply. No particular reason that I can think of.

I used to love this voice and I have never heard any that compare. I even went out and bought a record of his speeches.

I forgot to mention Maria Muldaur who once offered, "Let's slip off to a sand dune, real soon and kick up a little dust." On an album of hers she sings a song about "If you touch my knee". I can't quite remember what she looks like. I have an image in my mind of her singing in a flowered sarong with a hibiscus in her hair. But anyway, her inflection gets me every time.

Annap, yes, I certainly do remember Everett Dirksen, and I have that same album ~~ ran across it the other day, and considered playing it, but haven't yet. He was possibly the last of the old time orators ~~ certainly in today's television age there is no one like him, but that is another story. I lived most of my life in Illinois, so was fortunate to hear him many times.

Paddy, your choice of Dolores Keane certainly suits me. I'll have to think a bit to see if I can top that one.

Somehow I think the opinions on this thread may reveal some gender preferences, but for male voices, I fell in love with Sean Connery when I was about 3. For women's voices, I really like Lauren Bacall. And for singers, the male voice of my current fancy is Vance Gilbert, the female voice, Emmylou Harris or Linda Rondstadt, though I like Alberta Hunter on Handyman too.

I'll have to ditto Maria Muldaur. When I first saw her perform she drove me nuts (it was with the Kweskin Jug Band). I've seen her a couple of times in the past few years. She just gets sexier (better) and sexier (better) all the time - and she's still singing "Don't you feel my leg".

Maura O'Connell is right up there, too.

On the male side, I'd have to say the bass singer for the Fairfield Four (gospel quartet). He's another one who could just read the phone book and send electrodes through the system.

As far as singers go, the other day when I listened to the Irish Tenor cd I was struck by the sexiness of John McDermott's voice. (Though it amazes me how he can get such wonderful sound out without hardly opening his mouth...)

Then there is a friend of mine who I think has a very sexy voice, though you'll all have to take my word for it.

Right now, male: the guy with the group in the top 40's who sings "Lullaby" He kinda speaks part of it about a young girl crowing up in Hollywood and then he sings her a Lullaby "Everything gonna be alright, rockabye, rockabye" Don't knwo the name of the group or the song, but he has got one very sexy voice.

Marlene Dietrich, definitely and I really like Ferron's voice, too.

My girlfriend asked me to call her boyfriend, whom I had never met, on his birthday and sing the sexiest rendition of Happy Birthday I could. He didn't know who I was until later, but he wanted to meet me. We joked about it for several years after.:-)

For my tuppence worth... Female speaking voice has to be Mary-Jane Tomasi (radio announcer her in Auckland) definitely a saucy chuckle behind it!! Female singer for me is Cleo Laine...she excited me as a youngster many years ago...heard her live last week and it's still there!!

MAG-- A few years ago a group callled the "Hot Club of San Francisco" released a CD. It is Django/Grapelli inspired swing. There are a few guest vocalists (my vote, Maria Muldaur included) and one of them is Barbara Dane, sounding good as ever. Very Bluesy. I hadn't heard of her doing anything for years, but I believe she resides somewhere in Northern CA. Anybody know anything more?

Geeze freda, now you really are digging deep into the memory banks with Gerry Humphreys! I was a big fan of The Loved Ones back in the days.... I bought "The Loved One" and "Everlovin' Man" and I can still remember exactly what they sounded like - I might even still have the singles somewhere. I agree with you about his voice - amazing!

Now this is going to seem very strange.

I like all types of music from Folk, Blues, R&B, Rock, Punk, Trad jazz, Country, all the stuff that my 13 year old daughter likes, etc etc.

But there are two songs that have stuck in my mind all through my life and bring goose pimples to me whenever I hear them. What are they.
Not sure if they are sexy but certainly stunning.

I find it amazing that not a single woman has mentioned either Nat "KIng" Cole or Johnny Mathis, both of whom used to leave a lot of girls stuck to their seats in my youth.

Among female singers, I have to come down in the Julie London camp. I just wish I could shake the image of her falling-down drunk the one time I got to see her in person.

I was a little surprised at Rick Fielding's mention in 1999 of Barbara Dane. I've got one of her albums that I don't think I ever played more than twice; I'll have to reassess it.

Hmmm, Mudlark, I think Julie London was married to Jack Webb, not Jack London. Jack London, the author, was of another era. Jack Webb, star of the old series, Dragnet, was a big star back then when Julie London came into prominence. But her voice is not bad.

Just had to join in the fun on a boring afternoon here at work...

I can't believe nobody has yet put in a vote for Nick Cave. His singing voice has such an incredibly intimate quality, it always makes me feel as if he really is singing just for me. Added to that deep growly rasp he's got going on in there, it always makes me think of how a man sounds the morning after the night before. Yummy.

I will add a big "me, too!" for Alan Rickman's speaking voice. That man could talk me right into a... very cold shower.

As for female singers, you all don't know what you're missing if you haven't heard Belle du Berry. Playful, intimate, expressive, natural, utterly gorgeous voice. She sings for an absolutely fantastic Parisian swing/lounge band called Paris Combo. When I first bought a CD of theirs, my metalhead husband kept it in the player in his car for three months! Not that I could blame him.

Well, there's Patrick Stewart, and Liam Neeson, then there's George Cluny, I love that nice, husky rasp.
The little sparrow, Edith Piaf, was one of the sexiest female vocalists who ever breathed. "Milor" is a very sexy song, without mentioning sex.
Now, I went singing with a guy who does madrigals at Ren fairs. He sang love songs like he meant them, and his voice was like honey pouring oh so sloooooooooowly out of the jar. But I don't remember his name.

I have not read ALL the posts in this thread, but the first thing that
comes to mind for me is the d.j. in Omaha on KOIL radio who signed off at night after playing a sweet soft beatles song--and he whipered:
"Night, luvvy" then all went silent...oooh....melted my teenage heart..
it had been all down hill since then. i think the song was "All My Love"
or at least that is one of the lines that goes thru my head when i try to recall what song he played...i mainly remember the whisper part!!

As for women... Dunno. I have a problem with female voices. I normally don't like (bands with) female singers at all. Oh, hang on - maybe Annie Lennox.

ahhh the ear of the beholder.

Frankly, my husband has NO IDEA the power he has in his Long Island baritone. the man can talk me into ANYTHING. hell -- he can send thrills of frisson through me with the tiniest amount of playful heat behind whatever he's saying. AUGH!!!
Thank goodness he'll never read that. lol.

I have a real weakness for voices. I usually go for tenors: ohhhh.
