Subject: BS: If Great Britain was to swallow irration From: GUEST,Jim Martin Date: 11 Dec 09 - 07:52 AM I filched these words from another thread ("Ireland and the punt") as I thought they could be the makings of a new thread? The full title (as I couldn't get it all in) should be - "If Great Britain was to swallow irrational pride"

Subject: RE: BS: If Great Britain was to swallow irration From: GUEST,Steamin' Willie Date: 11 Dec 09 - 08:23 AM As the author of the words... My point was that the manufacturing industry, what is left of it, were lobbying through the CBI and other means to say that if we are serious about being a trading nation, if we are built on export of goods rather than services, then joining the Euro was a no brainer. The tabloids likened it to having lost the second world war rather than winning it. Hence, Sterling is wandering all over the place, (ironically making it easier to export!) and blaming Johnny Foreigner is a national sport............ again. Pragmatism in business seems to rank lower than political capital in being nationalistic. Hence irrational pride. Just out of interest, I am not being pro European State here. I don't think the political coming together is a good idea and the Treaty of Lisbon was a step too far. However, the original common market of sovereign nations being able to trade goods easier is a concept most Eurosceptics are comfortable with. Until you tell them a common currency is an excellent tool to achieve it. The the irrational pride comes out in force. Just a throwaway comment at the time, but happy to debate it! |
Subject: RE: BS: If Great Britain was to swallow irration From: John MacKenzie Date: 11 Dec 09 - 08:29 AM I said before, and I will say again, a dual currency would have been more acceptible to most people. e g If one pound was worth one Euro, and it has nearly come to that. Then if it had £1 stamped on one side, and €1 on the other, then it might just work. With similar arrangements for DSM's francs, Drachma etc, in the relevant countries. We would have a readily transferrable currency then, without losing the national affection for ones own currency. |

Subject: RE: If Great Britain was to swallow irrational pride From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 11 Dec 09 - 01:11 PM I've always that the right thing to do would have been to declare the the English term for the Euro would "the Quid". Ideally get everyone else to accept the term too - after all it's a good old Latin word, and it sounds a lot better than "Euro". Now were pretty well at parity - one euro is 90p, one pound is 1.1 euro - all they need do is fix the currencies together. We could still talk about "pounds", and even keep the old coinage and notes. |
Subject: RE: If Great Britain was to swallow irrational pride From: Rasener Date: 11 Dec 09 - 01:23 PM Most of my wifes income is in Euro's whilst working in the UK. Wish we did use Euro's, then we wouldn't have those greedy W****** B****** Bankers taking huge conversion costs from my wifes income to fatten their greedy bonus fatbag purses. |
