Subject: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Rapparee Date: 18 Dec 09 - 09:14 AM Upon Hearing the Prediction of Snow for the Washington, DC, Area, Written by One Who Has Lived There for a Quarter-Century (by Fred King, 2007) Bread and milk and toilet paper! Snowshoes, hats, and skis and poles! Snow is coming! Snow is coming! Spread the salt and stir the coals. Snowplows sit with blinkers blinking, Students line up in the hall, Radios announce the panic As the flakes begin to fall. Metro's open underground, Outdoor stations will be closed. Thousands trapped on escalators! Things are worse than we supposed. Drivers slide along the Beltway From the dusk until the morn, Must get somewhere in a hurry, Brakes don't work, so use the horn. Bread and milk and toilet paper! A phrase to chill you to the core. Snow is coming! Snow is coming! At least an inch! and maybe more! |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Leadfingers Date: 18 Dec 09 - 09:25 AM I hope DC wil not over react to a bit of snow the way London usually does ! |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: jeffp Date: 18 Dec 09 - 09:32 AM Rap, that's too true to be funny! I like it though. Leadfingers: overreact? Our forecasts snarl traffic. They're predicting 4-8 inches and I just pray it doesn't start until I get home from work. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Mrrzy Date: 18 Dec 09 - 09:41 AM Yeah, and they can't drive in it for s**t. Not that I didn't slide into that pedestrian last winter, but hey, UVa students need to be brought down a peg anyway, right? I've heard 1-3, 2-4, and 3-5 inches, all within the same time frame from different radio stations and meteorologists. But there will be a lot of ice mixed in, and nobody can predict Charlottesville weather anyway, we're in a pocket that all the isobars somehow miss... I'm guessing at least 2 by bedtime tonight and maybe another 2 overnight. And it's the kids' last day of exams and the end of the school year and a Friday and *I*'m certainly not staying in drinking hot chocolate! I will turn my car to face downhill and leave it in the driveway, though, and go out in my wonderful forest green cloak of Irish wool to swirl through the falling snow. If there is any. I can hardly wait. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: fretless Date: 18 Dec 09 - 10:59 AM Wonderful, Rapaire. Thanks. Over reacting to snow is a way of life in the U.S. capital, and this storm actually promises to have some moxie. 6"-12" is the latest prediction from the government sources. The fact that is falls on a Saturday will be taken as a terrible waste of effort by the region's school children, who are used to getting days off with only a light dusting. And the fact that it falls on the weekend before Christmas is likely to be devastating to local merchants. |

Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Bill D Date: 18 Dec 09 - 01:33 PM ooops! Sorry...it DOES say heavy snow for tomorrow afternoon! Snow starting at midnight, heavy right during the scheduled event, then continuing in diminishing amounts until almost Sunday noon. We'll do our best, Rap.. you'll probably be fine on Tuesday...as those of us who went to the Nowell concert dig our way out of the parking lot. (Wave at us! It IS near downtown Silver Spring_) |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Joe Offer Date: 18 Dec 09 - 02:05 PM I was in DC during a snowstorm in March of 1999, I think. It was no more than three inches, but it shut down almost all traffic. Workers went home three hours early, and downtown Washington was quiet and peaceful. I couldn't get any work done, so I walked and walked through the snow, and it was wonderful. After it got dark, I took the Metro almost to the door of my hotel. Didn't have to worry about traffic at all. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: CarolC Date: 18 Dec 09 - 02:10 PM My son will be driving in to the DC area from Colorado on Sunday. I'm not happy about this. I'm particularly worried about his drive through western PA. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Bill D Date: 18 Dec 09 - 02:38 PM It looks dicey on Sunday, Carol Weather Channel He'll need to stay tuned and stay on major roads to see what's been cleared...and DO NOT go thru W. Va. If he's from Colorado,I assume he can deal with snow ok. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: artbrooks Date: 18 Dec 09 - 02:53 PM The stretch of PA Turnpike from the Ohio line to about State College really sucks - it is narrow, curvy and always under repair. The forecast for Pittsburgh is light snow. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: katlaughing Date: 18 Dec 09 - 03:06 PM Well, I am surprised nobody has said it is Obama's fault...probably brought it with him from Chicago!:-) Ya'll be careful out there! |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: GUEST,beardedbruce Date: 18 Dec 09 - 03:34 PM Let me state for the record that I do not think that Obama is responsible for the coming snowstorm. Now Congress has produced enough hot air recently to cause a low pressure system... |

Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Bobert Date: 18 Dec 09 - 05:31 PM Well, having grown up 12 miles south of DC I think it's great that DC is going to get hammered... Unfortunatly, I am now living 112 miles south of DC and they are calling fir me to get ahmmered, as well... Oh well... The Kabuta is filled with diesel... The cars are in the barn... I got beeer and the P-Vine... Christmas shopping is done... Generator is on the front porch and I got chicken in the barn so... ...if we're gonna get hammered then bring the crap on... BTW, it started here at 1700 ft. elevation about an hour ago... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Hrothgar Date: 18 Dec 09 - 07:56 PM I think there was snow here about 18,000 years ago. Currently about 34 Celsius, humidity 90% |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Nancy King Date: 18 Dec 09 - 08:03 PM Looks like this is gonna be the first self-respecting snowstorm in the DC area for a LONG time. I'd welcome it gladly, if it weren't for the Nowell Sing We Clear concert... |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Ebbie Date: 18 Dec 09 - 09:41 PM "Copenhagen is having a rare snowfall too." At its latitude Copenhagen doesn't regularly get snow? That is surprising. ********** I was going to call family in North Carolina tonight because of their anticipated snow but just today when I opened the couple of letters I got from them today I discovered they're not even home! They've gone to Canada to my nephew's house - where there is plenty of snow. |

Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Bill D Date: 18 Dec 09 - 10:35 PM It IS snowing in DC as of 9:30 or so.... half an inch already. I have filled the bird feeders and covered the car with a plastic sheet and gone to Safeway with the rest of the hoard of locusts. (I'll bet most of you didn't know that locusts favor eggs and bananas! There were NONE in the store. No milk, either, but we had that.) I used to go out several times at night and shovel in order to reduce the load the next day.... but I think I am feeling my age. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Sawzaw Date: 18 Dec 09 - 10:50 PM I had to hunt down a cart in the parking lot at the Superfresh. Then after I got the food, the self checkout counters were all down and a tech was sweating bullets trying to get them working. Three checkout lines were open, all with candy and people were spending an inordinate amount of time in line. Their kids were impatient, grabbing the candy and screaming when it was taken away. The big scramble for milk, bread and toilet paper happens every time snow is coming. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: DougR Date: 19 Dec 09 - 12:11 AM It will be interesting to see how close the horrendous reports of deadly snowfall by the expert weather prognosticators will come to actual snowfall in our nation's capitol. I lived in the DC area for a couple of years and we had a (for then) record snow fall during December and we had a ball. If there is enough snow to keep the Senators at home and away from the Capital, I say, hooray! DougR |

Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 19 Dec 09 - 08:10 AM Stay safe, all of you! We're used to it up here in northern New England- in our village, the highest paid employee is the road agent, who works round the clock in bad weather. We're getting the fringe of your blast, but we'll be thinking of you as you bear the brunt of it. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Maryrrf Date: 19 Dec 09 - 08:58 AM It snowed all night in Richmond, and now it's sleeting and will turn to snow later on. Snowy morning! |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Bobert Date: 19 Dec 09 - 09:58 AM Woke up to 13 inches here on the Blue Ridge Mountain and it's now up to 15 inches and snowing very hard... I'm going to finish my 2nd cup of coffee and see how far I can get with the shovel toward the drive way and then just fight my way back to the tractor barn and see how Mr. Kutota likes pushing/plowin' this much snow... Looks as if I'll have to use the front bucket and scoop it bucket at a time and make several bigass piles on out to the road... Speaking of Richmond, I have many memories of snows in Richmond... I remember one in particular when I was living off River Road and we got about 9 inches and walked in it over the Lee Bridge, thru Oregon Hill to the fan with my white German Sheppard, Coe... Great times... Yo, Doug... Is it snowing there in Pheonix??? B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: SINSULL Date: 19 Dec 09 - 10:04 AM No snow in Maine. Cold and sunny with some flakes tomorrow but it does not appear to be a "plowable event". I love that phrase. Mary Your puppy isn't sure if that is fun or not. Maybe a little water proof lined coat and hat for her? SINS, for once gloating with Amos. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Nancy King Date: 19 Dec 09 - 10:07 AM Woo hoo! The National Weather service has upgraded the DC metro area to a BLIZZARD warning! I guess that means it's gonna be windy in addition to all the snow. Nowell Sing We Clear has been cancelled. Clearly the right move, but... :( |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: SINSULL Date: 19 Dec 09 - 10:20 AM Oh that's too bad. Severn will be disappointed. Bundle up warm guys and make sure you have an emergency kit in your car - water, a blanket, a candle (yeah it will keep you from freezing), a flashlight, some energy bars. Don't forget a shovel and some salt. Better still, stay home and enjoy the scenery. Mary |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: GUEST,Carly Date: 19 Dec 09 - 11:00 AM The Nowell Sing me Clear concert, which I have looked forward to seeing for months, has been cancelled and I am home with a sick husband (some sort of flu) and a dying cat (our beloved Mr. Steed is in the final stages of lymphoma.) Not my favorite day ever, I'm afraid. Still, there is plenty of food and heat, and I did NOT have to go out yesterday for bread and milk. I know that is breaking Washington tradition, but I keep my pantry supplied, particularly in winter, and it has finally paid off! Our son is safely home from college for the holidays, I have the time to check in with my mudcat friends, and it surely is beautful outside: a steady, fine-textured fall that has turned all the trees to lace. It is really not such a bad day..... Carly |

Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: GUEST,John from Elsie`s Band Date: 19 Dec 09 - 11:11 AM Rapaire, That is one of the best I`ve read for ages. I thought we in Britain were the only ones who panicked when the first snow flake fell but I`m glad to be in good company. Having said that, a couple of years ago our train operators were taken to task for using the term "wrong type of snow" when a number of locomotives failed but engineering did show that an unusual size of snowflake did foul up the filters and did for the motors. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Sawzaw Date: 19 Dec 09 - 11:43 AM I am smack dab in the middle of an area with a blizzard warning. 20 to 30" is the current prediction. |

I cannot count the number of times someone would wander out in a blizzard in WY and die. BillD, impressive pix, thanks for posting them. Carly, sorry about your {{{{kitty}}}} and I hope your husband feels better, soon. |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Bill D Date: 19 Dec 09 - 12:55 PM This isn't quite a blizzard,...the snow is only at about 45° and one can see for a block or so. It's just more snow than we have seen here in several years. Unfortunately, the current forecast is for it to remain 'heavy' until 9 PM...and then just 'snow'... We had over 20" in about 1979, and this could approach that if it keeps going. I'll add to the album later... |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Bobert Date: 19 Dec 09 - 01:10 PM 20 inches here on the Blue Ridge right now and still snowing... When it gets that deep there is no plowin' until the bulk is removed bucket at a time and moved... I've got one area where I can stash it and the pile is about 8 feet tall and and 40 feet wide and 42 feet deep right now and hopefully will hold all the excess... I've cleared about 400 feet of driveway in 3 hours so far and have about another 1000 feet to go... But, nevermind the aggrivation 'cause it is one heck of a pretty sight... I can't wait for it to clear up so we can see what the mountain looks like... Think I'll take a nap and go back at it... Ya'll stay warm and dry if ya' can... B~ BTW, the cats are all very pissed off and think that the P-Vine and I have 'cuased this storm just to inconvenience them... Cat thinkin'... |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Folkiedave Date: 19 Dec 09 - 01:21 PM Stay safe and warm folks. I was over there at this precise time three years ago, all prepared for cold weather. It was about 60F (say 17C) when we arrived and stayed reasonably warm throughout our stay!! Problem was we were geared up for much colder weather so we had a lot of spare clothes!! |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Bill D Date: 19 Dec 09 - 03:07 PM more pics It has snowed another 7-8 inches since the first 7 pics. I guess we have about 16"-17" by now... close to the deepest we have ever had in 26 years at this place... I dug a path to the street to greet my son....whose boss demanded his employees come in this morning, then wouldn't let them close the store until 12:30, and the local buses quit running at 1! Three employees are stranded and hoping that a friend with 4-wheel drive is coming for them. (Main streets are 'passable' if one can get to them,) |
Subject: RE: BS: It's Gonna SNOW In DC!!! From: Alice Date: 19 Dec 09 - 03:49 PM Yup, that's a lot of snow all right, Bill. I hope it melts for you soon. We have that much and it will stay around until at least April. |
