It's just after 9:15pm (2115hrs) here in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand and we're about to go out and bring in the new year.
In just under 3 hours, think of us here, outside in summer temperatures, sitting around a burning dinghy sized metal boat, singing Geordie songs and then playing Auld lang syne on my smallpipes while the rest of the crowd join hands and sing.
I'm also hoping to sing the Peace Round as well, with Kytrad in my thoughts.

Wish I'd had a chance to learn Jean's Peace round but our PC died a week or so ago and I've only limited access. We'll be going over to South Wales (old, not new) later today to party with a whole load of Folkies.

Sydney heading to midnight - I'm listening to the NYE radio program so I'll know when it's midnight.

As I mentioned in the preliminary thread, living in Kings Cross - Sydney's entertainment capital - I normally stay at home cos it's too bloody hard to get back home.

So tonight as per normal I went for my evening walk down the road (thru the Cross) & round the corner (into Potts Point) & towards the park that overlooks the Harbour & the Bridge. It's normally pretty empty apart from a few walkers & dog owners & I often take pics of the city skyline & sunset.

Today the Park was locked until 6pm when the waiting crowds could enter - folks were sitting on picnic blankets on the street, some folks had staked out spots on the footpath (sidewalk to some folks) maybe cos the park was alcohol free!

I was wandering past when an acquaintance said hello & I spent the next few hours chatting with her in her nearby apartment then we viewed the 9pm fireworks & went our separate ways.

She was planning to wander out & see the midnight fireworks so I assume she'll be back in that very crowded street now.

We sang the Peace round as well as Auld Lang Syne, then we had a feast that included Pease Puddin' and Stotty Cake - traditional Northumbrian fare.

Sum Yung Sun and I went out to supper at our favorite local restaurant - the Saratoga Grill - shared their New Year's eve special - crab dip appetizer, a wonderful salad with pears, walnuts, mixed greens and feta, filet, lobster, chilled asparagus in a dijon sauce, and their wonderful homemade scones. He has been with his Dad for almost two weeks and I am thrilled to have him back with me.

Home now, messing around and chatting about the assorted music he is playing - Will be making some calls a bit a later. Wish I had some more phone numbers!

Sort of related - did anyone watch to "Honors" program broadcast from the Lincoln Center Tuesday night?

Was great in London ... I stood on top of the hill beside where I live and had a view of the whole city.

he idea was to seee the fireworks over the thames, but we got a lot more than that as on the stroke of midnight fireworks sprouted like spring flowers over the whole city from peoples back gardens and partiies, while the main display rumbled and roared around the London eye which became a Giant catherine wheel.

Hundreds of people had brought paper lanterns which filled up with hot air and floated up into the sky, adding to the spectacle beautifully.

2009 was a great year for me, lets hope that 2010 can compare.

LOL......Janie, I tried to call you back but went straight to VM twice so I figured maybe your battery croaked....mine was down to half when you called......Anyway, I'll give you a call one of these days very soon because we barely got started. Careful driving home.

And yeah, Sins thought I was Mick at first but that can happen. When I hear my recorded voice I know that Mick and I really are brothers.........but he sings a helluva' lot better.


I think some folks had a pretty good time on this and I know I'm enjoying it! We'll let it run for the 72 in hopes some other folks drop back by and tell us where they were..........Sinsull's guests damn near all went home! Talk about your bad hostess............

When I started checking in here in '98 I had no idea how a damned website would change my life. Happy New Year's Day! It was great to talk with Kat in the middle of the contra dance, and when I walked back into the dance hall the caller asked me to lead a song! Of course I chose Jean Ritchie's Peace Round (later we did Auld Lang Syne). I wish I knew more Mudcatter's phone #s, but there was a voicemail on my phone from Micca as well. I feel so connected with this wonderful community.

I will always remember this one as special bit of fun because as the ball dropped I was on the phone with Janie. We were cut off not long after that and I understand from the news that the traffic at that time was very heavy.......Karen had to try three times to get a text though.

Well I hope you all woke up. That is I hope you all woke up sprightly and ready to go for the first day of 2010.

It's Hopin' John (or for us vegetarians, Hopless John) and greens today for good luck. I can't stand collards, but we'll have which kale is nearly as frugal and thus is also good luck. Here in the south the peas represent coins and the greens folding money.

We'll make some music this evening and tomorrow to start the year of right here on the mountain.

I Started A Joke: An Interpretive Study

Mary Lee Foote analyzed the Robin Gibb song "I Started A Joke" some time ago, and offered to share it with some of her fellow Bee Gees fans. Because it was rather long she was reluctant to post it on any mailing list. I thought it was most interesting and offered to post it on her behalf on my website. Mary Lee and I hope you enjoy it.

Though this song is considered old in musical reference, it still springs new to the masses who perpetually discover and rediscover the talents of the Bee Gees. Even those of us who have been fans for the span of a generation find new meaning in old lyrics as life carries us into dimensions we have never before explored.

Often seen as a spiritual commentary on Robin's part, he has never claimed that to be the basis of the piece, as such. Experience draws us all in a diversity of directions, often all at once, and inspiration is the trickle-down of that overload.

I am not one to climb into the great minds of our times and autopsy their brainchild of work but I have an awareness of something woven into the lyric here that I've never before seen discussed. The piece encompasses only eight lines of poetic statement, clean and straight-forward in appearance and delivery, yet steeped in the mystery of a thousand ages. This song leaves naked, parts of the soul we tend to keep covered, even from our own deeper selves.

We see in it, our own personal sins of omission that do not look so pretty in black and white and are even more haunting when presented in a package of understated music and single-voiced verse. Although I do see where the spiritual intonation peers through the lyric at us, I see here, too, the personal commentary of an inner moral dilemma being posed by the subject and the step by step process by which he rationalizes his justification for not following his inner personal voice. This person wants desperately to shed his etiquetted skin and stand on the purity of truth rather than cower in civilized silence in the face of injustice.

He theorizes the consequences of such an action on his part. He knows his statement will upset the world that, up to this point, was living comfortably in its own shallow self-deception. Because his view is so different from everyone else, he knows this will upset the sedate tranquility of those around him. In defensive retaliation, rather than re-examining, reforming, and admitting to the error of their ways, society would turn its collective, disdainful back on his statement and proclaim the fundamental truth he has exposed to be merely the folly of a prankster.

He goes on to see that he will not be taken seriously and cries in the frustration of being the only one who has had this vision of truth and reality. He feels alone and small in the cosmos. At this, he knows the world will take great delight in his outward appearance of weakness and defeat and in their arrogance he knows they will unite in crushing declamation and mercilessly taunt him wherever he goes, all the days of his life.

He looks up, seeking heavenly approval and resolve of the issue. He attempts to clear his eyes searching for a sign of the miraculous awakening of those around him. Just as he begins to dry his eyes in the faith that, because of his sincerity of heart, there will surely now be change, he tumbles out of his dream-state into reality. He falls hard from grace back into the moment.

The enormity of the entire situation crashes over him like a tidal wave as he sees the ramifications of what he has started by his simple statement of truth. He is paralyzed in thought and can no longer make sense of his own words as they drown in the whirlpool of confusion between human emotion and soulful truth. He eventually dies a broken man because he knows the truth but never pursued it to the fullest of its intent due to his lack of courage in his own personal convictions. He saw himself as wholly inadequate to challenge what he did not approve of in this world so he never stood up for what he believed in.

After his death, civilization perpetuates itself in its blithe ignorance, unscathed by the voice of truth he held within. He is gone, and with him, the potential threat he posed to a thinly-skinned euphoric society.

In the end, he sees that he had indeed been right and that society was truly wrong. He knows then, all too late, that he would have made a difference if only he had not given in to his own imagined fears.

He wasted a lifetime repressing himself and the truth he had once envisioned. He had become his own worst enemy. He had shackled his own soul down - not the society that he had tried to hold accountable for his lack of action. He ultimately became the very thing he once morally raged against - a silent, self-deceiving member of a pretentious urbane society.

Yes, the joke WAS on him.

Dernit, I missed this while we were on the road visiting king for the holidays. But we spent New Years Eve getting to know the newest great nephew, who is a hoot at 6 months. Laughs his little butt off and claps his hands at just about anything. Absolutely looks like a clone of his dad.
